When I watch Gracie, I can't help but think she always looks so "trained" in a sense. When Medvedeva, Wagner, Radionova (and many more, of course!) skate, you can tell they just love skating in addition to obviously, wanting to win.

+Emily Love That' true, I could never put my finger on it before but that is it. She never looks as if she is enjoying herself. She is not free. Very robotic and expressionless. Her mind is so focused that she can't enjoy it and her skating suffers from it.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. Gracie is skating with grace. she have respect for it like an artist, it’s not only about one show, she wants to be perfect and that’s why skaters like Ashley could never bear her. Ashley maybe giving a cool show but doesn’t have a beautiful smooth technic like Gracie. Gracie enjoys skating and when she DANCED and won in 2016 looking like a gypsy it was emotional and beautiful. This performance was lack of confidence and mentally issues. But she nailed the phoenix in the nationals and it was truly a piece of art #GracieGold

GET this young woman to a sport's psychologist now! The pressure that she is under at such a young age is immense. I know they are all under pressure but she is not dealing with it well. There really are 'flashes' of the performance she could give if she just relaxed.

+D D Joe she's with a sports psychologist. i understand she sees them quite a bit, so either she does desperately need it - or i think more likely it is actually perpetuating her own perception of herself as someone who has mental obstacles in competition and has the reverse effect of fueling her doubt.

Ally Reilly Apparently the major amount of the skater's body weight has to be taken off the skate blades and transferred to other body parts to be called a fall.
@judyi86718 жыл бұрын
+gallantrycross x Plus it took time for her to get out of that awkward position. Remember every second counts when you are skating a program. Mostly, skaters fall on their thighs and bounce right back up, but this took a little more time. You see her rushing to get back into the program after she stands back up. The music still goes even if you fall, so any disruption like an awkward fall is not good.

Gracie on being a coach and preventing her students from a paralyzing fear of failure: “I’m a pretty good teacher. But you know who’s the best teacher? Failure…If we’re so afraid of failure that we don’t try, how will we ever improve as skaters and grow as people? I’ve fallen a hundred thousand times in my skating career…so when a student describes themselves as ‘garbage’ after falling twice, [I respond] ‘What does that make me? The city dump?’ I don’t know when, where, or why, but falling has gotten a bad rap…I tell my students that the real failure occurs when they’re so afraid to mess up that they don’t make an effort.” (from her memoir)

Man did she look pale, scared and so nervous before this routine. I knew it wasn't going to end well. On top of that I never like her outfit for this routine and her hair was a mess. I wish she had vamped it up a bit more. I've always felt it you look good out there, you'll feel good too and have a more confidence to PERFORM. All that was missing sadly. I know she's not a natural bleached blond as well, but that is the look USFSA wants for her I bet. I want her to be herself and maybe go with her natural hair color and let go of the USFSA's expectations of her. I saw the maneuver they did with Evan working with Frank after the 06 Olympics and all the backing they gave him. Evan thrived in that position. Gracie is not. Yes she won Nationals, but it's a debatable win and I don't think she should have won that. She had no emotion and barely performed. I know she can be more than robotic. I just think she needs to be herself more and not this Ice Princess persona that's been created for her.

+Letissia Scott ah, in a perfect world! i actually love both johnny and tara as skaters. i prefer tara's commentary over johnny's - johnny quite frankly seems bored most of the time and im pretty sure he's actually mentioned that he's rarely excited by skating these days. (i think it was after ashley wagner's 2015 nationals performance). but they're alright i guess. i like the eurosport guys a lot. but no one can compare to dick button.

Kirsten Neville Yes I love both too. Tara is the reason I started to watch in 98 when she won. After falling in love with this sport in 98 I started watching and recording everything. I still have it all too. My KZbin channel is filled with Tara's pro career. She has been my idol since I was 13. It was on ABC's coverage of skating where Dick and Peggy taught me the elements of skating and what to look out for. I learned the differences in the jumps, the spins footwork and more. 98-03 for me is a time I miss and cherish. Learning about this sport and falling in love with it was one of the best things that has happened in my life. It got me through so tough times. Gymnastics is the same for me too.

In her memoir, Gracie reflects explains what it feels like to end a disappointing performance: “Imagine: You’ve just fucked up royally. Your worst nightmare has come to pass. But instead of disappearing behind a thunderhead of shame, you now have to stand at center ice and curtsy to the judges who are marking you down…to the crowd who has just witnessed your biggest failure…to the folks at home who gasped and then grabbed a handful of mixed nuts while you, after starving yourself for two years, hit the ice so hard that you’ll have a bruise in the morning. There you are, mouthing the words ‘Thank you’ ”

Gracie reminds me of Sasha. Both are incredible skaters, but really lack the mental toughness that it takes to become a multiple National & World Champion.
@joannix8 жыл бұрын
+Troy Turner what????? Look if you are comparing the mental side I kind of agree but Come on!!! Gracie never ever will be like Sasha in terms of artistry...even her falls looked gracious lol however this young lady Gold thought a pretty girl she just doesn´t do anything to my eyes...sorry to her fans...it´s not all about jumps..artistry..but also the mental part which is something I always regret to Sasha Cohen but still I ever watch her skating.
@troyaturner19798 жыл бұрын
joannix I'm comparing her to Sasha in terms of mental toughness. They both have their strengths (Gracie is a wonderful technician and Sasha is an incredible artist). The one thing that they both have in common is the inability to deliver under pressure and skate consistently. The judges are wanting to give Gracie the major titles in the same way that they were willing to give the very same titles to Sasha in her prime. But both skaters couldn't or can't deliver and it's frustrating. It's not a matter of Gracie having faulty jumping technique or not being well trained. It's all a mental game, the same as is was with Sasha. Both cant get out of their own way or out of their own heads to deliver clean consistent programs every time.
@joannix8 жыл бұрын
True about consistency but in the artistry part Sasha is way way more than Gracie....she just has strong elements..cool!! but that´s all but if she faces to someone who has great technique, amazing artistry and a though mental side..sorry to all the tittles Miss Gold can ever pretend at least the others fail...just my honest opinion!
@troyaturner19798 жыл бұрын
joannix I agree. Even Michelle Kwan knew that in order to beat Maria or Irina, she had to skate a clean, lights out performance. That's how she won her 3rd and 4th world titles. Maybe Gracie needs to sit down and speak with Michelle or with a sports psychologist in order to figure what she's not doing to mentally prepare herself for competition.

She choked again. Champions don't do that. Didn't she mess up last year at Worlds as well.? Also, I have never liked the way she is so expressionless when she skates. Like a mannequin. Just ignores the audience. It is almost as if she is somewhere else. Maybe if she'd relax and 'performed' more, she wouldn't worry about choking.

She seems very nervous here, and she seemed very nervous during practice that morning as well. She really needs to stop putting so much emphasis on the jumps and start focusing on performing. What I noticed in practices was that Gracie seemed nervous and jumped for most of the session. Ashley, however, seemed calm the whole week and didn't overdo the jumping.

@jcbroadw8 жыл бұрын
She needs a change. New coach, new choreographer (seriously, WHY FIREBIRD), something! She has good jumping technique, but so do Miyahara, Medvedeva, Asada, etc., and it seems to fail her at crucial moments and she just doesn't have a strong components backbone to help prop her up like Ashley Wagner (who is not a strong technical skater, and I think she'd agree with that) does. I think part of that issue stems from these programs that just do NOT suit her at all and have zero life in them, especially when she makes a mistake and gets discouraged (see: 2:49).
@JimmyZoole8 жыл бұрын
+jcbroadw I don't think the problem is with the program. Not that I'm a fan of this program (like, how many times can we see someone skate to Firebird before we're ready to puke) but if Ashley Wagner was given this exact same program, she would skate it with a lot more fire and passion. She's a very talented jumper and spinner but a very flat performer in competition with an obvious Sasha Cohen-esque mental block that causes her to choke. (My opinion at least.)
@jcbroadw8 жыл бұрын
+Dennis G I think that's totally valid, for sure. I definitely don't find her a compelling performer, but I wonder if she might get better in that aspect of her skating if she had better material to work with- or at least, material that she could connect to more. And I definitely agree she has got some kind of mental performance issues. At this point in her career she's got to change something in her coaching NOW- next year is already a pre-Olympic year and if she's going to make a coaching change it should be sooner rather than later.
@MsJubjubbird8 жыл бұрын
+jcbroadw Thing is she can do it. Her performance at Skate America was great. And Nationals, even though she fell, had so much passion. For her it's all in the mind. When she relaxes she's great. When she lets the pressure creep in, she tightens up and there's no expression and the errors creep in more. Some people have the mind of a champion and some do not.
@jcbroadw8 жыл бұрын
+MsJubjubbird Eh, I might disagree with that in part. I think this program is a real dud, and I would argue that her programs in general feel incredibly generic and don't push her on the artistic side at all. I don't even think she knows what kind of skater she wants to be which is why I think she desperately needs to explore other options for coaching and choreography as well as address her mental performance issues.
@MsJubjubbird8 жыл бұрын
jcbroadw Yeah I think she needs a new coach. Or maybe Frank shouldn't be coaching? I mean I know he has produced some great skaters in the past but he's now got a generation of teenagers that have been brought up in the "you are special" era where they are pampered a lot and protected to the point where they're risk averse. A different approach is needed with that. It may even be better for her to go to Brian in Canada or something and train out of the country where there's less pressure. I think Frank would be better off coaching someone like Satoko, with her classic style and never say die attitude.

snofagun1814 Sorry, I just don't see how she is more talented than everybody else in top 6. The girl has serious problems with her interpretation and artistry. I can't even recollect any program of hers that would have left any impression on me or created any memorable image. She has power and speed but so many other skaters do, like Pogorilaya, for example. Gracie is stunningly beautiful but Pogorilaya is beautiful too. Does it mean that Gracie has more talent? I don't think so. She has great technique but most of the time it lets her down, that's all.
@MrReed3148 жыл бұрын
+snofagun1814I disagree. I have always wondered what it was that people saw in her that was so special. Technique of jumps and footwork are important, of course, but the competitions are littered with young skaters with good or great technique. Maybe not as good, but certainly comparable. But presentation scores are there for a reason, to display the best truly 'all around' skater. They are an intregal aspect of competition scoring. And unfortunately for Gracie, she has always been a 'one-dimension' skater. Not when compared to Ashley, Kerrigan, Kwan, Kristi, etc. great techs as well as great perfomers. Jump, spins, footwork and looks can only carry you so far, you have to also evolve. It's like she fell into a 'rut', and can't find a way out of it. And she has never been as good as Medvedeva at jumps or skating under pressure. It might be time for her to quit competition and join the Ice Capades where she will have more freedom and less stress, plus more money.
