Just purchased a 2017 Touring L plus in June with 75k miles. She was my first pick to haul my grandsons around for a number of reasons and wanted a reliable vehicle. Been to the shop 3 times since with what we thought were transmission problems, haven't found one, yet. Going to try this the minute we bring her home for the 3rd time tomorrow morning! I'm very hopeful that this will address the problem. Sad that this problem (non-problem) wasn't disclosed at the time of purchase, since this seems to be a problem that many owners are having. Yes! thank you so much for this video. I am over 100k miles now in my 2015 Chrysler 200, and felt my shifting getting really harsh recently. I took it through an automatic wash and while it was rolling, I shifted from neutral to drive. when I turned the car off to vacuum, I was shocked and surprised to have my dashboard light up like a Christmas tree. Check light engine turned on with "CAN C BUS connection failure" and Transmission service Required error. My car was stuck in 4th gear until I turned it off for a few minutes. Once turned on again only the Check engine light was on, and would not shift out of 4th gear. I completed this step you have provided and all is working again. Check light turned off, and car is now shifting even smoother than before. I was about to take this car into service. I will keep an eye on it to see if the issues return, as I know I am over 100k miles and working on those maintenance steps already. Thank you so much again!

I’ve just tried this for a second time, first time didn’t seem to make a difference. We have a 17 Pacifica limited and the shifting isn’t awful yet, but it isn’t smooth. This issue started just under 30k miles, we are the original owners. So disappointed in this van. We’ve replaced both batteries too around 18k miles for almost 1k. I’m so tired of this stuff. I appreciate you working out a solution, it’s clear that Chrysler doesn’t care.
@TheLawnEngineer Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately batteries don’t last based on miles, it’s more time based. Automotive batteries are not made to the same specifications they use to, most of them don’t last no matter the auto manufacturer. The transmission tuning is 100% on Chrysler, they should recall these vehicles.

Great video. I wasn't aware of the adaptive shifting programming. I actually had brought this into a dealership for a brake line issue and explained the transmission issue and they weren't able to reproduce anything and weren't aware of any issues. My wife and I often alternate which vehicles we drive, I wonder if that makes the algorithm get even more messed up due to the inconsistent driving styles.
@TheLawnEngineer Жыл бұрын
Yes, switching drivers can make the shifting worse more quickly. Obviously, the programming/hardware isn't very good if this happens...most every vehicle is driven by more than one person. Anyway, this reset should help you mitigate the poor shifting. Thanks for checking in!

@@TheLawnEngineer I feel like Chrysler won't do a recall until this issue causes a catastrophic failure to the transmission and an accident/injury/death. Until now, I don't think it has, so Chrysler has gotten away with just TSBs for the transmission. We have a 2018 and have had this issue for a while. Just recently it threw a trans warning and check engine so I disconnected the battery and the trans warning went away but still had the check engine. Do you think the adaptiv would get so bad to throw a trans warning? and does disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes do the same as your fix? Any help is appreciated.

Sorry you are having trans issues. The adaptive transmission will start shifting so bad it will throw a trans warning. Others have commented about the trans warning light and this reset making the light go out.

Thanks for sharing I've experienced the same exact hard shifting issues. Dealership charged me to "update" the transmission software but the problem comes back again after a while. I will be trying this. Do you know if a new transmission control module (or aftermarket) is available that would fix this issue permanently? Instead of having to often reset the transmission?

I don't know of any replacement control that would get rid of this problem. I've thought about buying a replacement to test; however, I haven't wanted to spend the money and still have to do the reset. I talked to a local dealer about replacement and they didn't know if it would help or not.

I’ve tried this reset numerous times even as recent as yesterday and it still did the same hard shift/ slam at 14mph again today. Anything else you would try and recommend here? Thanks in advance and love your channel!!!

Unfortunately the 14mph clunk will not go away, that was always present for me too. Because there are 9 gears I believe this is the 4-5 shift that engages the dog clutch. You can do some searching and find more information on forums. It will get worse over time and this reset brings it down but haven’t found anyone who was able to eliminate it.

@@TheLawnEngineer ok thanks for this info! As unfortunate as it is, I guess if it not harming the transmission like you mentioned in your videos and it just an unfortunate quirk of the transmission, It is what it is. I’m sure Chrysler won’t cover it with the powertrain warranty if they all do this at some point. I have 60k miles and should probably do a trans fluid drain and fill soon anyway, but I doubt it will help this condition.

I am currently deep into a problem with an older Chrysler transmission that is exhibiting the same problems. Bump stop, harsh 1 to 2 shift, harsh downshift. Rebuilt the transmission and the trans has the exact same problems. My assessment is that the problem is not mechanical but electronic. Trans is a 41-TE 4 speed but uses a similar shifting method, an electronic box or module. I tried the manual reset that you and another site mentioned several times w/ no noticeable change. Seems that they connected a well engineered transmission to a feeble electronic box that is crammed full of half baked ideas. Currently waiting on a refurbished ECU to see if that helps. They are calling the PCM a power train control module when it is actually an ECM that passes information to & from a TCM (transmission control module). On newer models they are right next to each other but on older cars they were on opposite sides of the vehicle (OBD-1).
@TheLawnEngineer2 жыл бұрын
The good news is that I have heard accounts of a new/refurbed ECU solving problems like you are experiencing. However, it really is disappointed when such a major problem is caused by poor electronics.
@larryhutchens75932 жыл бұрын
@@TheLawnEngineer Agree. I rebuilt the A604 myself, not the first trans rebuild but my first 4 speed OD FWD unit. The trans is really neat the way it works. Some great engineering went into it. The A604 is internally identical to the 41TE which is the trans that is in my 2002 Chrysler Voyager mini van. That trans has never given me a moments trouble. I used the trans repair section of the FSM for the van to overhaul the A604. The car companies designed the old OBD-1 systems in such a way that only the individual manufacturer could access the computer system. Each make had their own design data plug. Ford had theirs, GM had theirs, Chrysler theirs, foreign cars theirs & so on. And on my little 93 LeBaron? It has 2 data access connectors, one under the hood and one under the dash & the plugs are different.The under hood one only accesses engine codes while the under dash one will access trans data.I tried a code scanner from O'Reilley's that had all the OBD-1 access plugs but it only had the under hood one and guess which one accesses the trans data? Very frustrating. Currently awaiting a refurbished ECM to try.
@TheLawnEngineer2 жыл бұрын
@@larryhutchens7593 that is a very frustrating situation. It’s amazing that the electronics actually simplified over time or at least became more standardized. I believe Tesla has even pushed things ahead further by having a single computer. Even the elimination of most buttons has driven all user inputs to the touch screen. Af first it seems more complicated but it actually cleans up the I/o and wiring of the vehicle.

I am not wealthy by any means, but I have an aging 100 lb dog (the love of my life) who can't jump in and out of my regular car anymore, so I need something low to the ground that's easy for him to get in and out of, and a minivan is the only thing I know of like that. We have a 100+ lb dog also. We Love the Sto-N-Go seats for the middle row captain’s chairs. We leave one down for our dog, and usually have his big dog bed there. It’s great for trips, as he can lay down, sit up, or even get to the back seat if he wants. When we get where we’re going, we can then pop the seats up and we can all ride together with family. Just a great feature that no other van has. Our last Honda van required the heavy seats to be removed, and the floor wasn’t flat and smooth underneath (latches sticking up). We left them in the garage, which took up space. Then, when we got to our destination, we didn’t have seats for family to ride with us. So, IMHO, the seats are a great selling point unmatched by others. Worth it!

Rarely happens since that change. Downside is ethynol free gas can run 60 cents a gallon more. But I will try this if the issue becomes more common.

@TheLawnEngineer2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately there is no noise or visual indication that the reset of the transmission control module (TCM) was initiated. As long as you are cycling the ignition to "off" before releasing the gas pedal you should be good. Also note, that this procedure clears the adaptions the TCM has made to return to the initial tuning, it will not clear all trouble codes. You will need a scan tool to clear the rouble codes. If you reset the TCM every couple of weeks you should be able to prevent the code from reappearing.
