2017 Scarab jet boat almost sinks to the bottom!

Ran into these folks at Pickwick Lake on Memorial Weekend who didnt seem to be having the best luck. Luckily they got all of the water pumped out of the boat and were able to be towed home.

this is a Scarab 165 which is the same design as the Seadoo Sporster/Speedster line since 94' which means these things can never fully "sink". I would reckon its drain plugs, but being that the total gross weight is limited to 650, that big blonde cow there sitting on the bow could be why this capsized :)

I only saw one other person mention that the reason it didnt sink is ITS ALREADY AS SUNK AS ITLL GET..."Monohull boats under 20 feet in length and rated for more than two horsepower must comply with the more sophisticated flotation system called Level Flotation. The Level Flotation system requires that the swamped boat, loaded with certain weights representing weight capacity, part of persons capacity and some equipment, must float in an approximately level position and not heel past a certain angle, even when part of the passengers’ weight is on one side of the passenger carrying area. Section 5.0 covers the requirements and tests to perform."

Oh, brings back memories of being a new boat owner (old janky boat though) with all my family on board, pulling away from the dock and getting out about a minute, and the boat feels like it is taking on water - yep, forgot to put in the plug ... did it once and never again. Lucky the trailer was still there, and got it out of the water quick and let it drain, learned my lesson ... I feel like most everyone's done it once.

Back in the 90s friend of mine was trying to sell me his boat. We put in at Willow Beach. Couple of minutes in I noticed water in the floor. Slap him, point down and he sees the water. Pulled to shore, I knew I put drain plug in told him to install engine plugs. After I had jumped in the 50* water. He looks in helm cup holder. There are the engine plugs.

That's a lot of water...and you'll be lucky if that jet engine even works again. Best thing about these boats is that the won't ever sink. The boat haul is filled with foam. I have the same boat.

This reminds me of a plumbers story: The lady was frantically bailing the shower with a dust pan and putting it into the toilet. The clog in the sewer was down stream. Water seeks its own level. All the water she dumped into the toilet traveled through the pipes back to the shower. These guys didn't know to un-swamp the stern until they were told to do so by someone in the other boat. Then they pulled the bow further up the shore which lowers the stern. Apparently, they finally figured it out before the bilge pump died. These folks appear to follow my ex-neighbor's rule: If my daddy didn't show me how, it isn't worth knowing, except for sex.

I just now saw this video and I just bought one of these just 2 days ago ! I see a big design problem now, the engine room hatch is too low at the rear of the boat and there is no way it's going to seal water tight. It looks as if it won't take much for that hatch to go under water to let the water in. I'll be sure to never take a chance of overloading the boat. I'll limit the passengers to 3 . Ugh !
