How to change spark plug in Polaris 2017 Sportsman 450 HO. I was able to change spark plug in about 10 minutes. Update 2/22/24: Going in from the right side (removing right panel) is a little faster. Videographer: Sofia S

The hardest part was finding the plug. Thanks for the video. Much appreciated

@@snusmumriken6091 yea. Actually finding another plug was hard as well because Im not a city dweller. No NGK or CHAMPION plug matched so I actually had to go back to a polaris dealership and purchase 4 extra auto⚡lite plugs. Taking it out and replacing it was a sinch

Good vid'.. Thank you. However....I used a 3" straight adapter AFTER struggling with the swivel. That proved to be, maybe, the best option. Thanks again. 👍

I had to change the plug on my 2018 so I'm guessing everything is the same. However, I have to day, I didn't have to dismantle anything. Once I knew where it was ( thanks to this video ), I could easily reach in behind the front ( brake side ) tire and pull the cap off. I even tried the tool that came with the bike and after a little manoevering to find the "sweet spot", I was able to use the tool as well. However, the little 90 degree tool that inserts into the top of the spark plug wrench to turn it is very slight and short so it was difficult to get enough leverage to turn it. My point is, based on what I have just said, a plug can easily be changed on the trail with what you have. In your garage with better tools etc I can certainly see the benefit of removing panels and the like but in my case in the time it would have taken me to do that I had the plug changed. Great video though!

You dont need to go through all that, take off the OTHER panel instead. It basically give you much better access to the plug with no further need to remove anything else. Use a deep 5/8 thin wall socket. You dont even need a extension or swivel, its stil a tight area but much, much better...fyi removing that panel also gives you much better access to the stupidly installed battery terminals. Your welcome.
@ljonesto2 жыл бұрын
Thanks I will give that a try

I assume you mean the panel on the other side?
@johnh95202 жыл бұрын
Yes the right side panel, sooooo much better, you can also access the horrible position of the battery much easier. Good luck

Thanks for the iinfo. I one modification I would do is change the plug from the right side... you won’t have to take the air snorkel off.

Polaris engineers must change everything every year. Probably just cant get it right. My 2016 450 Sportsman spark plug is right on top just below the gas fill cap. I tried a new NGK BKR6E today. LOL, screw base is much larger than the NGK in machine. Back to Adv. Auto tomo!!

Any tips for pulling the wire off? Mine feels like it's welded on..with the limited access my old hands cannot get it to break free from the plug..

Sorry Rick I don’t. Might need to get creative to get some more pull on it. 🤞🏼 Best of luck. Let me know.

@Lou finally got it..used long needle nose pliers right under the square part at top of plug wire..then used the exhaust as leverage point to pry upwards..

Sorry Steve, I am not familiar with that machine. Wish I could be of more help. You can post your question in the Polaris ATV Forum Or even search for it there. Forum is filled with very helpful people. www.polarisatvforums.com/ Or you can just do it and post it to you-tube and there will not be a shortage of comments on how to do it a much easier way 🤣

A better plug would be a NKG (BKR5EIX) it"s an Iridium plug

John W Thanks John. Spark plugs are a bit of a mystery to me. I figure a spark is a spark. But like anything else there is alway better quality out there. Curious to know what makes the NKG plug better? I do use them in all my other ATVs because I always here good things. What type of machine do you have?

@ljonesto6 жыл бұрын
Wilson Aviles I like to change the fluids, plugs & filters annually on my machines. And in this case, for the Polaris, I also needed to make sure I could do it while on the trails if I needed to.

Because spark plugs fail LOL especially if you run it rich or mess with your choke hell there's a thousand Reasons it's a good no.4 DIY
