It’s possible but driver visibility is a problem. The stand would have to be much taller and even then it would still be hard to see the car at the further parts of the track

If you ask this question, they are too advanced for you. They are kits comprising various separates of choice. You really need to visit a 'specialist' hobby store and club meeting to understand the full picture. Too much to name here for what you need to construct and run these machines effectively, nevermind car setup knowledge and driving skill needed (they work best when pushed agressively; conditions permitting).

sonicstep well put. 1/8 scale on road has to be THE most expensive r/c car hobby. Be prepared to blow thru you're original budget 2 or 3x over with these cars. I would say you need at least 2k just for the kit and engine and another 1k for electronics MINIMUM

1/8 on-road is basically the “F1” of R/C racing.

you can buy the same cars the "pros" use (unless if they are using prototypes). but do not think that buying a 1K EUR kit and a 1K EUR engine are enough to get you on the podium, you'll have to know about physics and mechanics, just like any other car racing sport. 1/8 RC cars, like the one on video, are known to be the F1 of RC Cars. And indeed, they can get as fast as a F1 car, 0-60mph in less than 2seconds is very common.

So are these drivers racing for the pole position? Does it take a lot to master these cars?

Hi! I used to race for about 20 years, even competed with and against Bruno Coelho and his dad. First off, get to know mechanics: try to learn about 2 stroke engines, how they work and to tune them, and, very important, how to not break them! Secondly, get to know car mechanics: know about suspension geometry, chassis tuning, and every bit and bolts. Third: do not start with 1/8 on-road cars! if you wish to learn, buy a 1/10-200mm on road instead. It may be for hobby only, but buy yourself a Serpent, Mugen or XRay model, and (this is a must) an italian engine like Nova Rossi (or one of its sub-brands). Buying an RTR kit (Ready To Race) is trash money, and you will spend as much or even more in a few months than buying a "competion kit". And then try to spend 2 years(week-ends only) to get to know perfectly how to drive, how to tune your kit and how to master your engine. Success is 80% time spent on the bench tuning the kit, 20% driving. Physics on GT Cars (real cars) is applied the same on RC cars, just differs in scale, size and weight. Engines are another and totally different matter. And do not drive on your neighborhood streets: go to your local track, and learn how to drive! Speeding back and forth on a straight, anyone can. Mastering a corner at high speeds, is another matter! Engine Fuel: 16% nitro maximum (for .12 or .15 engines), 25% max for .21 engines, good brand and good quality (as minimum water as possible, with engine cleaner included). Electronics: avoid any electronics that is not used by "pros". You do not need "top-of-the-top" electronics but good electronics. Futaba, KO, Sanwa used to be good brands. Steering should have a metal gear servo, 6kg force is enough to start for a 1:10-200mm kit. Throttle/Break servo with 4kg is enough for a starters. Best advice from all: go to your local track, talk to the guys that are competing (regional or national championships), preferably the ones that are calm and disciplined, I'm sure they will give you some tips and advises on how and what to buy. The more humble the racer, the best advice he will give you ;) Hope this helps!
