I live in California..... those charging stations are not free. You either pay for the charger, or you pay for the parking space. It's actually cheaper to just drive a Prius at $2 per 50 miles than to charge a Volt. (Prius is also 10 grand cheaper to buy.) ,

As soon as I hear, “the gasoline engine kicks in as soon as the electricity runs out” I know Micah knows very little about the Volt. I drove a 2013 Volt 139,000 miles 5 years and traded it in two weeks ago for a 2016 Volt. I never ran out of battery on my 80 mile one way commute to work 5 days per week, nor my trip to Las Vegas or any long distance drive. Best vehicle ever. Chevy please keep making this vehicle!!

Its a great car with almost nothing invested into marketing and brand awareness. Most people I've spoke to either never heard of the Volt, or are confused in thinking its a hybrid. If there's ever a car that needs a full-blown integrated marketing campaign, its the Volt. It needs a tagline and a plug that its not like everything else...its better.

Ah, yes, they did kill off the EV1 - for good reasons. The batteries available at the time were just not up to the task of making a car that would present minimal movement restrictions to the driving public. But take heart, they continued their research and brought out the Volt, then the Spark, and now the Bolt. What EV1 owner wouldn't find any of those to be a big improvement. And as to the reliability and quality of the Volt - I'm sold. Have two, a Gen 1 and a Gen 2 and the only car on the market that gives me more efficiency and travel freedom (not having to plan around supercharger locations for example) than the Gen 1 Volt is the Gen 2 Volt. The EV1 was an idea looking for a power source - now we have one.

J. Wahlquist, EXACTLY. I only have a gen 2, a '19 Volt Premier. I can't say enough about the car's efficiency, and simply love it in general. Honestly, everyone I know who has one (or more) or anyone I've spoken-to, absolutely loves their Volt. It's sad, that people make statements and assumptions based on half-truths and outright lies, not having driven or owned the car.

I like the looks of the Volt. I'm deciding between this and a Prius. The one huge drawback of the Prius for me is Toyota's entune app suite. I want to just be able to use android auto. I also don't get why people think Prius are ugly. I think they're gorgeous. At least the newer models.

+2much Time While I can't compare the new Volt and Prius, I did use to drive a 2014 Prius, and now drive a 2014 Volt. The Prius is more sluggish, and doesn't like to go fast, at least if you want good mpg numbers. The Volt was far faster, and quieter on the freeway for me. It also handled bumps a little better than the Prius did. Though the 2014 Volt was rated for 38 miles on electric, I easily got 44. If I didn't drive with a lead foot, I managed to hit 51 miles. Which is more than enough for my 38 mile round trip work commute. In winter I'm getting about 28 miles or so, but if I don't use the heat then I can still make my work commute on electric alone. I had to get gas for the Prius every two weeks on average. With the Volt, I've filled it up four times since early September 2015. The cold weather is forcing me to use some gas, but still not nearly as much as the Prius. Once it warms up again, I anticipate I won't need to use gas regularly again until next fall, unless I take a long distance trip somewhere, which the Volt can also do. The Prius does have more cargo room in the back, and can seat 5 people if that's important to you. But I found out that the Volt is also a hatchback, and could still easily fit all my groceries in the back, and it's just me in the car like 90% of the time.

Just going off of some numbers Tesla will quote you, It costs about $5-10 to recharge the P-100d. Just saying you got 250 miles off of a charge and have a car that gets 35 mpg you would spend about $14-$21 to travel the same distance in the gas car. If you drove 40 miles a day, all commute so all electric in the volt, making up 1,200 miles every 30 days the electricity cost would be about $24-$48 and gas cost would be about $68-$102. Extrapolating that out to a year that range is $288-$576 in electrical costs and $822-$1234 in gas costs. So your saving range varies from $246-$946 a year in this scenario. It is cheaper, but not by as much as you'd hope. If you change the mileage of the gas car to 25 mpg and daily commute to 45 miles the numbers become more convincing. In this scenario possible saving vary from $648-$1,620 a year. Not really world changing numbers I'll be honest. For perspective, if you had a Gen 1 Honda Insight and got 63mpg on your commute (which is a conservative estimate honestly) you would save very little in gas money. You could actually lose money on fuel costs compared to buying a Volt depending on how gas/electricity costs are where you live.

The Gen 1 Volt (model year 2011-15) takes about 10 kWh to charge up. Figure with charging losses, it'll probably be closer to 13 kWh. Multiply your electricity rate by 13 to get a rough idea of the cost. So using the national average for electricity of 12 cents, it would be 13 * .12 = about $1.56. If you drove it everyday, and fully drained the battery each time, you'd spend a little under $50 a month on electricity. And this is assuming you fully drain the battery everyday. If you don't, it'll be slightly cheaper since you didn't drain your battery all the way. For Gen 2 Volts (2016/17 models), you can use about 14.5 kWh. So with charging losses, it'll be around 17 kWh to fully charge the Gen 2. Using the average electricity cost again, it'll be about $2.47 to fully charge up the Gen 2. Or about $75 a month in electricity. Some utility companies also offer "time of use", meaning your electricity costs are higher during the day, but much lower at night. And still others have a special rate for EV's, but you'll have to contact your local power company to find out if they do it or not. So if you're spending more than $80 on gas a month, the Volt will definitely save you on fuel costs, especially if you only need to visit the gas station once every few months. But there's other nice things about the Volt too. Maintenance is a lot cheaper compared to a gas car. The first 45k miles of scheduled maintenance consists of tire rotations every 7500 miles. Oil changes are whenever the Volt tells you (it has an oil life meter you can select in the left dash screen), or every 2 years if you don't use gas that much.

Your local dealers assume this color isn't popular, so they go for other ones that people are more likely to pick. If you want this color, you may have to get a local dealer to do a dealer swap/trade with another Chevy dealership that may be hundreds of miles away. Or special order one, and specify this color in addition to whatever options you want. Or find one at a far away dealership using car buying sites, and then fly out there, and drive it back home.

I test drove this car and for a car of this size the interior is really constricted. The pillars in these cars are huge causing crazy blind spots and very low making it painful to get in the car. The left foot rest is way to tall to be comfortable. I think that GM left the wind tunnel modelling computers on too long. They should have sacrificed some of the wind tunnel results to make the car comfortable to enter and egress. The drive train is amazing I wish it was available in a normal size car. Also how about putting that battery under the car and not between the seats! The battery is like a passenger itself.

Get a used Volt. They're dirt cheap but are pretty nice cars. Definitely more fun to drive than say a used Corolla or Civic. And if you have a place to plug in consistently it'll save you even more on gas than even a Prius would.

It's only available on the Premier trim, which is the top trim level. You can also get safety features in the Driver Confidence packages such as blind spot monitoring, auto-high beams, lane keep assist/departure warning, rear cross traffic alert. You can also get ACC, or Adaptive Cruise Control, which basically means if the car in front of you starts slowing down, your Volt will slow down as well. If they start to speed, it'll also increase its speed to match them. Though it's no Tesla Autopilot, they're still pretty nice features to have.

About 13 kWh or so in the 2011-15 Volts. Around 17 kWh for the 2016/17 models. Multiply those by your local electricity rate to get a rough idea of how much it'll cost to charge it. To simplify it, you'll probably spend about $30-80 a month on electricity to charge the Volt. Seems like a lot initially, but you're also not having to buy gas every week anymore either. So if you're spending $50 a week on gas, that's $200 a month. And we all know gas prices fluctuate like crazy, so that $50 can easily turn into $60-70 a week.

Also after the Volt battery drains empty, it is only averaging 41 mpg in pure gas mode (example: driving LA to Vegas or SanFran). The Prius will average 50mpg and therefore still be the cheaper car. AND the Prius (or any standard gasoline/diesel car) costs 15,000 dollars less to buy than volt. These are the basic facts which car reviewers of the Volt or plugins never, ever mention to their audience .

+electrictroy2010 Are you including the plug-in tax credit for that? It brings the Volt's cost down to the mid $20k range, right around where the Prius is. As for gas prices, it won't stay this "low" forever. It's going to go back up at some point, now that Wall Street speculators and OPEC has had a taste for $80+ a barrel of oil. They're going to want that again sooner or later. If you're driving long distances for work, like 200 miles a day or more, then yes, the Prius will save more on gas. But most people do about 50 miles or less on a round trip work commute. The Volt will easily handle that. For a lot of people, they won't even need to use gas for long periods of time in the Volt, whereas the Prius is always burning gas whenever you drive it. Granted, it uses it efficiently, but that engine will always be on at some point. Plus the Volt is way more fun to drive than the Prius, which is very boring and sluggish by comparison. Sure, not everyone wants a super fast car, but most people probably don't want to get run over either when merging onto a busy freeway either.

Personally where I live, gas is currently $2.50 per gallon and electric is 1 cent during off-peak and 6 cent on-peak per kWh! Also normally gas and electric rates scale equally (if gas is higher, so is electric, and vice versa).

Blue Bird, I get far better mileage than that, and only plug the car in when I get home....it's not so hard....only takes seconds to plug that puppy in, and it can charge in 2 1/4 hours. There's no "dealing" with the battery, as they're highly reliable. There are a bunch of these things out there, with 3-400,000 miles on them, and no trouble. I have heard, however, of prius and leaf cars with battery trouble.

+skirmich You're thinking of a Toyota Prius. In which case yes, your description is accurate. However, it's not true for the Volt. Go test drive one, even a Gen 1. Make sure it's got some battery charge in it. If the dealer didn't bother to plug it in, let it run in "mountain mode" for a few minutes so the engine will recharge the battery a little. Then put it in "Sport" mode, and if you're the first car at a stoplight, as soon as it turns green, press down on the gas all the way. I'll bet you won't think it's such a sluggish car afterwards.

Ashelm56 I know how fast Electrics can be as my Parents have a Tesla S (Save the world and shit motivation) but this Volt 0 to 60 times are not impressive by a long shot.. Best I've seen online is 7.8 and worse 9.1 which is kinda odd and Inconsistent. I own currently 2 cars (Not counting Wifeys bimmer) that wont do 0 to 60 in more than 6.1 seconds and my high 0 to 60 comes from an CUV. My Sedan is 4.8s so yeah I will think the Volt is a Sluggish car were it cant compete with a 4500lb CUV. But again like I said I know the Volt is designed for PURE MPG performance... My SUV MPGs is 17c-25h so its a world of difference in consumption.

+skirmich Have you driven electric cars? Most of the time they're a lot more fun to drive than their gasoline counterparts. Better torque and if it's a pure EV (like the i3 or Tesla) it's definitely more exciting. You don't have to deal with gear shifting or the "jolts" that comes with it. It's feels like a roller coaster taking off, smooth and fast. Unless your idea of "fun" is hearing the engine rev and seeing the plume of gas coming out... In that case then fuck you (seriously), those people are fucking douche bags. Back in the day I can understand a loud engine and plume of gas signifying speed, but these days sound and smoke means nothing anymore. Stop waking up the neighbors and making the streets smell like shit and get a damn Tesla! For example earlier today there was a guy in a truck next to me at a red light. Light turned green and his truck sounded as loud as a fucking jet engine with literally black smoke coming out of his exhaust. He SOUNDED fast. I tapped my accelerator and overtook him in complete silence. All I can think about is what he's trying to compensate...

Those people who buy it new probably would've bought a $30k+ car anyways, so why not the Volt instead and get a much better driving experience? P.S. I own a Volt (bought used) and I don't think I can ever go back to gas again. The electric drive alone is the reason all my future cars will be EV or plug-in of some sort.

Oops. The Dec . 2016 Consumer Reports just rated the 2016 Chevy Volt reliability at a miserable 15. (At least they beat the Tesla model X (12), but this is bottom of the barrel quality. The batteries have been OK, but so much for the idea that the Volt is to be bought because GM made THIS car with quality. Looks like it's the Prius Prime, or wait for the PHEV's to continue to improve, IMO.

But how often do you use that full range? The normal person commuting to and from their job isn't going to exceed the electric range of the vehicle so it makes no sense to carry around the extra weight of the fuel. So they put in a smaller tank. And by the way 400 miles of range at 70 MPH is just under 6 hours of nonstop driving. You can't tell me that's not enough for you.

Ours is charged for free at work, since March 2019, unless you go other places, the total amount in almost a year on gas is $25.00. Plus the incentives made the car super cheap.

42 mpg is not impressive ,diesels gets way better mpg even 4x4 his trip computer shows 38 mpg which is terrible for any modern 2016 vehicle

+SuperNiceguy60 Yeah, but can you fuel a diesel in your garage? And the low mpg is probably because they were driving it a lot on gas rather than electric for their short review session. Ask a long term Volt owner what kind of mpg they get, and most will probably tell you they haven't visited a gas station in weeks, if not months.

Long response ahead, so apologies in advance: To use myself as an example, I bought my fully loaded (heated leather seats, Bose/Navigation, safety packages 1 & 2) 2014 Volt used for $20k, so I'm already saving a lot of money on gas. And it's way more fun to drive than say, a Corolla, Civic, or the Prius I used to drive. My electric bill went up about $35 a month, in case you want a cost comparison. Yes, it's actually costing me more to drive electric right now vs the Prius, which at $1.50 would cost me $30 to fill up twice a month at 10 gallons per fill up. But the Volt is way more fun to drive and quieter on the freeway. Plus gas prices won't stay this "low" indefinitely. Sooner or later it'll go back up, unless OPEC nations are okay with losing a lot of money. Someone going to a Volt from say, a 15-20 mpg car and spent $50+ a week on gas will see much more savings than me. The first 45k miles of scheduled maintenance on the Volt every 7500 miles consists of tire rotations and checking the car's systems. No one has had to replace the Volt's battery out of warranty yet (8 years/100k, or 10 years/150k in CARB states), but it's estimated to be around $3-4k, or about the same cost as replacing an automatic transmission in a gas car. It is not $10k-$20k, or whatever you heard on the internet. GM babied the heck out of the battery specifically because they were worried about what would happen if a lot of them went bad in a short time. Thankfully that paid off, unlike say Nissan with the Leaf in hot climates, though it's because the Leaf used air-cooling rather than liquid cooling that the Volt uses. As of this post, Erick Belmer has driven nearly 300,000 miles in his 2012 Volt, of which over 100,000 of it was on electric. Other than the front wheel bearings (probably because of potholes as he lives in Ohio), he hasn't had any issues with his Volt, nor has he seen any range loss. Google "sparkie volt" and look at his stats on voltstats if you don't believe me. Keep in mind the Volt was also designed to do most people's daily work commute on electric, while giving them a gas engine backup in case they need to drive somewhere further away or can't plug in for whatever reason. But as I just showed with Erick's Volt, it can work for anyone who wants a good commuter car. Will it work for everyone? Of course not, such as people who live in apartments or don't own a garage. But they're not as bad as some people are making them out to be.
