Happy New Year Emily! It would be really interesting for you to include some diversity stats, such as what countries they were set in, what countries the authors originate from, what minorities or underrepresented characters were etcetera... After realising my reading last year had little diversity, I made a conscious effort to read more diversely this year, especially from non-western authors. I definitely achieved that goal and actually found some new favourites. :) It is a bit of a challenge when reading fantasy and sci-fi but I have found a few that I want to read this year. I can't wait! Looking forward to all the future content you have prepared for us xxx

I got off track with reading in 2017 cuz I have so many I never knew what to start with. In 2018, I am going to try the wrapping technique. Gift wrap all of my books randomly then grab a new one each week. I have to read the first 3 chapters of that book and either finish it that week or DNF it and pick a new one for the week. Hoping that gets me to my goal of 50 books this year. Good luck with your goals!!!

Also for the science non fic: Darwin's dreampond has a fictional side to it and Spillover is a bunch of more anecdotal stories with scientific explanations. I can't really think of the author names right now, but I believe I already recommended then to you a while ago on Goodreads. Both books are a little on the older side though, so some of the knowledge probably has been explored more already (just to keep it in mind).

I think it's correct in the table. There's an implied zero at the beginning so the greater than would be open to 1000. I'm not a math expert by any means, but from what I remember, it's based on the direction of the symbol and the number together, not just the direction of the symbol.

Hi Emily. Happy New Year. I have a Goodreads challenge of listening to 55 books. I actually have started writing down the details of every book that I listen to in a notebook. I am mostly just hoping to catch up on some of the really neat authors that I have been hearing so much of on BookTube. I am also hoping to get finished with a few series that I got distracted away from finishing after I had started reading them. I am currently reading the Midnight Rose by Lucinda Riley The Prince of Dogs by Kate Elliott The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan.

As someone who has always craved representation in books I gotta say, I agree with your comment on marketable diversity. I read a couple of your replies down in the comments section and I was nodding along as I read them because I feel that frustration! Representation is great but this whole idea of "you should read this book because it's diverse." and it's like... ? Diversity is a great strength but great writing, great plot, lovely settings and worldbuilding, etc. etc. are also needed! And lots of diverse books have them, which is why the book community suffers when it suddenly becomes standard that diversity is a one word trigger to put things on peoples TBRs. Like... come ON.
@BookswithEmilyFox
@BookswithEmilyFox 6 жыл бұрын
My issue is when it's straight up marketing. Representation is fantastic. Some people think any representation is good, some think bad representation isn't good. I think bad books are bad. Diversity in them doesn't prevent them from being bad. I hate how something that should be a good thing (more diversity) is basically becoming a "ploy to make more money (and here's the key part!!) FOR SOME!
@YeahThisIsLife
@YeahThisIsLife 6 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. And it makes it so hard for genuinely good and diverse books to break through the market because people (like me and you) have become so tired of publishers using it as a buzz-word rather than sincerely promoting it. And the issue of people writing diverse books badly is just horrid, I don't need every representation of every ethnicity to be in good and strong characters, that's unrealistic and just problematic, but I would like it to be authentic. Artemis was such a disappointment because of this, a lot of romance books are disappointing because of this (which sane girl reacts to disrespect and stalking with love???), and so on and so forth. But lots of books do it right so I've recently been trying to focus on the good of that. Six of Crows is a lovely example, the writing is fantastic and the entire cast of characters is compelling and their diversity (both in ethnicity and in personality) helps them be interesting. It's also genuinely unpredictable, so: an all around good book with diversity to boot! (I finished Crooked Kingdom today so it's fresh in my mind haha).

So excited for the Diversity for Diversity's sake video - I think more own voices books are a great thing but a lot of the YA contemp diversity books are not and I like you are also a bit cyncial as to their intentions. Its not like publishers are ignorant of things like Diversity Bingo - which i fear is a good initiative, turned into a way for authors to get their books more traction on places like Booktube.

I feel the exact same way about historical fiction. I wouldn't normally buy them myself, but I got All The Light We Cannot See as a gift and I'm currently halfway through it. Here's the thing, it's beautiful so far, it has this way of being very poetic and visual while still being prose (granted short chapters), but for some reason to me it's a slow read. It's not something I fly through even though I like it a lot. But you, as a faster reader, might have better luck. I think you'll enjoy it sometime.

My biggest goal for 2018 is to read my own books! I did an unhaul and now have 96 tbr books, so I want to reduce that by reading through them by as much as possible and not buying many new ones. I will have to buy Sarah J Maas new releases and there's a few others that are on my wishlist, so I'm giving myself a one book a month allowance. Going to try not to use that allowance every month though. I only average about 50 books a year, but luckily I have lots of short books and not as many long books, so I should be able to make a good dent in my tbr this year, and be at zero next year. I also want to finish the last 3 Harry Potter books and the Anne Of green gables series, and read more non fiction.

I am really interested in your opinion to All the light I cannot see when you read it. When I read it I found it okay but the more I thought about it after reading the more problems I had with it. It is actually quite a bad book and doesnt do the topic of world war II justice. And it won a pulitzer award. Who knows why. But I would really love a discussion video if you read the book.

I dropped my reading goal from 50 to 30 this year's to accommodate for classics and bigger books.... and sleep. A recommendation for you... for your science nonfiction i suggest the following: The Poisoner's Handbook by Deborah Blum and What If by Randall Munroe (i suggest getting both a hard copy and the audio version of What If. There are great (and needed) visuals since Randall does the comic strip xkcd but Wil Wheaton does the audiobook and it's hilarious but it doesn't completely make sense without the visuals). Enjoy!!!

This makes me want to create some stats for the books I read in 2018! Very interesting to see! Do you just create an excel sheet to track it?

I liked it! I don't think I would have enjoyed the book as much if I had read it instead!
