I changed oil in my toyota auris (same as corolla in USA) and noticed something wierd. I started by first running the engine warm and then raising the car. Next I removed the oil filler cap to help drain oil better. Next removed the oil drain bolt and let it drain completely (so I thought). Then I removed the oil filter and not only did the oil drain from the filter housing and hole but stragely enough more oil came out of the drain plug hole too. Having seen that I will never plug the drain hole untill oil has drained from the oil filter too. So leave both the drain plug and filter attachment hole open for a while to drain completely.

also let your engine drip for an hour or so , or even overnight , if you want to get the most oil possible out of the engine . myself , i dont worry too much because i do short oil change intervals .

Very useful video :) I have a small problem, if you can help me I would appreciate: I have an Corolla from 2017, 1.6, valemantic, 132hp, 45.300 km on ODO. I bought this car second hand, from Germany. Recently I've made oil change - 5w-30 they put me. They said that this is the correct oil viscosity for car age and km on ODO I've seen that the owner manual preferred is 0w-20. I can used 5w-30, but after that to switch back to 0w-20. I'm living in Romania. Temepratures during the winter can go to -10 Celsius, to +35 Celsius in the summer Theoretically, they put correct oil for these conditions, but owner manual is recommending something else. Questions and concerns: They put the correct oil after all giving weather conditions? If I have right now 5w-30 it will affect my car? Should I switch back to the 0w-20 at the next oil change?
@LoneWolf74_3 жыл бұрын
All I can say is use what your owner's manual says. I also have a 2017. You have under 30,000 miles on yours. That's about what mine had when I got my car a couple of years ago. If I were you, I'd just switch back to 0W-20 (what the owner's manual recommends) . Especially in the winter when it's colder and the oil in the engine doesn't circulate as fast on initial startup. On my car, I've always done my own oil changes and used 0W-20 full synthetic. I've put over 18,000 miles on my car and never had a problem.

Shouldn’t you remove the oil filter before putting the drain plug back in. I also lift up the dipstick a little. Just to make sure there are no air pockets. Have I been doing things wrong all this time on my other vehicles?
@LoneWolf74_3 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent suggestion. I've been doing oil changes on my cars for 25+ years and never had a problem though. I guess it just comes down to one's personal preference. I prefer to do my own oil changes. The oil drain plug on my Corolla was way too tight the first time I did the oil change after I bought the car (used). Some people just go way too far tightening stuff. When I do it, I know it's done right with the proper oil and filter.
@LoneWolf74_3 жыл бұрын
@R M Yes, I heard that helps the oil flow better coming out. Excellent advice! Just make sure no leaves or anything else flies into the engine when you do that. I've almost had that happen once or twice on breezy days. I just loosen the oil filler cap and leave it on top of the engine to lessen the chance of a stray leaf getting into the engine. Especially during oil changes in the autumn.

The oil filter should be removed first, because it takes much less time to drain all of the oil out of the filter housing, then it does to drain all of the oil out from the oil pan! I always allow at least one to two hours to drain the oil from the drain plug! This way I get much more of the old oil out then I could, if I only let it drain for say, fifteen minutes!
@tjlee99012 жыл бұрын
personally i think it might make for a better flush if the filter is loosened along with the oil cap and dipstick . also a good idea to do an oil change after a good long hot run , so the oil is hot and well mixed together

When do you lower it, after you add the new oil or before? Obviously I wouldn't start the engine to do so but does it need to be on flat ground again to measure correctly? Thanks.
@LoneWolf74_3 жыл бұрын
Very true. It's always best to check the motor oil on a level surface. But I use ramps so I have to start the car first in order to back it off the ramps. I then let it run for a couple of minutes, then turn the car off & let the oil drain into the crankcase for a few minutes while I clean up my tools. Then I check the oil to make sure it's at the proper level.

@LoneWolf74_3 жыл бұрын
When I made this video, I was surprised as well, then I forgot and lubed it anyway because I'm so used to doing it on previous cars. It doesn't hurt anything though. My car has never leaked one drop or burned any oil. As of now (10-31-21), I have 46,200 miles and the engine runs like a top. My previous car was a 2011 Hyundai Sonata which burned oil with low mileage (under 50k). I got rid of it and got the Corolla. Couldn't be happier. Sure it's not the fastest car in the world but it does what It was made to do. It's a reliable commuter car. I'm sure Scotty Kilmer would approve. LOL.
