Because of Consumer Reports and your review of the Audi A4, I had to tried one. Recently rented one from SilverCar in San Fran for four days. By the time I finished, I can honestly say I was converted favorably to two things I have never been a fan of. 1) Turbo 4 engines and 2) german cars. I've always been a fan of Asian luxury vehicles like the Lexus vehicles I have owned. They were smooth, sweet and had V6's. But now I realize that I was just floating only, which was okay at the time. I've rented the BMW and A3, as well. Personally I felt the BMW felt inside as solid as a rock, and it is a little quieter on coarse pavement. But the Audi A4 felt a little more lightweight and easier to toss around. Took it into the twisty paths of highway 50 at night, with darks cliffs and no guard rails (scared myself almost to death for over an hour) up to South Lake Tahoe. I couldn't turn around and I couldn't slow down, because of the pressure from folks who obviously drive that mountain path everyday. I finally got behind someone in a station wagon and follow him up the twisty mountains with tight curves and switchbacks. It was the surefooted nature of the Audi A4, that helped me make it through. On several short straight sections the station wagon tried to distance itself. The smooth surge from the A4 Quattro, immediately closed the gap. It was the ultimate test drive and something I'd never do again (drive in strange mountains at night). But the car proved itself a more confident driver than I was. I'm sold, it will be my next car.

He's right about the MPG's being underrated. Audi is notorious for underrating it's power too. My wife and I were getting 500 miles per tank on a 2,000 mile drive (to and fro)... We couldn't believe how good the mileage was.

Small point, but reviews should note when premium gasoline is required. This adds 20% to fuel cost, when comparing gas mileage.

I’ve had 2 Audi A3s and ran both of them to over 150k km. Roads are pretty bad where I live but I had absolutely nothing ( except a window switch) go wrong with either car. My current A3 still feels like new compared to the Ford I hired for a week which had only 2k on the clock . I’m about to get an A4.

Nice camera work as always, but I've got ask; why would you want a large boot if the rear seats are unusable? Surely if someone cares about the boot but doesn't plan to use the rear seat, wouldn't they just go for a 4-series or Audi A5?

Henry Kincaid Well it's not that the A4 really cares about the cargo capacity, however it is a no compromise design. Look at the car design in general and how to roof structure look, now if you move the rear seat further to the back then the headroom would be way too compromised, so the rear seat in a way only have a small zone of flexibility- more headroom equal less leg room, and more leg room equal less headroom. The tunnel in the center is there to facilitate the AWD driveshaft and possibly some exhaust piping; now we are left with a big space for the trunk and since there is nothing the car do about the rear seat, they'd just make the best out of their trunk; after all it's still a bragging feature for cars to sell. Some people do care for both rear passenger and the cargo area, even though I agree your point about getting an A5 occasionally when you need to haul 5 people the A4(even though compromised in the back) is still much more comfortable then the A5.

A beautiful, well crafted if slightly sedate sedan. I think it looks better than the B8 A4, but the competition is getting fierce and nothing about the B9 A4 makes me too excited. Not a bad purchase per say, but I wonder what will be the draw of choosing this one over its more characterful competition from Mercedes, Lexus, BMW, Volvo, Infiniti and Jaguar.

Pretty sure this is the segment leader, not many people will care about that it's front heavy and under steer when you push it to the limit. This is the best Turbo 4 Germany has to offer.

ast5515 European reviews of cars differ significantly from American reviews; very different priorities, very different roads. Cadillacs review well in the US, but review terribly in Europe; same thing with Infiniti, US-spec trucks and SUVs, Hyundai (especially Genesis), and Chrysler products. Even the new Honda Civic has had the issue; it reviews incredibly well in the US, but didn't go down so well in the UK

The biggest thing people complain about in the Civic is the rear headroom. The US doesn't get the hatch as far as I know, so again, might not be the best comparison, but it really is tight back there. But in terms of driving, every review I've seen was positive.

The fit and finish is absolutely impeccable even though the cabin feels a bit sterile on the inside, devoid of emotion. The exterior design however, is bland IMHO and lacks any passion. It does not seem cohesive to my eye. The C Class, Jaguar XE, Lexus IS and even the 3 Series look much better in their current iterations.

It comes down to personal preference, styling is subjective, both have excellent interiors, the A4 is faster, both have average reliability, the C300 does come with a panoramic sunroof but you can't get that on the A4
