Great video! I have owned one for a week now and you hit every complaint and complement I have for it. Coming from an MDX, I'd say that the lack of storage space in the front of the Q7 is a problem. I like to have an assortment of items available and there is just no place to hide them. Other big complaints are the lack of hidden storage in the back and some bugs with the car/ MMI

I am a life long motorhead. Your site is one of the first I visit when starting to research a car. Excellent review as always as far as usable practical auto advice. I agree the ZF 8 speed is a buttery smooth masterpiece of a transmission. I have beat on a ZF for 85,000 miles with a pos 2011 550xi (wifes car). 19.4 mpg combined sucks, I hoped for 21.

From a middle class point of view, the Ford Flex seems a much better bargain. After a couple of midwestern winters and a few camping trips, a considerable amount of shine will be worn off the much nicer and expensive cars. The gadgetry involved in power folding seats seems a bit silly as well. Still, that is one nice wagon! Great review as usual Alex.

This is a great review. It is probably worth mentioning that even though fuel consumption is very similar between Q7 and XC90 (maybe XC90 little better) the difference is that XC90 will require regular gas versus premium gas for Q7. Overall great vehicle except exterior rear and interior front panel.

I have waited for your review on the Q7 since i saw your review on the XC90 and you didn't disappoint. I do respect your opinion on the two cars but will have to say that i disagree with your verdict. The XC90 is a great step forward for volvo, no doubt. I drove every car you mentioned, ML, GL, MDX, X5, Escalade, Yukon, QX60, QX80, etc. This is the luxury sector and the XC90 doesn't compare to the Q7 in quality or ride. Also the luxury section is not about value it is simply about how does the car cushion you and in that respect the Q7 is way above the volvo. The engine note for the XC90 on the T6 didn't have the sound of a car, as i configured it, of over 75k. The XC90 cannot match the Q7 on fit and finish, nor can it beat it when it comes to ride quality. Also have you lifted the 2nd row to get into the volvos third row? Do that in the volvo then do it in the Q7 and tell me what you think. The Q7 is so well done. The Volvo is great if you have driven good utility cars like the Pathfinder or MDX in the past. If you are stepping out of a BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Range Rover, the volvo just doesn't compare to the Q7. I still enjoyed your review keep up the great work. Also you may have mentioned this somewhere in the past, but what do you drive?

+Ralph Great Observation. How would you rate GL550 OR Range Rover Sport Supercharged with Q7 (Purely in terms of Urban driving)? Thank you
@rnwakoby8 жыл бұрын
+Saffron Maverick I'll still give it to the Q7 with the air suspension. I didn't drive a Q7 without the air suspension so not sure how that will ride. My rating will be Q7, RR Sport, GL but the difference for me is more about sitting position and cabin noise in addition to actual ride. All ride very well as far as urban driving goes but for me the Q7 is more car like than the others and doesn't feel like you have too much car around you. Hope that helps. Thanks for asking

i drive mostly highways and mountain roads, and i average 26mpg. When driving in town, i was at 22, and I don't have a light foot. So to average at 19, you must do a lot of city driving...you don't get that kind of car for mileage but frankly, it's really not that bad.
@kmorness8 жыл бұрын
I accidentally stumbled onto your reviews while briefly looking at the horribly overpriced GMC Yukon. I had a friend that had a Yukon around the year 2000 and they were amazing back then. But they sure don't hold up today, especially for the price. I've had my eye on a SQ5 for awhile, but my wife really prefers I apply the ridiculous money towards a 7 seater... so I can use that. I really like Audis and their sweet spot of price/value/luxury. I test drove a Ford Explorer Platinum recently and while it had amazing value, I just couldn't get past the gas guzzling 6-speed laggy transmission. A similarly equipped Audi costs 30-40% more, but is far more satisfying in every way. I do note you prefer the Volvo XC90 over the Q7, but I do think the Audi has a superior look, and I value power over handling & economy. The ratings were rather close. I do feel your reviews are unbelievably unbiased, unlike any I've ever seen. So keep up the good work. I hope I can somehow magically justify the ridiculous price of the upcoming SQ7... probably a little too far :)

Last I checked this was based on the MLB Evo chassis which underpins the new A4. That car you can get in front wheel drive and this Q7 you can also spec in front wheel drive in Europe hence the car's FWD origins. Just because the engine is mounted longitudinally does not mean that it can't be FWD.
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
This is somewhat complicated. The ability for Audi to make the cars in a front wheel drive form is effect, not cause. The Quattro design puts the engine in front of the transmission and front axle. This makes it "easy" to make the car FWD in a relative sense vs a design likes BMW engine layout. This can result in lower costs and depending on the design higher efficiency. However the placement of the engine is the result of the design of Quatto and the FWD models are more of a side effect of the general design not the cause of the design.
@jh5kl8 жыл бұрын
+Alex on Autos Quattro and engine position have nothing to do with each other
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
+jh5kl They absolutely do. By using a longitudinal transmission an integrated center differential and front differential all in the same case it causes the engine and torque converter to be in front of the front axle. It is just not possible for this Quattro system to have the engine anywhere else.
@jh5kl8 жыл бұрын
Alex on Autos thats not true, it is possible. in these segments you just don t find midengine placements, you are fully blaming on quattro when for example audi r8 has Quattro and an engine not in the outter exteme of axle
@AAutoBuyersGuide8 жыл бұрын
+jh5kl Quattro in the traditional sense cannot be a midengine design or even an engine over axle design. The R8 does not use a traditional Quattro system, nor does the TT, A3, etc which use a transverse AWD system like most FWD based cars. The R8's design is wildly inefficient in terms of space utilisation because the transmission is on one side of an axle and the engine on the other so if a similar system were used for instance on the Q7 it would result in a massive hood which would push the body rearward and cut interior space by a large percentage. This may improve the weight balance, but at what cost? Audi's traditional Quattro system found in their core models A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, Q5, Q7 causes a front heavy weight balance and an engine that's in front of the front axle period.

Alex, I wish I had found your videos earlier. I worked hard to compile the info you presented here. I am trying to decide between the XC90 and the Q7 so this video was perfect for me. Thanks for pointing out the lack of a spare tire. I don't think that omission gets enough attention. And in Europe, they can choose between the 3rd row and the spare tire. Good description about the 2nd row being somewhat more cumbersome to flip forward, though I think that probably should have knocked it down a point from the 10 you gave it. I think it is also worth pointing out that the return/default position for the 2nd row seats is straight upright where few would want to keep it so every time you move the seat forward to access the back, you need to readjust your seat angle to be back where it is more comfortable and for that I would have knocked Audi down another point. Neither of these is an issue with the XC90.

I don't know any car that starts at the 80K range except the Porsche 911..For the price of a P90D you could get 2 Q7 lol And Alex, PLEASE review the Model X. How have you not yet?!? Lol must be hard to get one.
@gunnyo508 жыл бұрын
+Jordan L Personally I would take this car over the Tesla Model X which is not there yet. Tesla needs more superchargers to make their cars more viable for customers. And yes the prices for their teslas are extremely high. You can get more bang for your buck specking out these cars ie Audi, BMW, and the mercs than the teslas.
