Tommy is in a great form here, displaying his unique lyrical approach to bebop, aided greatly by Mraz - simply the best bassist for Flanagan and the ever reliable Lewis Nash. This is arguably the best working trio Flanagan ever had.

This is one of my favorite Charlie Parker tunes. Especially one of the takes has a great little solo by Bird's go to pianist Duke Jordan. I have to think that Flanagan is riffing off of that solo, not so much literally quoting it, but the feeling of subtle swing, graceful yet all in. Just beautiful.

So many of Birds tunes were great : to me this one is untouchable in its melodic creativity and swing. Ty for the uploading. Tommy is so wonderful.

That’s a good way to play two songs together, first the original and then the contrafact of that song.

Hank Jones once said that his clean articulation was inspired by Billy Kyle, the under-recorded pianist with John Kirby and the Louis Armstrong All-Star bands. -paul hoffman
