Oil & filter (cartridge) replacement on a 2016 Toyota Corolla. This vehicle uses a "cartridge" type filter that requires special tools to remove. The hardest part is the "reset service light" part!
If this video is helpful to you, please like and subscribe, thanks!
Edit - just a quick note. I changed the oil on this car again yesterday. The process is definitely easier with practice. Hardest part was finding the oil filter I like to use on it - Fram XG10358. Had to travel to five different auto parts stores to find one that had it in stock. Next time I'm ordering from Amazon. ;-)
To reset maintenance light:
1) Turn key on (don't start car)
2) Press the "Disp" button on the steering wheel until "Trip A" displays on the dash
3) Turn key off
4) Press and hold the Disp button as you turn the key back to the on position
5) Hold until all the dashes disappear on the display

Thank you for this. Did my first DIY oil change on my 2016 Corolla S. It's much easier to reset maintenance data on mine and also to remove the oil filter, because they are different! Whoa, same year corolla. To reset data switch to trip A, turn engine off. Hold down same trip switch stick and turn push engine start button. Simple. My oil filter is different from the one on the video and I did not need to fiddle with pliers, it comes right out with a simple turn of that special tool. Was shocked to find it looked so different though 😅..Had to go find the right one 🤗

Apparently there are different reset procedures depending on the level of trim. And the first results that come up on Google are for the different model. Also, apparently there was a mid-year change for this model. I'm sure for people who do this all day long it's easy. But when you only do it once or twice a year it's super-frustrating! LOL 🤣

Commenting on my own video several years later. I have learned there were several mid-year changes to this model, including whether they use a cartridge or spin on canister-style oil filter, there are different dashboard layouts (each with a different reset procedure), and also there is an improved tool for removing the cartridge. The one shown in this video isn't the right size - it's a couple mm different - but was the only one any of my local auto parts stores had in stock when I recorded this video years ago. The correct size one is able to engage the little lock tab automatically so you don't have to pull it out with plyers. Finally, there is a conversion kit if you'd like to change back to a normal canister-style oil filter. Link here: www.ptetra.com/blogs/blog/project-lexus-ct200h-spin-on-oil-filter-conversion Here is the maintenance light reset procedure for the type of dash shown in this video: 1) Turn key on (don't start car) 2) Press the "Disp" button on the steering wheel until "Trip A" displays on the dash 3) Turn key off 4) Press and hold the Disp button as you turn the key back to the on position 5) Hold until all the dashes disappear on the display Hope this helps! Also we bought a house since this video was recorded, with a garage. Hopefully my newer videos will be better, and not filmed in a parking lot, lol. 😁

Wow, this so helpful Thank you. When I bought my corolla 2016 the trip adjustment was little bit complicated. Even though I figured out finally :). All you need is to turn on the car to see the Trip adjustment option, and then click display or ''DISP'' Trip A: I usually use for the gas, to see how many kilometer I drove for a full tank. Trip B : I use to follow up the oil change time. ( And I think that is tricky part that you were trying to share with us) Thank you.

I have a 2016 Corolla S mine actually has a button on the dash but it's the same procedure. There are two trip monitors on the Toyotas there there is trip A and trip B. Before shutting the card down make sure that you are on trip A on your dash. Then all you have to do is hold the button down turn the key to the ACC position just which is all the way forward without starting vehicle. Hold the button until the zeros pop up and then you're done. But the important part is having it on trip A prior to shutting the car down

Hi Dylan! Thanks for checking out my video. From my research, the switch from canister-style filter to cartridge-style was a mid-year model change, so you may have one or the other depending on month of manufacture. We just changed the oil in this car again last month. Once again it was difficult to get the correct cartridge filter. There was a month-long wait on Amazon and it was out-of-stock in several retail stores, Walmart, etc., around me. Another common problem I've seen is people will open the boxes in the store and swap this filter for another, less expensive one - so they "buy" the less expensive filter after putting this one in the box. Always check the part number on the item itself (inside the box) if purchasing from a retail store. Hope these tips help others in the future! 😊

@@njsongwriter Hi! Thanks for all the comments about the oil filter wrench, and where to buy the correct one. After going to several local parts stores (Autozone, Advance, etc.) I bought the only one in stock. Had no idea prior to changing the oil on my wife's car that a special wrench would be required - let alone that they make several different sizes of the tool! My opinion, it is downright criminal to require a special $40 tool just to change the oil, but it's not like Toyota cares about my opinion, LOL. Hi! I'd recommend following your manufacturer's guidelines. Generally you always want to use the type of oil printed on the top of the oil cap or in your owner's manual. If you live in extreme environments a local Toyota dealership or service center should be able to advise you if you should vary from these guidelines. Good luck!

Pro tip:If you just got your car from a dealership don’t drain your oil until you don’t remove the filter first cuz I once did that and couldn’t take out the filter and i almost had to get my car towed to a shop because there was no oil left and the filter won’t come out lol
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! If you can't get the filter out, best thing is probably to just put the drain pan plug back in and refill the engine with oil (either the new oil you bought to do the oil change, or the oil you'd previously drained out, assuming you drained it into a clean pan). I don't usually recommend taking the filter off before draining the oil because sometimes that can cause a large amount of oil to pour from the filter housing, which can be difficult to catch (without spilling all over the ground). 😣

Hi! Thanks for the comment. I'm sorry I couldn't show exactly how to pull the tab out. I can't hold a camera and tools at the same time. I did explain how to do it in my dialog - which is basically just to pull it out with a pair of needle nose pliers or a Leatherman. Give it a tug and it'll come out. The maintenance light is the trickiest part and requires a lot of fiddling around. From what I've seen online there are at least three different sequences to do it on that year Toyota. There was a mid-year model change on some of this stuff so instructions that come up on Google aren't correct for all vehicles. No idea why they had to make it so difficult. Good luck! 😊

do you know how to disable the seat belt alarm toyota dealership won't tell me.

Hello, thanks for the comment. Not sure I understand your question. The "buckle your seat belt" buzzer is a safety feature required by state and federal law. No reputable dealership will disable it, or risk losing their license. I suppose if wearing a seat belt bothers you that much, you can always just buckle the seatbelt and sit on top of it? 🤷 If the buzzer is still going off even with the seatbelt buckled, the dealership should fix that for you. It's usually just a pretty simple wiring issue or a belt replacement.

Good idea! I like to be able to "feel" what I'm doing and sometimes gloves get in the way. But it certainly would protect my hands from the many scratches I've gotten over the years. ;-)

Still coming back to my own video, years later. What a dumb process to reset the service light. All of the instructions say press the "trip reset" button, but there is no button labeled that! Instead it is the "DISP" button on the steering wheel. This guy's video is probably better than mine. 😉 kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZTFg4KwjqtgY9k

is it mandatory that when you are servicing the car you have to reset service light
@CompTechMike

Hi Pius! That's an odd question. Is it "mandatory" to reset the service light? I mean, it it's your own car you can do whatever you want. Reset it or not. But if you're doing it for a customer (or being paid to do the work) it would be pretty dishonest to not do it! 😒

Do you absolutely have to have the filter housing special tool to remove it? I just spent 50 friggin bucks on oil and filter thinking I'd be changing my oil today. Then saw this video and that darn extra tool you "need". I was like, wtf? Another question. Why don't you put some chalks or rocks or SOMETHING on both sides of rear tires for added safety?? Especially with all that hard cranking on bolts, plugs, and filters. Why not? Surely you can find 4 rocks or blocks. Cause if that car just gets rocked just enough. You're done! Aaaaand one more question. Why don't you invest in a head mount go pro? So your hands will always be freed up.

@CompTechMike 4 жыл бұрын
A head mounted go-pro would be pretty awesome! Currently furloughed from my job due to Coronavirus, would be "nice to purchase someday", but I gotta put food on my table first. In any case, you probably don't "need" the special tool to remove the housing, but it's plastic and I'd be worried about trying to loosen it with a strap wrench or pliers or some other inappropriate tool. If you have an Advance Auto Parts near you you should be able to find it there. Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for the comment. That "thing" is a lock to keep the filter housing from being able to spin counter-clockwise (to remove it). Need to take it off or push it out of the way to be able to remove the filter.

@@azizjonmuqumov4046 You must have a different tool. The tool I show in the video physically won't fit with the tab in place, and the housing cannot be removed, without removing the lock tab.

@@azizjonmuqumov4046 Negative, ghost rider. The lock tab physically prevents the housing from rotating counter-clockwise. It also prevents the tool from fitting. But feel free to make your own video if you have a better way. 😀

Hi! There was a mid year model change on 2016 Corolla's. Some use a spin-on canister type and others (like ours in this video) use a cartridge. I can't recall exactly when they changed over and a quick google search was inconclusive. Auto parts websites will often list both types. My recommendation is crawl under there and do a visual inspection which yours has. From there it should be pretty obvious. Good luck!

What was the manufacturer date for this corolla
@CompTechMike
@CompTechMike 6 ай бұрын
Hi! Just went out and checked. It was manufactured December 2015 (as a 2016 model year). Interestingly, it was made in Canada. My wife bought it in Baltimore, not sure if Toyota has a big manufacturing plant in Canada that produces cars for all of North America? In any case, just mentioning it because it might be relevant to which ones got the cartridge filter and which ones got the spin-on canister type (if there are different plants). 🤷

Trip A works

You have to push the "DISP" button. Most instructions online say to push the "Trip reset" button. However in this car there is no button labeled that, thus most instructions are very confusing. 1 - turn key to run (don't start engine) 2 - press DISP button until it says "Trip A" on the screen 3 - turn car off 4 - hold down DISP button again, turn key to run (don't start engine), until all of the dashes disappear from the screen I swear I got so frustrated looking for a normal old "trip reset" push button, like most cars have. If they just said "press the DISP" button... LOL. 🤷‍♂️🤣
