I currently have a 2013 impreza with the manual transmission. I had some work done on it and the dealership gave me a 2017 impreza sport as a loaner. It felt a lot more solid, quiet and the interior was a lot more premium. The power and the mileage was about the same. I walked away thinking that it was a much better car to be in from day to day. @@4orrcountry Because the head gasket issue has been resolved. That was corrected from 2012 models and up. I agree they definitely had the head gasket issue for far to long and now that history will follow them, but it's simply not true anymore. Not to say they wont have other issues, only time will tell. When I was shopping for my current car, I drove about every new AWD car that I could buy for less than $55k, including offerings from all of the luxury brands. I also drove several FWD cars. After all of my research, I ended up buying an Impreza Limited 5-Door. I've now owned the car for almost a year and have just over 18,000 miles on it. So far it's been absolutely perfect! I can honestly say that it's the first car I've purchased that I haven't spent at least a little time wondering if I would have been happier buying something else. One note: Like he says, on paper, the acceleration is quite sluggish. The weird thing is that, to me at least, the Impreza actually feels a lot faster than it is when you drive it. The acceleration isn't any faster than what the video shows, but you'd swear it is. Maybe it's the growl of the boxer engine or the really tight turning ratio. Whatever it is, it's actually a lot of fun to drive. Keep in mind that I am comparing it not only to the Civic or Mazda 3, but also to cars like the Lexus GS and Audi A4.
@SameBasicRiff4 жыл бұрын
Do you still have it and like it? I got the 2017 5-door limited as well after much research and checking out other brands. Wanted 5 doors and 4 wheel drive for under 40k. Gotta say about the accelration too - I think it's the traction and 4 wheel drive. If your not drag racing up to 150 but just trying to go from 0 to 50 around a small corner, these cars have zero slip and get going quick, even if the overall acceleration is indeed slow. My friend has a Mazda hatchback (obviously quicker) but when he gets in my Subaru he swears it takes off faster.
@a27rocks4 жыл бұрын
@@SameBasicRiff I actually ended up trading it in last year. I moved down to TX and since I no longer had as much need for the AWD, I didn't want to keep taking the hit in fuel economy. There were some tanks in the Impreza where I ended up averaging less than 25 MPG. I still love the way it drove, though I did sometimes get a bit frustrated with the CVT, but I think that was more a result of Subaru trying to make it mimic a 7-speed rather than just letting it function as a pure CVT. I'm pretty sure that's also a contributing factor to the poor fuel economy. The only other issue I had with it is that the infotainment system could sometimes be a bit finicky (freezing up, not connecting to my phone, etc.). I still think it's a great car, especially if AWD is an important feature, but it no longer made as much sense for me as it did up in Maryland.
@SameBasicRiff4 жыл бұрын
@@a27rocks I find the CVT helps imo (I can keep the revs lower through various speeds) and my infotainment frooze up too but my subie dealership gave me a whole brand new one for free because of that, and no issues since. Congrats on moving to TX though. This Canadian needs that AWD ;)
@a27rocks4 жыл бұрын
@@SameBasicRiffI wasn't complaining about the fact that it has a CVT. I am actually a big fan of CVTs, especially when paired with smaller engines. I was complaining about the software that they put on it to force the CVT to have "shift points" and emulate gears like a normal transmission instead of just letting it stay in the optimal RPM range. So I've got a question about the Canadian Impreza. I heard that it has auto stop-start for the engine and a heated steering wheel. Is that right? Neither of those features was even an option in the states.
@SameBasicRiff4 жыл бұрын
@@a27rocks Hmm I thought the fake gears were to KEEP it in the optimal RPM range. I guess I could be wrong. I'm not sure what "auto stop start" for an engine means. I do have a remote starter but that was extra. It has push botton start/ stop (no keys) but that should be on the US model too, no? The top trim level has a heated steering wheel option though ya. What we dont get (and I wish we did because its way more useful) is the tire pressure monitor! We still have to check tire pressure manually.

One thing not mentioned in this review is that those faux carbon fiber bits on the interior reflect lights at night and so if you are driving on a lit street, they become very distracting / annoying. Agree with the review regarding the slowness of the power plant. Give this model 170 - 180hp and you'll have a cult following. That's all this thing really needs.

Glad to finally have a review that isn't just a lot of complaining about the underpowered engine. However, you misrepresent a few things here. 19k buys you the 2.0i. What you are driving is the Sport trim, which starts at 23k. This changes a lot of things. The 2.0i has a different suspension and brakes than the rest of the line. It feels a lot more sloppy and brakes kind of poorly in wet weather. The sport is the nicest feeling of the bunch as it takes the suspension of the premium and limited and tunes for a tighter ride. The sport is also the only impreza to get the torque vectoring. Sport makes 2 mpg less than the rest. The car is really good at knowing when to cut fuel and when to add it, so 30 minutes of driving won't give you a good number. Sport also adds the nicer infotainment system, push button start, and nicer styling in and out. You get a lot for the 4k difference, but you can't tell people that your experience represents the 19k price tag. Add in eyesight and your price tag goes up 2k. Add in one of the common packages that gives you the harmon kardon sound system and other things and you add another 2k. I have a sport trim 2017 in black and I love it, but it was a 27k car. Girlfriend is paying 25k for hers.

We just bought a new one for my brother. Cheapest possible configuration: manual, at $19,124. It’s probably the best value out there for a certain segment of driver: utility, rugged, awd, etc. The new platform provides better seats, better ride/handling and yes, is much more taut. if you’re into driving dynamics, I would scrap all of this Asian stuff and buy a VW Golf or better yet, get a 3 series BMW used, for less, with the N52 engine. Much better driver’s cars. But if a reliable workhorse is needed that does everything pretty well, for 19,124, and awd!!!, it’s a no brainer. The real world crash-worthiness of Subarus is well attested. They’re made in Indiana, making this at least some help to the USA.

reliability is plenty enough. compact cars are designed to get you from point A to Point B with little fuss. if your looking for something a little quicker, your not gonna find it in this category. get a camry or accord if you want something with a little more get up and go, those would be the 4 cylinder cars to look for. but those are designed for families, but a single person could buy one to. otherwise this is plenty for most people, most roads in America are filled with traffic. so your not gonna speed race to get somewhere in the city. im from NY, and trust me with the amount of traffic you get there a car like this that's good on gas and reliable is plenty.

Do you have the new Compass or Ford Edge with the V6 on the list to review? I really want to see someone review the new Jeep Compass.

Taylor Reynolds We’ve requested both, keep checking back on our social channels for all the latest press cars we’re testing. We have some good ones coming up :)

Nice job Subaru! I've always like the Impreza, even though the 2.0 in this car is still under-powered, and a 5 Speed manual? Come on Subaru! However, everything else looks great and has finally caught up with the competition and surpassed them, in some areas, particularly in the technology dept. If you want a compact car and live in an area that gets lots of snow, this car with its fantastic AWD system is hard to beat.

Still no temperature control? I hate having to adjust the analog climate control. This is a premium priced vehicle - needs temperature control instead of analog.

9.5 seconds? A second slower than my 2011 Corollla? Why just why? Is it the CVT?

Would you say hatchback makes a car slower/quicker? I'm debating on a hatch or sedan and I like the Versatility of a hatch but don't want it to be any slower than it already is. What's your opinion redline?

Luke Hoisington Honestly their both slow, you can't escape that.

Jonathan Washington I was talking about hatchbacks in general. Cruze, civic, impreza etc.

Could be. I have the sedan version and it feels preppy to pick up speed. Drove the hatchback and it felt the opposite. Currently have the '17 model and I trained to transmission the pick up speed and it does a good job doing it but it's a compact car. I don't expect power to be a strong suit however nothing is bad as my 1999 Ford Escort.

Luke Hoisington In that case, the civic i believe is the hotrod of the class, the hatch comes with the 1.5T (only engine avaliable).Which goes to 60 in 7-7.5 seconds which is 2 seconds ahead of the Impreza. As far as the crus i believe it gets to 60 in like 7.9 or something like that.

It depends but the Mitsubishi mirage hatch is faster than the sedan by something like a full second 0-60. Hatches are usually smaller and usually more aerodynamic so it makes sense to assume such.

I know this is totally subjective but I absolutely can't stand Subaru's seats. My wife has a Crosstrek and it's an amazing car, except the seats give me back pain. The lumbar support is too aggressive and it's nonadjustable. I tested the 2017 Impreza when I was in the market for a new car earlier this year, but ultimately went with a lightly used Volvo V60 primarily because of the seats.

sjwang40 I think you'll be a lot happier with the V60 anyways. That's a lot more car for the money.

Of course you will be more comfortable. Volvo is famous for its seats. AND it's non comparable with Subaru since it's a luxury territory. btw Enjoy!
