We take the MT to JHS Racing to have the Power Commander V mapped, searching for the 150bhp rear wheel figure goal! Oh, apologies in advance, not our best video work but, hey, it's Xmas and we've other stuff to do, hic... s'cuse me...

Top video BJ, how did the bike feel after the remap, did it still feel edgy and raw or was the power massively smoothed out now, also was it mapped in standard mode.. cheers

BJ is your bike down on power as standard? Other mt10's I have watched on dyno'd runs are averaging 152rwbhp with a jump to 159 with a tune or flash. Is your dyno conservative with its figures or theirs high? With the tune how many miles do you get to a tank before a refill on this already thirsty bike?
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
It's just a different dyno, they all read different figures pretty much, then there's what correction factor does an operator use, and so on. The important thing for us is always using the same one for magazine work, as it's in comparing bikes on the same dyno that's important, not necessarily the outright figures. As an example, we once stuck a race team's bike on the JHS dyno, this race team were selling them to the public as 205bhp (rear wheel) machines (about five or six years ago this was) and had the dyno charts to prove it. On the JHS one it made 177bhp, a big difference, but James showed us how flicking a few options could get that 177 figure a lot closer to theirs of 205. So, again, for us it's all about using the same dyno really. Not sure on fuel yet but will say in next blog.

Sorry, could find any where else to post. Topic: 2015 S1000RR DDC vs R1M/2017 Fireblade From my understanding both the R1M/2017 Fireblade had electronic suspension that has independent compression and rebound adjustment. The 2015 onwards S1000RR with DDC needs an additional "fork travel sensor (2D)" for the same (independent compression and rebound adjustment) How does the R1M/2017 Fireblade achieve this? Is there an internal fork travel sensor? At some point please consider doing a video or magazine feature on this

Hi BJ, do you have smog block off plates fitted? If not did James block off the air induction before measuring the A/F ratio?
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
No block off plates fitted, at least none I know about!
@rekluseman666
@rekluseman666 7 жыл бұрын
Then that can give a false A/F read from the lambda sensor unless the fresh air feed to the exhaust ports are isolated. I have block off plates for mine which i have not fitted yet but will do before any dyno work for an accurate read. www.r1-forum.com/forums/153-graves-motorsports/252210-graves-garage-why-use-smog-block-off-plates-what-do-they-do.html

Interesting, and thanks for the link, however were that the case the MT would run poorly, as the post suggested. But it doesn't, it's stronger than it's ever been and the throttle response has never been better than after the mapping. I'll ask James, maybe he did something I didn't notice because it's running perfectly. Should point out the Graves blank off plates noted and described in the post (by Graves) are made and sold by, er, Graves, right? Just having fun!

Me either, argue with the theory that is, except if what is mentioned is right the MT should be running like a two-legged dog, but it's never been better. There's a hole somewhere, maybe James will be able to fill it!

Current MT09 owner here and mate this series of yours is making me want an MT-10 and I'm not even a fan of the crossplane noise, I'm more of a fan of a traditional inline 4 (don't judge me, I've never heard it in person, only in videos and that certainly doesn't do it justice). Good work! PS.How does it really sounds in person tho?

That swingarm conversion on the R1 is very sexy. Have you noticed much difference in fuel economy with the PC fitted, or is it too early to tell/weather too grotty for a proper test?

When a person gets there bike done with the power commander you've only done one map, does it cost extra to map the other modes then. Wouldn't it be better to just Flash the ECU with a base tune? I went with the Woolich race tune on the MT-10 and every mode works well, plus all the race tools are there to use in the same tune. Far better value and not piggy backing the system with can lead to faults. I've had power commanders before that become faulty due to moisture and had to replace it. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into this series, happy new year.
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
There are benefits and drawbacks to both really, so it just depends on your point of view. PCs are tried, tested and if the PC survives fine you can recoup some cash. A flash gives you more options, but you can't get anything back from it, so really it's all down to personal perception of value I guess.
@WozzasSportsCruiserRides

Hope your break was grand, always a lot of good info. I think only tuning 30% of the bikes settings with the Commander isn't good value for money. The Woolich race tune turn off all The O2 sensors, runs the base tune for all the power settings and provide all race tools in the one package. I think you should look into this yourself as Yamaha Australia have been following this tune I did on my bike. Still, very good of you to provide such detail in your video, people don't realize just how much of yourself goes into video production. Cheers, all the best to you.

In Australia I went to Procycle Dyno. There just the same as James the Dyno specialist in this series. I know there are quite a few shops at there in Australia that do this and if your in other parts of the world the internet is a great place to look. Sorry I'm not that helpful. cheers.

Wozza's Sports Cruiser Rides no it's my bad I didn't realise you where in oz. The ecu flash appeals to me so much more than the standard power commander as you can do so much more but at the same time so much more can go wrong. I'm not arsed about being able to take it off and get some money back, I'm more interested in getting the most out of the bike. It takes out the top speed limiter for a start. I need to research who's got the expertise to fiddle with it in the UK. Maybe look at the mt09 forums as they have some really good results. I wonder though can you combine a power commander with the ecu software? Now that's a question! Lol

The sound, NEVER GETS OLD. Good work, ma man. Keep us posted. Any chance you guys could get an SP variant for a review or modding ? I don't even know if it's out by now. Cheers and happy new year ! 😊👍 Forgot to add: That R1's swing arm looks like the Cat's Meow. Fast Bikes, would you guys ask your dyno guy what are he's thoughts about the auto tuning feature offered to work with PC ?
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, we'll have the launch for the SP (March I think) and then Yamaha will let us keep this bike long enough to put it up against the SP. we will ask, we've used them a couple of times in the past and they're pretty good, but we usually go for a bespoke map most of the time.

Great video again BJ! Always a pleasure to watch. Learning a lot! Was wondering though: 1) Besides block off plates, was the stock lamda sensors active during the dyno, 2) if a bone stock MT10 were to do a dyno what hp gains do you think it'll get? Thanks for all the hardwork and research!
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think there are any, and the lamda sensors fit into the SP y-piece just fine. In the past when we've done stock Power Commander stuff we've had good results - but not huge power-wise. On a 2011 GSX-R 750, for example, we had a 3bhp increase in power across the board with a max of 4bhp at the top, and a 3-4Nm of torque increase across the entire range too. Not giant, but still impressive with a stock exhaust. More impressive was the improved fuel economy and throttle response - however - that isn't a Euro4 bike so any gains on one of those will be slighter I'd imagine.

If a Power Commander in principle adjustments the fuel mix in the light of the lambda, why does not the original bike do this it self?
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
It does to a certain degree, hence why when the exhaust was put on sans PC V, and wasn't mapped at all, the ECU managed to keep the air-fuel ratio at a more than acceptable level. Not all ECUs do this though, and some like the MT's do just enough, or it's just the luck of the draw. Really, if you stick on any exhaust we'd always recommend you get the fuelling done, be that PC or ECU flash, or whatever, just as a matter of course.
@knutjohansen8244
@knutjohansen8244 7 жыл бұрын
Does that mean that power commander without doing anything with the exhaust is not helpful
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
A PC won't do anything at all unless it's given instructions, be that a map downloaded off the net or supplied by Dynojet, or a bespoke map as we did here. We have had positive results mapping a PC with a completely stock exhaust system though, especially at the throttle.

James seems to consistently make little mentions of doing internal mods to this bike. I assume Yamaha wouldn't allow that, but man I'd love to see what's possible with a more aggressive cam profile. My FZ-10 is theoritcally making around 150whp as well (decat, 2WDW FlashTune), and I just find myself wanting more power! Have you discussed the possibilities of internal engine work with JHS, even if it's not possible on this long-term loaner?
@fastbikes
@fastbikes 7 жыл бұрын
I'll ask him the next time around. Thing about the MT engine, is that it isn't just a detuned version of the R1's, it's different in quite a few significant areas and rather similar in others. Probably just easier to buy an R1 motor and sling her in, although it'd be completely ridiculous and the standard MT chassis would tie itself in knots with 184bhp!
@hexthank
@hexthank 7 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I think the cylinder head is different as well, but I'd imagine that with the latest EPA restrictions and what-not, the cams are fairly conservative. Definitely interested in what he has to say! Thank you for putting these videos together, I look forward to each episode.

No the bike's air/fuel is fine with the exhaust and the stock ECU settings running the show, which I think James covered in Ep 8. On some bikes, an exhaust swap does fluff them up a bit, or it runs too lean, but not in this case. The bike will be stock when it gets returned to Yamaha, FYI. HNY too!

Ok i want to change the exhaust on my R1 but its expensive and i was told i need a pcv and a map or i risk damage the engine. But its not like i need the extra power really and also the tracks in sweden are super anal about the sound restrctions we have so im very unsure about the whole thing.

What I can say is that when we put a y-piece and can (A Pipewerx unit) on our 1015 R1, the air-fuel was okay, still in acceptable parameters. So long as it is, you should be fine - but we'd still recommend getting the fuelling done regardless, not so much for extra boom and torque (Though we did get huge increases in power and torque through the midrange, 12bhp at one point!), but more importantly a much improved throttle response. Look through our video section and you'll find that R1-Pipewerx dyno run.

if the power commander is used to improve throttle, fueling etc, why do insurance companies put your insurance up?

Probably because they can improve power and torque, thereby in their eyes making it more prone to incident - more power = more speed. That's just a guess mind you!
