2017 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 Knock sensor code P1326 Going in Limp mode

It just happened to my 2015 Optima at 93k miles. It went into limp mode and I was able to get it home under reduced power. I plugged in my cheap engine analyzer and got the P1326 code. After seeing numerous other posts about engine failure, I knew it needed to go to the dealer for warranty authorization. I dropped it off at the dealer and they had the engine replaced within 5 days under warranty, no questions, no hassle, no out of pocket. This is a common/known issue with the 2.4 GDI engine. No other issues with the car over 9 years of ownership.

My son's 18 Sonata had knock sensor replaced at dealer , rod bearing test , and software update it runs great now .

Our dealer in Owensboro was so bad about denying engine warranty we sent them across the river in Indiana to a dealer that actually welcomed those jobs.

Very good video. This just happened with my 2015 Sonata, I was driving to the airport, check engine light came on, started flashing, engine performance was reduced, got insurance to tow it to Hyundai. Got car back today after it being with Hyundai for a week, car runs great now but I’ve been seeing in comments issue came back after a week for some, hopefully that won’t be the case for me but I will update in a week or so. Hyundai replaced the knock sensor under the extended warranty for the P1326 code it threw.

@@jonwillfixit Sorry, forgot to update. Haven't encountered the P1326 problem again however, a couple things did happen since getting car back from Hyundai. I was driving home from work, started accelerating up to 55mph and car sputtered, felt like engine had no power or performance. It felt like it wanted to stall, was about to pull over but then I pushed the accelerator down a little bit more and got engine to respond if that makes sense and was able to speed up but before that, car was moving slow. That was about two weeks ago, hasn't happened again since. One week ago, I was in the parking lot at work leaving to go home, put my foot on the brake, pushed the button to start car and it took what felt like a good 3 seconds to start which has never happened before. Usually I push the button, car starts but this one time it just kept making that sound cars make when you go to start it before it finally actually started.

KIA recently replaced the 2.4 engine. I believe the knock sensor code, if it has been flashed, is hearing the bearing failure on the crank. It seems to always be cylinder 3. My engine did not display the CEL but seized while driving on the interstate.

Gave ya thumbs up, not cause it helped too much but for trying as hard as you did. Hopefully the one I'm about to fix won't have all this trouble. I wonder if there is anyway to fool the sensor into thinking everything is ok so you can at least drive the POS into the ground ?

Great investigation. This is a complex common problem, caused by a crappy engine it seems. They blow all too often, I think. The Feds (NTSB) fined Hyundai/Kia 165 million dollars over this issue, for engines blowing , oil on the road, subsequent accidents, fires, drivers being hit after getting out of their vehicles etc. My belief is they turned knock sensor into and early warning sort of system to get engine slowed down and out of high speed lanes, by going into limp mode. A You Tuber former dealer mechanic reports numerous versions of the ECM update over the years trying to get it dialed in. Who knows if your vehicle has the latest update. My 2012 Sonata coded , when I was in a double roundabout at too high a speed with a very low fuel tank. Since the car has a direct injection fuel pump (sprays fuel directly into cylinder at high pressure, ) not in front of intact valve. I believe the knock sensor "heard " the pump running dry, for a moment. It occured again in next roundabout and again on a incline out of the roundabout exit. I saw 3 codes of P1326, 1 permanent and 2 pending. I added gas and cleared the 2 pending codes with my $50 scan tool. Car ran fine. Could not clear the permanent code. I was at Hyundai looking at a new car and was talking to the service manager. He mentioned clearing code while engine was running. This is averse to my experience. However it worked. Hope this helps

I've been dealing with this knock sensor issue with hyundai for sometime, check engine light flashing came on, took it to the dealer twice they changed removed the code car ran fine a week later it came back on doing the same thing. I believe it's a security measure needing to be updated on these vehicles that's a 2017 I have a 15 and all the hyundai and kia's are NOW problematic for whatever reason.

I understand your frustration, my customer took this car to the dealership & they said nothing was wrong with it This is a common issue, I believe the engine is detecting a slight knocking sound causing the issue, im not 100% sure

@hometownautorepair3121 after the dealership removed the code the car ran fine. But now I believe it's a wiring issue that wasn't addressed. It's a code as well as a security update that had to be done.

My 2017 Sonata, limp mode just came on this Monday morning, going down the Interstate. Dealership replaced the sensor in August, so this would be the second time. Edit: I made an appointment, but I was able to reset it without it coming back on.

Hyundai put out an extended warranty for this issue, look into it, they are are replacing engines for this issue

@@jonwillfixit They replace the engine if it fails the Bearing Clearance test. Unfortunately/fortunately mine passed in August.

@@jonathanwinn5265 Yes, I cleared the code with a $10 reader and ran fine. But I think if I run it to hard it will come back. The first time it happened it was a bad sensor and wouldn’t let me reset the code.

Is the oil low??? I had the exact same problem with my 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe sport going into limp mode. The dealer tested the rod clearance and the car supposedly passed, then they did the oil combustion test, and my oil was very low after 1000 miles of driving, now Hyundai good will approved the dealer to steam clean the intake and combustion area to clean all the gunk, which could be causing my low oil consumption. The dealer told me that since my knock sensor is fine, and that the rod bearings are fine, they say my vehicle went into limp mode because my vehicle was low on oil. I told them it would be nice if my Hyundai had a low oil light that would come on to alert me that my oil is low, instead of me having to check my oil every week, which is not normal. They said the car has a low oil Pressure light, but no Low oil light...which is very odd to me. So, my vehicle is at the dealership awaiting the steam clean process of the intake manifold area (intake valves and combustion) to be cleaned. If they clean all the sludge and my vehicle still has a low oil level after 1000 miles, hopefully Hyundai will approve my new engine, if needed. All the problems started at 99,000 miles when the vehicle first went into limp mode and the engine light flashing after I hit a huge puddle in the pouring rain. So naturally, I thought since I hit a puddle that everything got wet under the vehicle and caused the engine light to come on and go into limp mode. After I was stuck on the side of the road, I had to get home safely so I erased the PO1326 code (knock sensor code) and the car went back to normal. After the incident I drove the vehicle for another month or 2 with no problems, then all of a sudden, I was in another rainy day and the car went into limp mode again and the engine light was flashing. I then immediately set up for my Hyundai dealership to look at my vehicle. But when I found out I indeed had an issue the vehicle and set up an appointment for my vehicle to be looked at, I had around 105,000 which is now out of warranty, since I had a 10 year or 100,000 mile warranty. I would hope with the circumstances that Hyundai would honor a new engine, if needed, since the problem started at 99,000 miles. The extra month or 2 of driving brought me over the warranty coverage of. So that's where we stand now, hopefully my story will help someone with a Hyundai with the bad engines or oil consumption problem they have been having for a long time now.

I actually don’t remember if I checked the oil but I definitely like the info you gave me Hopefully Hyundai will honor your warranty but I wouldn’t hold my breath If they don’t put a new engine in it can you give me a 6 month update to see if the low oil was the real cause of the knock sensor code Thanks for watching

If you have a GDI it should be 10 year 120K warranty now due to the class action settlement. Check your VIN, hopefully you'll qualify.

@AlmightyKiz certain Hyundai engines are 120,000 warranty and some are 100,000 warranty the dealer told me

I think my customer did, after this video my customer took it to the dealer & they said it was running fine, the issue with this car is it was so intermittent that the problem only occured like once a week, the customer ended up selling the vehicle, these Hyundais have a bad reputation for the engine crank bearings developing premature crank bearing clearance causing a slight knocking sound, next time i have this issue in my shop ive decided im going to pull the oil pan to get a closer look
