The 2017 design always catches me off guard. I don't realize how handsome it is until night when its body lines are shown. The front end is a masterpiece and has a very agressive stance. Good proportions for a compact sedan.

I just got a 2017 SE, for less than $11,000. Reliability and value were my main reasons for choosing Hyundai. Very impressed with it, very nice to drive and averaging 40 miles per gallon.

@Derrick2250 well to make a long story short I traded in my 02 Chevy cause it was no longer worth fixing and I went to this used dealer and I got a basic edition without touch screen. Its not fully loaded. I was rushing cause I no longer wanted to insure my Chevy.

I'm posting as someone who bought the Elantra Ultimate over any of the competitors. Please keep in mind I test drove the following competitors: Civic, Cruze, 3, Impreza, Corolla. I generally test drove the top trim models, since I was leaning towards a reliable daily driver. Elantra pros: -Good option packages for a fair price (wasn't the cheapest or most expensive) -There's a few options not available on competitor cars (memory seats? Did not expect that) -Looks good in a conservative way (I'm not trying to turn heads in a compact car) -Roomy...incredibly roomy. -Decent gas mileage -Soft, mostly compliant ride -Great interior design, simple and not overdone (I love the standard placement of the Navi screen, doesn't look like some tacked on iPad). -Handsome wheels (Civic touring wheels made me sadface) -Big discounts from dealers Elantra cons: -Decent power under 4k, struggles pretty mightly above that - I can forgive, this is a daily driver -Hard plastic interior...too much of it -Jekyll and Hyde ride quality - Very smooth on decent roads, and terribly harsh with big bumps Evaluation of other cars Civic - Great car, better driving dynamics than my Elantra. However, this isn't my weekend car. This car is for driving to work 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes a day. Loved the LED lights, but could do without them. I actually like the design, but I feel it draws a bit too much attention, it's polarizing for sure. Interior - what a mess. I like simple and easy interiors in cheap compacts. I wish Honda would stop overdesigning these interiors. Probably my biggest reason I did not get the Civic. Oh, and dealers are not wiling to discount very much on Civic Tourings compared to Elantra Limiteds...period. I got about 4k off my Elantra, so that's what essentially sealed the deal. But I understand that Honda doesn't need help selling Civics, so I'm okay with that. Still a great car though, would have picked the Civic with the same discount. Mazda 3 - I loved this car...well at least the interior and driving dynamics. I used to have a Mazdaspeed 3, so it brought back some memories. Interior is nice, but I still hate that ugly tacked on Navi screen thing. Better materials than both Civic and Elantra inside. Outside, that's where I think Mazda missed the mark. These cars are a bit too ugly for me, and I loved my 5 door MS3. Drives like a sports car though. But again, not what I was looking for. Cruze - Good, but I just hate GM's interior designs. I mean, the Civic's was just overdone, but the Cruze interior just oozed cheap GM interior feelings, man. I also did not like the exterior design. The previous generations of Cruzes were better, now they just look like Volt copies.

Bro!!! I just bought a Chevy Cruze 2017 Diesel. The interior is far nicer and better than the stupid TDI I had before that. I had the MK6 TDI and talk about cheap interior. And it wasn't even the base model. It was a highline with leather interior and the fucking car felt like a cheap ass Corolla. Got into an accident, so I went to check out that new Cruze Diesel and it's much better than what VW did. Had Many TDI Jetta before and they had very nice and comfortable interiors. The only good thing about German cars is how they handle on highways. Obviously they are designed for Autobahn use, but other than that. Very disappointing.

Iris Kearney I really like it. Very comfortable and relaxing. Best bang for the buck. I test drove all other cars in the segment, and to be honest I love the Mazda 3 but It can be 6 to 8k more expensive than the Elantra with the same equipment level. If you have 25k to spend for a fully loaded civic or mazda3, why not consider a used 3 series or Lexus IS.

Here is where the Elantra is better: NO CVT for an automatic. I hate those CVTs, they have almost zero acceleration from a stop. No direct injection (on the base model) = no carbon deposit problems on your intake valves 3 years later. Instead they use the old port injection that scrubs the intake valves clean. Some cars like the Lexus IS250 are having to have their engines replaced because of that problem = $8,000 cost ! (avoid the eco Elantra model, it has direct injection).

My experience with an Elantra of this generation spans all of two weeks, not even consecutively. Before you think I hated the car, nope...two separate rentals. One was with the family, the other was a solo trip, but in both cases the Elantra proved to be a decent little car. It was roomy enough for two adults, two teenage kids, a small dog and a bunch of our stuff, but I don't think the kids would have wanted to do more than a couple of hours at a time in the backseat. When my mom came onboard for a few little errands or to go out to a local restaurant, the Elantra was definitely feeling a bit tight with five of us! Still, I liked the car. Yes, yes the steering was numb, but it was also easy to drive and the car exuded confidence on some twisty two lane roads I drove on in North Carolina. Power was acceptable; people don't buy Elantras (or Civics or Corollas in this price range) for raw speed, but I found it more than acceptable. (Twenty years ago, this type of performance in smallish car would have been a revelation!) Overall, I liked the comfort, ride and features, as well as the pleasing dashboard layout. I could get used to the hard plastics mentioned because besides the doors, they were mostly in places where I would seldom touch, and again this would generally be a common theme in any sub-$20k vehicle. While both my Elantras were mid-level rentals, they were more than good enough for what I needed, and not just as a rental. By no means was the car exciting but it was hardly dull or laborious to live with. There was enough here that I would not hesitate to put these cars on my shopping list if I was looking for a smaller, inexpensive family car. And to think, as I write this in March 2020, there is already a brand new Elantra on deck, which will no doubt address some of the shortcomings discussed about on the previous generation.

I got my Elantra 2017 two years ago and love it.Up where I live in Canada our winters are very cold but no problem with the battery. The heated steering wheel and heated seats are a big plus.Compared to my 2013 Elantra the 2017 is a much stiffer ride due to more steel in construction.I think that Hyundai gives you much more car for your money.

I have a 2017 Elantra SE, I've owned it about 6 months. It's a very good car. Excellent MPG's, very roomy inside for a big guy like me, and it's still very fun to drive. I would recommend anybody shopping for a car like this really needs to drive one, it has many advantages over a Nissan or Mazda, and is less expensive. And it still has all the perks of a reliable Honda or Toyota.

I bought one of these used for 2 years and sold it to get a CX-5. Love my Mazda but this car was absolutely solid. Outside of a door handle recall that was fixed under warranty, a squeaky motor mount that was fixed with a $5 bottle of silicone spray, and a new battery. I put 35k miles on it with no issues outside of the minor things I had to do. The tech was great and definitely something that took some getting used to in the Mazda with its simplicity. I had the ultimate package which added the adaptive cruise and automatic lane centering and it pretty much drove itself. Was awesome on long trips when I could take my hands off the wheel and open a bottle or clean my glasses and the car would drive and steer itself. I think it looks way better than the current generation.

Crunchbite that's a good deal. The mark on the sonata I bought was 23205 and I got it for 19810 so they took off almost 3500 and it came with the tech package that has xm radio and apple car play and stuff. The civic was going for 19404 and they were not budgeing so for 400 dollars more I got a full size car and free oil changes is a big discount in the long run.

this car is definitely comfortable. my step father traded his 2015 wrx for this (i know i was scratching my head too) and let me drive it. it is incredibly comfortable. but. i personally drive a 2004 hyundai elantra gt. the steering on that is the most communicative steering i have ever felt. i feel every single bump , loss of traction, and change in road surface clear as day. i got in this and while it was smooth as hell. there was absolutely zero feedback.which meant i had to focus more on steering than i usually do. good car.just dont expect anything sporty.

Reviews like these are one of the reasons why cars keep getting bigger, and bloated. If you obviously find the rear leg and head room too small, buy the bigger model -- like the Sonata!!! Quit complaining about size/space issues on what "used" to be a compact thanks to you. That's exactly why larger models exist! The new Civic for example is so bloated it's the size of a 2003 Honda Accord.

Many years ago, my first car was a Sentra 2001. That was a truly compact car. I really liked it and when it came time to upgrade, I was annoyingly surprised at how "fat" the newer sentras were. I just didnt like them. Everything that won me over from the 2001 was gone.

I appreciate that cars of all categories can comfortably seat people on the front and rear seats at the same time. Gone are the days when compact cars had people be seated uncomfortably. Just like flying economy class, the budget flyers also need decent legroom unlike the cramped seats they get. Even those who cannot afford a bigger car deserve to travel in comfort.

Just bought the 2018 Elantra SE Manual Transmission this past week. Mine came from the South Korea Plant as apposed to the Alabama Plant...It's a base model. 2.0 MPI fuel injected engine. I really like this car. Rides great, driver seat is comfortable and snug. A/C is cold and the engine is real quite. I'm getting 41 mpg right now. I can't believe I won't need to fill this thing until after 450-480 miles? Don't know yet. still on first full tank of gas. If you "baby" the gas pedal, you get great mileage. It's just a nice car with a nice warranty. The rebate was fantastic....if still on, $2500.

Off all the Compacts right now, The Elantra and Jetta are the two most serious challengers to the Mazda 3 and Civic. The Elantra's cousin Kia Forte is right there with them. The Mazda3 and VW Jetta are due for a refresh or a redesign soon. Let's see what happens after that. The new 2017 Subaru Impreza will surprise a lot of people.

The problem is that AC and power features are not included on baseline models a lot of the time, so they are technically options still.

This is the first car I've ever purchased for myself. Have had it for a few years now, I like almost everything about it except for the front pillars - they really negatively affect the visibility for me, compared to other cars I've driven. You get used to it eventually but it's not ideal.

Just a warning to any Canadian viewers, those Korean cars have a maintenance schedule of every 6000km or four months. A lot of your driving is going to be to the dealer.

I got mine 2017 Limited almost 2 years ago. I do almost 41 mpg in the summer and 37 mpg in the winter. I don’t drive much in the city but I live in a hilly rural area so I coast a lot. The only issue is that the screen says I’m making 3 extra miles per gallon than reality and last check up costed me $700 😣

I recently purchased a 2017 Elantra, used but like new. With less than 9K miles. It was tricked out. Basically, you get a lot for your money. We are beating the estimated MPG with 41.5 mpg highway and 38.4 overall. Driving the car is comfortable for my large frame, but I do feel the steering is very light. My big complaint is the passenger side egress. This car does not have the power seat option on the passenger's side. So getting in for me is always a headbanging. But that being said I can easily egress the driver's side with the seat lowered and back without hitting my head. With current gas prices, it is a bargain to drive and the gas we save makes half the payment. I love my Honda Pilot but it has been sitting a lot lately because it is hard on gas, with just under 14 mpg.

I just drove a rental one of these, and the steering was my #1 complaint. We mostly had highway driving (where it didn't matter and the Elantra just sipped fuel), but as soon as I started navigating a parking lot, it felt like a video game. I'd keep it in sport just to get some feedback. But otherwise...yeah, there's a lot to like on the Elantra. The 6-speed auto does have a manual mode (with up and down in the right directions!), the telescoping wheel is really nice to get comfortable, and now that I'm comparing prices, it seems like a solid overall value. Like KBB said, you have a lot of options in this space, but the Elantra is worth considering.

I hate the small windows. I find it particularly hard to get into the rear seats in this Elantra. My 2013 Mazda6 has awesome rear room and large windows even with a coupe like roof slope. I know these are 2 different car categories, but small window design is a bane of modern designs which many manufacturers now follow.
