Great video. How did the dive masters react? Which spot at Julian Rocks were you diving?

Julian Rocks was the scene of the famous honeymoon attack on divers in 1993, when an 18 footer was ploughing towards Debbie Ford and her newlywed husband, John, pushed her aside and took the hit. The problem with Byron is that the humpback whales migrate from Moreton Bay with their newborns close to shore and the Whites follow them, with attacks on surfers, divers or swimmers predictably taking place in a southern progression sometimes starting on the Tweed coast. That's not to say that everything is sunshine and lollipops on the northern run, though. Watch out when whales are about.

I lived in Byron for 15 years. Legends are hard to die. I worked at the dive centre and spoke with the captain who was on the boat that day. Everyone was already safe on the boat. The shark started circling the boat and the husband jumped in for a photo opportunity. He was never seen again.

We continued on for another 40 minutes dive. We were in trenches a little north on our way to cod hole. This was the first five mins of the dive
