Great video Linus. I love ThinkPads and have owned them for years. They simply work and last forever. Just upgraded my oldest one after 7 years of trouble free use. The old machine's RAM was upgraded and I even added an SSD. No restriction computing - that is what ThinkPad means to me. We now have 5 in the family! Highly recommended unless you want a gaming laptop.

@@vista9434 Sadly not going to happen. Like stated, people want "thin sleek machines" (that aren't thick enough to provide enough mass to cool the CPU without throttling). The key travel of the classic keyboards are just too much (better) to fit in a modern laptop chassis. That being said, I bought a T25. A disappointing laptop with an amazing keyboard. (Screen sucks, sound sucks, GPU sucks, CPU sucks - but it looks pretty and has the best laptop keyboard manufactured since 2013)

Really was hoping for a viable replacement for my T420, I'm definitely starting to feel the age of it (Sandy Bridge/2011 era). However, it still has superior design and features to any Thinkpad models since then. Was hoping they'd go back to the pinnacle of ThinkPads (T420/520 for me, there's some differences of opinion on that of course), and just take the best ThinkPad they made, review the weak points of it and improve those, and call it a day. Basically, a T420 with a better screen (better quality panel, better resolution, better aspect ratio; the T420 screen sucked in every way)... and that's it. T420 with a better screen, that's all that was needed to create an awesome (read: useful) ThinkPad. (And, obviously, the obligatory update to internals and I/O). Instead we get the same thing as their modern ThinkPads, but with a different keyboard. Which is great, but it's not nearly enough to make it a replacement for an actual ThinkPad. So... Still waiting for a replacement. Might just swap mine for a T520 just so I can get a better screen and quad core in the meantime... Lenovo markets the whole retro ThinkPad thing as a collectible memorial piece, they seem to have misunderstood completely. I have work to do. The people who want a ThinkPad with some of the older design decisions aren't asking for it out of sentiment. We don't want it _because_ it's old, we just want whatever is better for getting our stuff done. It just so happens that their older designs are better for getting work done than their newer designs, so we want the older ones, but the fact that they're older is basically just happenstance, it has nothing to do with why we want them to design a laptop in that way. Sadly, beyond the keyboard, not much of the old design decisions have been re-implemented, and to top it off the specs are pathetic for the price. I'm kinda surprised Linus didn't rip it to shreds considering it's $1,900 for a dual-core, 940 MX, 1080p machine in 2017. I mean... good lord. Anyway, so I'm still waiting for a successor to my 2011 model.

No, it just keeps a lot of RAM in cache for faster allocation. You can use Win10 with 4 GB of RAM, and if you just use lighter apps it will be fine, though 8+ really is recommended.

i mean, i'm currently watchimg this on a 2013 thinkpad, and even though it's 10 years old, it still holds up to literally everything modern, except demanding games, but it's the laptop i think is by far the best-feeling and responsive laptop i've ever had (my budget is kinda limited and i bought this one off an online second-hand shop) i can't recommend the L540 more if you just want to use it for schoolwork or play lightweight games on it.

I have typed on this laptop and there is no flexing at all. They must have pressed down really really hard, at which point its probably better if the chassis bends a bit before it breaks. Newer ThinkPads usually are better than the older models when it comes to keyboard flex, because they have a more integrated design.

The very first ThinkPad came out in 1992, but I doubt they were able to find one of that vintage so they settled on the 560X, which aside from some spec bumps and upgrades over that period of 5 years it isn't a whole lot different to the very first model.

That's how Thinkpads are. The laptop has a skeleton, and the plastics are soft so its bendy where it needs to be a strong where it needs to be. My brother and I have about 6 of them.

Bummer that the 25th anniversary is on 7th gen dualies and the 940MX when they just refreshed their regular line to 8th gen ULV quads and the MX150, though this launched a few weeks before. It wouldn't be a gaming machine still, but the GPU matters for so much now even just on the web or photo and video edits, and the ULV quad would be a plus for most everyone. I would have loved to see this version become the main line with updated components as the next T480S.

I still use an old lenovo made thinkpad for office work. its keyboard switches are really smooth, and trackpad is also very nice compared to cheap g50-80 of mine. its a good come back, but does this limited edition have backlit keyboard?

I have an x220 that I picked up cheap for uni. 5+ years old and it's still the best laptop I've ever had. It isn't the fastest but it's not slow, does everything I want it to do and the keyboard just beats everything else. From now on I'm sticking to refurbished exleased laptops and probably never buying a new consumer model again.

I like it quite a bit, but I do wish it had USB 3.0 at least, a 1080p screen without a hack would be nice, and the build quality could be a little more robust for my liking. The palm rest is terribly weak around the PCI port, but other than these minor complaints, it is a great laptop. I am thinking about making my next laptop a T430 with a little modding to accept a T420 keyboard, which might address some of the lackings of the x220 for me without too much sacrifice on weight, which is a phenomenal aspect of the x220.

Used ThinkPads are my go to recommendation for every student (especially engineering, science etc.) as they are very well made, very cheap, have all the ports you need and can be easily upgraded (SSD is a must). They are absolutely great machines.

Yes,, I own a T420 and a T430, both with SSDs and 16GB of RAM. The 420 is Sandy and the 430 is Ivy. Both are decent machines, only about 30 percent slower than 2017/2018 laptops. ZBrush and the Adobe Creative Suite run just fine.

For all the people commenting that it should be the 20th anniversary: The original Thinkpad was released in 1992. Literally just google the word and you can find that information in two seconds. The reason why Linus said 1997 is because the model that they had was from 1997 probably because they couldn't find the original or something. Also, yes it is 2018 but new version of the Thinkpad was released last year in 2017. Come on people, use some common sense.

He's right about this one though. The problem is not just with this thinkpad in particular, but how Lenovo handled the problems the users had with modern thinkpads. Releasing one overpriced laptop with a 16:9 screen is only going to piss more people off (instead of releasing a whole line of "classic" thinkpads for example).
