( www.TFLtruck.com ) How does the 2017 Honda Ridgeline handle an extreme fully-loaded Super Ike Gauntlet towing review? We loaded the truck with a 4,800 lbs trailer, Nathan, and Andre and went to the top of the Rocky Mountains on I-70.

The fact that so many people feel negatively about the Ridgeline is part of the reason why I'll buy one. Not everyone in this world wants to follow the crowd and buy a 60 Thousand dollar Platinum or Denali. I just would like a well equipped, capable vehicle that meets all my needs. And that is reliable with good resale. The Ridgeline checks all the boxes for me and my family.

youngblood23rb ya it's a good truck for people like you (no trying to be rude) but when it comes to me I have two kids a 49 foot boat not to mention about 16 other trailers so I need a 60 thousand dollar truck. But yes, you have a valid point not everyone needs a huge truck so I believe that's what that truck is build for.

@@cxjoker9515 It sounds like you are bashing this thing because you are a former employee. I'm not a Honda 'fan boy' and I haven't even owned a Honda yet but I'm seriously considering replacing my full size truck with the Ridgeline because my lifestyle and needs have changed. I'm going to assume that Honda does have some issues as indicated by the garage doors installed on their buildings but I seriously doubt that they are as problematic as a domestic vehicle. Overpriced for what you get, absolutely. More problematic than others, I highly doubt it. Elaborate. Is it build quality, mechanical, electrical, structural?

Finally, a refreshingly positive review of the Ridgeline by the TFL guys. From the previous videos by Roman, he could not hide how much he hated it because it didn't fit most people's definition of a pickup truck down to the T.

This Honda is seriously being misunderstood. It's not a work truck, it's not meant to tow heavy loads like the Silverado, Ram, or F-150. It's a recreational truck meant to tow a pair of Jetskis, a small boat, some ATVs or a pair of motorcycles.

Well Roman, for the man who sneered and giggled and half-heartedly laughed that this is not a "truck". What do you have to say now Mr expert? This was an extremely impressive display for something that is not a truck. Let's be honest 90% of the trucks we see on the road today do not haul anything but groceries. Features, fuel economy and performance, hands down, this truck and yes I do mean TRUCK, appears to be one of the best values being produced today.

for some reason, I've yet to see a Ridgeline on ANY job site here in the Bakken in North Dakota, not even for just a people hauler. Full size Fords, GM's and Dodge's (Rams) galore (both 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton) but never a FWD based Honda.
@djayt1215
@djayt1215 7 жыл бұрын
Well of course the tow rating is lower, its not a 1/2 ton, and you will likely never see anything but domestics on work sites, the Government only buys from the domestics, and domestics provide huge incentives for fleets to businesses. Purchases aren't purely based on the best, they're based usually on economy. For example, you don't see many wranglers throughout the rest of the world, that doesn't mean the wrangler is a bad off roader.

This video was very helpful. I've been test driving trucks the last 2 months, looking for the right fit. Originally I looked at just mid-size, with the new Ridgeline the clear winner. The Tacoma looks "cooler", but it has a narrower, shorter bed (but a couple inches deeper) than the ridgeline, and has a lower weight capacity. I don't tow anything, so Tacoma's bigger towing capacity wasn't as relevant to me as hauling capacity. Inside the cab, the Tacoma is cramped, both front seat and back. Tech wise, the Ridgeline has a lot more bang for the buck. Reliability-wise, Honda has proven itself to me with several vehicles. Toyota was the gold standard at one time, but Honda's reliability is at least as good. The biggest issue I have with the Ridgeline is ground clearance. I don't go off-roading but I do take some dirt roads regularly. That's why I'm looking at the F-150 xlt and lariat as well. It's a beautiful truck, but it's reliability is unknown to me and it's interior fit and finish inside the cab is sub-par compared to what I see in the Ridgeline. I still haven't decided..... On a side note it was disappointing to see so many juvenile comments on this thread, interspersed with legitimate input. "Real men" don't talk about women that way, even in 2016, and some of the homoerotic obsessions a few of you here have goes a long way to explain the driving habits of some of you whom I'm sure I've seen on the road myself. Keep it polite and civil. Even if you think you are anonymous. It's not hard. Really.

its hard to make the claim that it did so well. you cant compare it to anything. it has a low tow rating, so doing well while only towing 4,800# doesn't really mean much. basically this video in my opinion is only useful for consumers who tow very very little and when they do tow they know they arent ever going to exceed right around 5000# assuming it can obviously tow slightly above the limit, as most vehicles can. so if u know exactly what you will be towing with your vehicle and this thing attracts you then yes its a good truck for that one scenario but other than that its really not that awesome. Did you guys see the off road video with the honda. its transmission over heated and the truck lit up the screen telling them to shut it down. now assuming they were going low speeds and the honda was shifting in and out of gears constantly creating excess transmission heat this probably doesnt mean much to alot of people. but im curious if towing a trailer in a very hot demanding climate would have the same effect on the honda. i would imagine that because of the altitude of the continental divide its probably not necessarily that hot.. i would personally like to see this same test done in 100+ degree heat to be sure the transmission doesn't have the overheating problem it had while off road.

This is not a truck to have on the farm or ranch, necessarily. It's for hauling a few sacs of concrete, dry wall or plywood from Home Depot on the weekend and driving to the office during the week. I think you'd tear it up hauling sacs of concrete or hay bales every day.

@brdn-official
@brdn-official 7 жыл бұрын
+Eric Franklin give it time. Only reason why people are trash talking it is because Honda made it. You gotta admit, Honda isn't really the truck making type. However they did do a good job with adding new features into a pickup non others have. I, and I think a lot of others, consider the Ridgeline a city truck. Yeah it can tow and haul but it's not meant to be used for anything serious.
@Dinty51
@Dinty51 7 жыл бұрын
+Eric Franklin yes it is maxed out, BUT remember that the max on this honda is lower than the other trucks it competes with. The Tacoma has similar power and transmission and has a higher max tow rating. So therefore, you have to admit that it is less capable.

Because body-on-frame is what makes it a truck. This isn't a body-on-frame, it isn't a "crossover", it's their Odyssey minivan with the back cut out. Not a truck. Just because it has a bed doesn't make it a truck. The El Camino wasn't a truck. The Ranchero wasn't a truck. The Bronco, old Explorer, Suburban, Blazer, Wagoneer, F-Series, Silverado, Ram, Econoline, ect... Those were trucks.

THANK YOU for this. This is one review I've been waiting a while for, since the Titan XD and Canyon Diesel vids. Great test, very interesting results, I'm a more informed viewer. Keep it up everyone! That said, the RL's performance is surprisingly good. I think this will make a lot of buyers take notice, and this demonstration tells me that the RL has a bit left in the tank, so to speak. Honda is smart, then, to keep the tow/payload ratings reigned in and stand on the overall product's merits, which seem to me to be plenty solid now that the RL is out and it's being compared to the Tacoma and GM twins. Between the Taco and RL I think I might pick the RL for its drive train and on-road manners, plus that storage trunk in the bed. I've also heard and felt for myself how ponderous and sluggish the Taco drives for not being an actual full-size truck. I think the GM twins are a better comparison since they split the diff between Honda and Toyota; they are jack-of-all-trades trucks, literally. I would side with Honda on the interior, but with the GMs in terms of overall utility and feature set.

Nope you totally need a 3/4 ton for 4300#. The people on forums astound me. I mean yeah it's nice to have a bigger truck for safety and longevity of the tow vehicle, but too many people forget just how little they actually tow throughout the year. I'm perfectly content with my 1/2 ton and have towed 10,000 which I never should've realistically done, but it was for 5 miles and I took it nice and slow. I'm not gonna buy a 3/4 dually diesel just "in case".

I just started the hunt for a new or certified used midsize. I have no need for a full size...I tow a very small boat and I want to tow a bit heavier hard side pop-up...this could do all that with a ton of great safety and engineering options...I've had a Colorado and a Ranger. I just dont think I can afford a ridgeline

Ok, if y'all want to call it a "crossover", so be it. It's a crossover between an SUV and a truck, TUV if you want. If I lived in a rural area and I plan on going off road and needed to tow more than my ski boat, I would buy a Tacoma, but I don't. This Ridgeline suits my needs perfectly. What suits me, may not suit the next person (period).

SeanJ there is nothing wrong with the 09 Colorado! I travel with a friend, who has a rwd 09 Colorado Crew Cab LT with the 3.9 5 cyl engine. He tows a 5,100 lbs travel trailer with ease! I have a one year old Colorado Z71,4x4, V6 Ext Cab, with a 4,000 travel trailer that is all we need, in truck and trailer. On a couple of trips from Mass. to The Smoky Mountains, the both of us have had no problems at all! Sure that is not the Ike Gauntlet, but some of the roads with good size hills we drive on are actually more challenging than the Ike, just because they are not straight like the Ike, but very curvy, that makes it difficult to maintain speed! Take Rt 441 that goes from N.C. to Gatlinburg to see what I mean!

@RyanKiefer

+Daniel Bell I think what you meant to say is "it's cheaper to make a solid rear axle with a high load rating." There's no engineering reason you can't build a high-capacity IRS, but it is more complex and expensive. Look under the back end of an MRAP and tell me again that IRS is only for light duty. Also, has everyone forgotten about all of the IRS suvs that have much higher tow ratings than the Ridgeline? Nissan Armada - 8500, Ford Expedition - 9200, VW Touareg - 7700, Dodge Durango - 7400, Land Rover Discovery - 7700... there are others, but I think I've made my point.

Per Honda, if D4 does not provide enough transmission braking, you should put it in "L;" that's what it's there for (it keeps the shifts between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd). Did you try that?
@andreasm2882
@andreasm2882 7 жыл бұрын
I put my RL ounce in L when I was going 45-50 and downhill and I wanted it to brake more on its own but I quickly realized it was a mistake. Now I only put it in l it is very steep and I am not going above 35. So I am assuming the guys were going at least 55 downhill and I now that is to fast to have it in L but they also should have always kept it in D4 going downhill because then the truck will not shift to 5 & 6 as it did with them.
@teknightrider2586
@teknightrider2586 7 жыл бұрын
Actually a person should be fine in L at high speeds...as the Owner's Guide and Owner's Manual States... - L - Stronger Engine Power & Braking when Driving in Hilly Terrain. - Automatically Changes Gears between 1st and 5th. - (5th gear is only used at higher speeds) And it will hit the 112 MPH Governor in 5th...3rd Gear would go up to 83 MPH.

I pulled a 24' Tritoon weighing around 4,600lbs, plus my dad, plus our gear up from Dallas to Mid Missouri with a Gen1 ridgeline this January. The boat was absolutely huge.. the trailer is about 32' long total. Kept the speeds around 55-65mph (occasionally reached near 70mph down some longer hills..) but it did it.. a "not-a-real-truck" pulled a big boat 530 miles. Amazingly, no trailer sway at all (with no weight distribution hitch either (per manufacturer recommendations to NOT use them)). 2006 with 188k miles on the odometer. Hondas are real trucks people. Also, I'd love to see a full-size V8 Honda so Honda NA please make it!!!!

Honda does this often, and has for years. Over-engineers and under-rates. One good example is the power of the "earth dreams" direct injection 3.5L V6. When it's been dyno'd in the Accord, it made its Honda-quoted HP at the wheels. Factoring in drivetrain losses, the engine in the Ridgeline is actually probably making somethink like 310-315hp. Look at the acceleration numbers laid down by the same engine in the Pilot, too. That thing is knocking on the door of the high 5's for 0-60 in the AWD model. 280hp my ass.
@dundonrl
@dundonrl 7 жыл бұрын
