Living in Alaska, the 4Runner has proven itself to be a beast! With massive potholes in the roads, snow/ice, off-road camping trails, it's nice to have a vehicle that is unfazed. Yet, civil enough to use as a daily commuter to work.

Love my 2016. It’s been used and abused in every weather condition so far from deep snow to going over telephone poles on the streets from hurricanes/tornadoes. This vehicle can go over all kinds of debris from just a stock height being a proper SUV. Give it proper tires and it’s unstoppable.

There is nothing more indomitable then a Toyota 4 Runner. My '99 has over 350,000 Km on the odometer. It's driven as far as the moon is away from Earth. It's shrugged off several minor accidents with barely a scratch to my family. It has the same bloodline as the indestructible Hi-Lux. Not even death itself could stop it, and while that may be completely biased, and it has quite a couple of replacement parts in it and on it. It drove as far as the moon. Could modern cars go that far and still shrug off the ravages of time? I can't say, but it sure as hell made its case.

The 2015 4Runner Trail I'm buying will be our 3rd 4Runner. My truck is a '04 Tacoma V6 TRD X-cab, successor to my '93 DX bought almost new. Been driving Toyotas since I was 17..that's 35 years of punishment the vehicles have survived, and owner satisfaction. Will be selling my Lexus ISF for a RCF soon. I here the '16 Tacoma is all new as well. Too bad other makers don't build vehicles this durable, and stand behind them like Toyota does. Got a '16 Trail Premium a few months ago and love it so far. Coming from a turbocharged Subaru, I expected handling to be awful but that hasn't been the case at all. Even with AT tires, the 4Runner is not too floaty at highway speeds and handles curves fairly well. Sure there's a bit of body roll, but it's really not that bad. You get used to it eventually. I've also been very impressed with how relatively quiet the cabin is at high way speeds. Not too shabby for a truck with 9.6" of ground clearance and big tires. Power is adequate most of the time -- however, to wake up the engine you'll need to literally floor it with the pedal actually touching the floor. Fuel economy isn't very good as others have noted. I get 16mpg most of the time and have never gotten more than 19.5mpg with combined city/highway driving (however, that's with BFG KO2 tires, not OEM tires). Overall the whole truck feels very solid and confidence inspiring. I think if I ever have to replace it again, it'll be another 4Runner regardless of gas prices.

A lot of people diss the style of the 4Runner, but I actually love it (I'm 29, single male, just arriving back home from traveling for 7 years, living in CO). I'm always wondering about the folks that dont like it....well then what style do you like? Or maybe most people are married to a more old school grille? Or that it's too bulky and want something more like the Mazda CX-5 / crossover type? It seems they hound Toyota for not making more aggressive styling, then when Toyota does, say it's ugly. I commend Toyota for sticking to an incredible vehicle and couldn't be happier with my purchase. I see about 19.5 average on my 4x4 2014 SR5. In the market for a ~25-30k used SUV, was torn between the Q5, Cherokee, Forester XT. I was set on the Q5 and XT until I drove the 4Runner. The Audi drove the best, the XT a tiny bit flimsy and geeky, though fast. The Jeep was just ... how to say... so basic-y Americana bro with an air of trying too hard, ( and the sales guy was as well). I chose the 4Runner knowing that this beast was going to last a long time, without spending any time or too much money in the shops, and that I could sell the thing for a really good price when I'm done with it. It's the perfect vessel for a person to take on adventures and ride the roads in any condition with a peace of mind. It doesn't try too hard and has all the right things a young guy needs in a steed. The upgraded 5th gen looks awesome, doesn't try hard yet maintains composure and style, and most importantly sticks to its roots and humility, something everyone could use a little more of these days.

+Luke Skywalking I think it looks awesome. It looks mean & masculine, but at the same time it also looks very simple and modest. Toyota didn't go overboard with chrome accents and other gimmicks, and kept the shape boxy. The pre-facelift 5th gen 4Runner looks way too plain IMO. Now that the FJC is gone, Toyota is trying to position the 4Runner as its aggressive looking offroader.

Hey Toyo! Remember me , the deployed GI from 2005? I Cant imagine the maintenance after 36,001 miles... I bought my firts 4Runner in 2002. The transmission died at 3,005 miles in 2005. I paid $3,089.00 to get it fixed ( a bargain at local non Toyota shop). Luckily I was deployed and was able to pay for the repairs. I have a 2006 4Runner and the repairs just keep adding on right after 3,000 miles. Luckily, my wife bought the exgended warranty with this klunker. Not covered under warranty are the tire pressure system. Each one cost about $250.00... Good luck....

Great review, loved the desert and quad-copter shots. Keep it up guys. I love Toyota and the T4R, but the positioning of it doesn't make sense, especially with the FJC going away. The hot topic wallet chain metaphor made me laugh. But seriously I wouldn’t trade my runner for anything. I haven’t had one single problem after all these years and it has taken me all around this beautiful country numerous times without a single hiccup. This thing is bulletproof and it’s just the most versatile suv imo. It’s big enough for enough cargo room to store whatever you want or passengers, yet it’s small and nimble enough to go on any trail. Imo it’s literally the perfect size for an all arounder. If you are just using it on road it’s still a great daily driver but it really shines doing both on and off road. I added a 2 and a half inch lift with 33 inch tires with falken wildpeak at3w’s and it literally is a tank.

I just bought the Premium model in Pearl Blue with the black TRD Wheels. Machine looks nice, inside and out, especially those wheels! And it handles pretty much like the last two 4-Runners I've had since 1990 and 2004 - SOLID. I wanted a lot of storage space in the back as well as a trailer hitch for my sail plane. I also like the big knobs for fan, temp, vent control and part time 4 wheel drive. Everything else out there today is too small or too refined looking (like all those crossovers). Guess I'm just part of that small but loyal group who just wants another 4-Runner. Hope they're still making them in 2028.

Is this the first time KBB has taken aerial shots of a car they're reviewing? I don't remember see that in any other reviews done by KBB until now. I kind of like the aerial shots from the, I assume, helicopter or (gasp) KBB secret satelite. A well done review either way. I'm looking forward to more reviews like this for vehicles that parade around with the "outdoorsy" look but can (or can't) actually back it up like car-based rivals (which was briefly mentioned in the review). *Hint hint* Could the next Subaru Outback or Forester review show us some off-road prowess in the review please? Or even the next SUV/CUV review KBB does? I know a lot of buyers don't come to KBB to find that kind of information but it'd be nice to see KBB exploring that kind of topic with SUV's and CUV's in some reviews. =P The old KBB videos kind of did (old Subaru Forester and Porsche Cayenne review from KBB).

I actually own one of these new 4runners (metallic red and everything) and after driving a few road trips in it, the ride quality is definitely not perfect. Yeah, it has Toyota's unquestionable reliability, a boat load of standard features, terrific offroad capabilities, and damn sharp looks (to me), but it has neither the associative prestige of a Porsche or Range Rover nor faultless city mannerisms. It doesn't flatten bumps perfectly, feels excessively floaty at high speed, and the transmission isn't very smooth shifting. But that's okay: in my case, I don't like looking like a twat and my ass is pretty tough, so all is well for me. Long story short, it's all down to personal preference, so no one can really judge you for your car buying decisions.
@joeracer3029 жыл бұрын
Lol'd when you said "4Runner's competition" because the 4Runner is a niche market with not much in the way of a true competitor. The closest thing to a competitor left would be the Jeep JK, and while those may win in off road capability there is no way a Chrysler product beats a Toyota in reliability. Chances are someone considering a Wrangler wouldn't consider a 4Runner, and vice versa. Both are niche markets. So, when you compare something like the 4Runner to vehicles that *used* to be true SUVs, body on frame, then I can't help but laugh. Maybe at one point the Explorer and Pathfinder were competition for the 4Runner, but now they're just another glorified soccer-mom-mobile. Who cares if an Explorer gets better gas mileage? When you hit 150k miles, when you hit where the pavement turns to dirt ... you'll want a 4Runner ...
@joeracer3029 жыл бұрын
***** Anything with good tires is exceptional in the snow, and anything with shit tires is terrible in the snow, regardless of all other factors. Nissan killed it after the 2012 model year. It DID compete with the 4Runner, but no longer as it is no longer in production.

I want one so bad! Wont finish med-school for another two years though :( Either gonna pick up a used Trail or TRD Pro in blue, or going to see what the new ones are like. My biggest gripe about this model is all the complaints about the engine and transmission. I drive an 03 4runner V8 right now...its 5-Speed. I'd be shelling out cash for a twelve years newer car for the same transmission and less torque. Still want it though! lol Going to wait and see what 2017 redesign brings.

***** LOL...Sounds like someone applied and didn't get in. I like dealing with people, and I like the work. As a student I have to do the jobs no one else wants, and I still wake up every morning looking forward to going into the hospital. My board scores were comfortably beyond what I needed to match into my dream career in Emergency medicine -mean income is 250-300k/year and you get benefits. Couple years of debt at most if I am careful with cash after picking up a new car. Then, 38-45 hours per week making 4.5-6K per week. Oh and I'm from Canada - WAY less malpractice insurance and getting sued over nonsense. -Love my job: Check! -More cash than Ill know what to do with: Check! -Similar hours to a blue collar Joe but 4-5 times their income: Check (And thats if I make the AVERAGE wage) -Not being on call so my time off is MINE: Check! -Status and respect (And gold digging sluts that I can bed when they see M.D.?): Check! -Saving lives and preventing suffering as my daily routine rather than playing with rocks or a calculator all day: Check! Sorry bro, I love my life and chosen career path. You can take that pity elsewhere bc its definitely not required here! I am very happy and looking fwd to the future. ;) And for what its worth, despite the grossly negative tone of your post, I hope you are as happy with your life with whatever it is you have chosen.

***** Well I'm sorry your uncle feels that way :S I've met plenty of doctors who hate their lives, and plenty who absolutely love it. So far I have not been phased by any of the negatives and the good more than outweighs the bad so Im going maintain the positive outlook ;) About your chosen path - Hey, I'm happy for you. You're doing what you love and getting paid for it. The world needs more people in the same boat. To me, I couldn't stand that for a day, but if its your gig then more power to you! Regarding the car, I live close to the US border so its certainly no issue! If its somewhere deeper in the US - road trip!

+Shuffle3956 Doctors are always in need, and always have a solid income in whatever field you're in. My father was an Orthopedic Surgeon for 15 years. The work is hard, but you help people tremendously. He made high 500's just from being an independent surgeon, and even more from his private practice employing 33 people and 4 mid-levels. It's a rough road to there though, 15 years of education was had. Some of it being engineering.

@davidrodriguez37919 жыл бұрын
+L. Thomas It didn't do well on the snow because the 4Runner had all season tires which are no good on snow which they've found out the hard way.

I like the 4Runner, but this car deserves a V8. The 4Runner's Exterior looks very powerful when you find it only has a V6. It's also not good value, the 4Runner TRD Pro costs near "$50,000". Sure it's a great car but with "$50k" you can buy a model s that has way much Horsepower, Faster, and it has Autopilot which can drive on its own. This car deserves to be $20k-($35k) for the TRD Pro.

+Matt Dathew No offense, but best of luck getting a Jeep for under 55k. Absolutely overpriced, terrible reliability and 25% less cargo space. I love the way this thing just IS, and doesn't need a ton of bells and whistles to work. I liked the way the Explorer drove more, but this thing will just go forever, has a huge aftermarket, and I can sell it with 100k on the clock for 20k.
@CACressida8 жыл бұрын
Who the hell buys a car because the stupid lines move on the screen? If you're too stupid to figure out how to back up a vehicle without looking at a screen then you shouldn't be driving anyway. Backup camera is there for added visibility, not total dependability.
@mattdathew27948 жыл бұрын
It's good comfort to have moving lines on a 40k+ vehicle, that's a lot of money. Even a 30k jeep has moving lines and cooler stuff...
@XploreAz8 жыл бұрын
CACressida is right. If you can't look in your mirrors to see where your wheels are without some lines on your screen turning with your wheels, then you shouldn't be driving. I have a JGC Overland which has this feature but it definitely isn't needed. I actually don't even notice it since I use my mirrors.

For folks that have to use a 4x4 for a living and use it everyday. All the fancy gadgetry and hi-tech bull does not impress. We like things that work and not having to rely on computer technology. We like manual shifting and real levers that operate the vehicle, wheels that lock up...etc. When you say the 4x4 lever sucks and a solenoid switch is better. Try being in a deep mud hole and the solenoid fails. Jeep has better ideas all manual stuff almost(A free running front end would be perfect).
@d1sturb3d1197 жыл бұрын
Rofl except for the fact that Jeep's break, their build quality has gone south after FCA took over. My solenoids are yet to go bad after 13 years. I see your point but there's a reason why they put those in. Typical cases of solenoids going bad relate to letting them sit for years without using the system and not refreshing the fluids.
