I don't know why you could not take it on the sea, the engine has it's own "sealed" cooling system but the exhaust does not. I would flush everytime you take it out in salt water. Just connect a garden hose within 20 seconds of starting & turn water off first then engine within 20 seconds. On a 20 gallon tank your range will greatly depend on how fast you are cruising. 20-25mph is not bad, once you speed up it seems to go thru the fuel rather quickly & mine is not even super-charged
