Hey JBG, I was asking you last night about a night time video through Charleston. This daytime video is absolutely beautiful scenery. All of the mountains, the river, the bridges, the train, the Kmart, the capitol dome, the city what a nice ride! Gonna watch this one over and over again. Thanks to you and babyblue and the shout out from Tampers at the end. You are a good guy, safe travels to you always.

I used to be a railroad engineer in Australia. Most of the road locomotives you see have a diesel engine usually 3000 to 5000 horsepower Which drive 2 generators one for power to run the traction motors to pull the train and the other to run the lights, fuel pump cab heaters, air-conditioners and refrigerator and stove for crew comfort. When a train is standing ready to go the engineer steadily opens the throttle. This tells the governor to allow more fuel into the fuel racks and simultaneously increases the excitation of the main generator to put out more amps( Power ) to pull the train. Going down hill the engineer has 2 braking system as you do. The common is the air brake to bring the train to a stand but the supplementary brake is the dynamic brake. Mainly used on longer descending grades it turns the traction motors into generators and runs the generated power through resistors in the roof of the locomotive.Whilst disending hills like Donner Pass in California the engineer can use both braking system simultaneously which keep his wheels much cooler, There was a runaway train in San Bernadino CA where not all the dynamic brakes were working and just almost just relying totally on the air brake only and one or more wheels got so hot they just disintergrated and there was a massive derailment. Unfortunely there were fatalities.

Sorry if this has already been commented but railroad engines are diesel-electric. Alternators supply 600 volts to traction motors mounted on each axle. Until about 25 years ago, they were all DC motors, but reliable AC motors, computerized wheel slip technology, and some serious inverters allowed AC traction to become popular. Hope this helps. Peace.

Jacobs Engine brakes like the one installed on yours, the low setting engages cylinders 1 & 3, medium engages 1&3 and 2 & 4 and the high setting engages the engine brakes on all 6 cylinders.
@terriw35816 жыл бұрын
a Jake Brake works (also known as “Jacobs Engine Brake” or “compression release brake”). For those who don’t know, a “Jake Brake” is what makes that machine-gun like noise that you might hear from semi-trucks when they head down long steep hills.
@justduff89906 жыл бұрын
BASIC TRAIN ENGINE DESIGN JBG:: The ignition of diesel fuel pushes pistons connected to an electric generator. The resulting electricity powers motors connected to the wheels of the locomotive. A “diesel” internal combustion engine uses the heat generated from the compression of air during the upward cycles of the stroke to ignite the fuel.

Diesel trains can either be diesel-electric (powering a generator and basically going forward driven by an electric motor) or diesel-mechanical like Baby Blue. The latter ones are only for low speed shunting locomotives afaik.
@michaeljbrooks33206 жыл бұрын
Engines can be V-12, V-16, or V-20...Engine drives either an alternator (AC) or generator (DC) traction motors are either DC or AC.. The diesel engine has a drive shaft to the alternator then the power goes to the rectifier then to the inverter which turns the wheels..So yes its diesel and electrical..

John I don't speak tagalo and I am sure there are a lot of Americans like me that would value you as a travel companion and to show your fellow traveler lots of sights that no tour operator would probably even know about. I think the Sydney-Manila fare return is about US $500 for a about an 8 hour flight. Footnote, I already have a wife
@jerrylong20256 жыл бұрын
More on railroad engines. Trucks have jake brakes - railroad engines have whats called dynamic braking. When dynamic brakes are activated the traction motors, which normally receive electricity from the generator to drive the wheels, become generators of electricity themselves which creates resistance - this makes for better train control during braking - especially going downhill - rather than depending solely on the air brakes.

Most railroad locomotives are diesel-electric, hence a big diesel engine turning a huge generator supplying electricity to usually one traction motor pr. axle. However, some locomotives are diesel-hydraulic, where the diesel engine drives a big hydraulic transmission system. Currently the biggest one is made by the German company 'Voith' and it is a big 6 axle thing with a 5000hp main diesel engine. Many selfpropelled diesel passenger train-sets though, uses a handfull of small diesel-engines not much different from BB's engine and a "normal" mechanical gearbox.
@24juan686 жыл бұрын
so just one electric motor supposed to one in each axel?
@kibidk6 жыл бұрын
If you mean the diesel-hydraulic type, it is actually very similar to an automatic car transmission - just way, way bigger. And no electric motors at all.

The reason why that trucker went ahead of you early was because if he didn’t just pass you at least, then he would have to try an go pass both of you later on, an that’s a windy road it looks like right there, so he has to wait for the straightest road before he can pass anyone. It just saves him time to pass one truck instead of two at the same time...that was a smart move actually.

A jake brake eliminates the Powerstroke the noise you hear when the jake brake is on is the cylinder firing as a valve opens up and the power stroke is eliminated thus using the compression stroke to slow you down

Yep, the diesel engine on a locomotive is connected to a generator that generates electricity which is then sent to electric traction motors on each of the axles of locomotive. These traction motors is what moves the locomotive, hence the name diesel electric locomotives.
@24juan686 жыл бұрын
AC or DC?
@greggreen33306 жыл бұрын
Modern Diesel Electric Locomotives employ AC power because they are much more efficient than DC and require less moving parts. Typically in the US locos are 6,000 HP engines that drive an alternator and have 6 AC traction motors that drive the wheels. The wheels also have metal tyres that are heat shrunk onto the wheels. I have been a Locomotive Engineman in Australia since 1975 and have some knowledge on the subject. Thanks.

Been in locomotive maintenance shop(s) one with the CPR & the other Southern Rail. As I was a floor waxer I'd be alone in the building after 12 midnight so as the sealer or wax was drying I'd walk all over the shop looking at the locomotives. Have a feeling John would of liked to check out that place. I'd get there around 7-8 pm & be there to 4-5am. Just one of the 300 locations the boss sent me to thru the years. Some places wax monthly other places every 3 months....repeat.

Jakebrake is a system that uses the engines compression to slow you. No fuel is used. The noise is the result of highly compressed air escaping. It is critical that it be turned off while climbing hills. The moment you let off the engine the jake engages and your rpm's drop like a rock. Not good. Going up hill you want a free spinning engine in order to shift. Down steep hills have the Jake engaged and as the signs on the mountain top say select a low gear and stay there.
