As a person that consistently makes standout reviews testing the AWD/4WD drivetrains and automatic transmission vs CVT systems; I think it speaks volumes that you chose this beautiful Toyota 4Runner with a 4WD automatic transmission. My family really wanted to get a Toyota 4Runner too. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards, Grandpa and Grandma are getting older, gas mileage and third row seating comfort are king, AWD is only second. The 5 seat 4Runner’s front fascia looks cooler than the 7 seater’s front end personally. Jeep Wranglers and Toyota 4Runners are so fun, without a doubt. AWD Toyota Highlanders and Honda Pilots just fit the bill. Thank you for sharing this video 👍

Great and informative review. I owned a 2017 4Runner and would say that it’s the best SUV made. I don’t know why the reviews are normally so hard on it. It’s not a CUV so it shouldn’t be in that category. It drives great for a truck based suv. CUV are just too car like for me. It can go anywhere and accommodate just about anything. I belong to a lot of 4Runner groups, and not a lot of people seem to have good things to say about those tires, even though they're standard equipment on the TRD Pro. I recently put a set of General Grabber ATX on my 2013 Trail, and I mostly like them. I went with the stock size, and the P rated load range. The one downside is that I lost a solid 2.5 MPG vs the stock Bridgestone Dueler HTS. I was getting pretty consistently 20.0- 20.5, now I'm sitting right around 17.5. Pretty disappointed in that, I specifically went with the stock size and load range in order to preserve MPG, but even in the stock size these tires to look beefier than the stockers, and they're definitely more aggressive which I guess translates to more rolling resistance. On the plus side, they tend to ride smooth, are quiet, and are good in the rain and and some slushy snow that we recently had. For the most part I really like them, however the loss of range is what irritates me. Not so much concerned about the additional fuel costs, it's just having to fill up 50 miles earlier it's kind of annoying. That's almost a full trip back and forth to work for me. If I were to do it again, I would look into the Toyo AT3, the Cooper AT3 4S, and the Continental Terrain Contact AT. Those are all slightly less aggressive tires that will probably be just as good off road while maybe being a little bit more fuel efficient. That's just a guess, no facts behind that assumption.

That 4runner walked up that hill like it was not even trying. I figured that there was going to be trouble ahead considering it was snowing and the hill looked wet and slick. Thanks for the great video.

I love everything about this 4Runner version. But I have been spoiled with fulltime 4WD like what is offered in the Limited version. I wish the TRD Pro came that way.
@trailrunnah88863 жыл бұрын
It's crazy to 20 years ago, that was standard on every 4 wheel drive 4Runner. It's odd that Toyota went backwards in regards to their transfer case options.
@JAMESWUERTELE3 жыл бұрын
I’ve always owned part time trucks, now my 2021 4Runner being part time. Works great for the snow, easy to shift in and out of 4hi. I guess I don’t see why this is backwards?
@Ktheodoss3 жыл бұрын
@@JAMESWUERTELE One thing can be just fine, and the other can be better. Fulltime 4WD like you see in the 4Runner Limited, or the Jeep Grand Cherokee, or Land Rover's many vehicles is just better. So when you go from better to just fine, that is in a sense going backwards. I have had both and it is just better. And I am not sure why Toyota would offer it on the Limited and not on the TRD versions. If I'm not mistaken, Toyota's venerable and capable Land Cruiser is fulltime 4WD.
@trailrunnah88863 жыл бұрын
@@JAMESWUERTELE on third gen 4Runners, they had a transfer case that allowed you to have two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive Hi, 4 wheel drive LOW, and 4 wheel drive full time. I am a fan of part-time as well, but having that full-time option is nice if you let someone else drive your 4Runner, who might not necessarily know how or when to shift in and out of four wheel drive in a purely part-time system. So if say your wife takes it when the weather is sketchy, just put it in 4wd full-time and not think about it.
@toyotaguy753 жыл бұрын
The only way full time 4wd is better than part time is with 3 lockers. The limited version is not as good for off-road. I hope they never change the true off-road models. Full time 4wd is more for street queens.

Fantastic no nonsense video on the capabilities of the 4Runner. I have a 2022 TRD ORP, my second 4Runner, and it is fantastic. The TRD Pro would have been $10K more in my area, not worth it. I agree the TRD OR is the best of all the options. I also have the big brother, a 2020 Landcruiser, and I can honestly say, I enjoy driving the 4Runner as much as or maybe a little more than the LC. As soon as Toyota messes up the next generation 4Runner by going with a 4 cylinder turbo engine and made in Mexico, the current generation 4Runners will be elevated to Landcruiser status. NOTE: The Bronco Sport is a Focus, the biggest name scam in the auto world, calling that vehicle a "Bronco"

Thanks for being just a regular guy and understanding that most can’t afford the TRD PRO trim.
@mach12513 жыл бұрын
TRD Pro is just TRD off-road with bunch of plastic parts, aluminum skid, aftermarket suspension, and mildest AT tires. Save the $10k, buy yourself Fox or Icon suspension and 33' off-road tires and now you have more capable vehicle. Steel skid is better because you can bang it out, plus you should invest into something way thicker anyway if you're going to encounter big rocks

@@mach1251 Buddy, I know the differences between the models. I can literally read the spec sheet. I only commented because it’s nice that Ryan didn’t buy the top of the line model because realistically most people do not buy that trim.

You are right about used versus new pricing. In 18’ I was looking for a used trail edition and ended up with a brand new 18’ TRD off-road non premium for $33k + tax/tag/title. During the same time, ironically my brother in law got a used 14’ trail for $31.5k.
@trailrunnah88863 жыл бұрын
When I bought mine two years ago, I ended up going way back to the 13 Trail, that was a good value used. It was still low twenties, but almost 50% less than a comparable new TRD OR. And honestly, the pre-face lifted ones have a few more unique standard features than the later ones, and they're a little bit more distinctive-looking in my opinion.
@pall51143 жыл бұрын
Hi I am looking at new 2021 TRD for the same reason, used 3-5yr old are not worth it. You got great price $33K what was the MSRP in 2018. For 2021 MRSP for TRD OF non-premium is $41,230 + tax/tag/title. Maybe you or any can share what I should expect for percentage off of MSRP. I am in NE CT area.

@@pall5114 Sure I can share. My MSRP on my 18' TRD off road non premium non KDSS was $40k and I paid $33k + tax/tag/title. I'm not sure of the percentage off of MSRP but I feel it's hard to compare the 21' to the earlier years like mine because remember the newer ones have new features like the apple car play etc, the safety sense, newer gauge cluster etc. My '18 TRD off road didn't come with those newer features which is why I feel it's harder to come down on pricing but you never know. I luckily dealt with a dealership who sold in volumes. I feel I got lucky with my deal because I wasn't going to pay more than $37k+ for a 4runner. If I couldn't reach a deal, I would have bought a used Lexus GX which I advise people to look at if they can't find a deal on a 4runner.

Great introduction video. I just got a 2021 TRD Off-road from Toyota of Bellevue. It's got a bunch of bolt on goodies cause I really wanted a TRD Pro. However suspension is still stock aside from a dealer installed leveling kit. Where is that area you tested your 4Runner? Would love to give it a go. Just subscribed ....I really like your reviews and now you're a Toyota brother...congrats on the new rig.
