For excavating out a pcb you might look in to small dental burrs or micro mills. Also dental drills are not too expensive. If you did not want to use powered tools you could try mounting the bits in a pin vise and spinning by hand.

I have dental bits. The issue with drilling is it tends to fuse the layers together, leaving a mess.

If you use a mini drill press or a cnc, drilling for one layer at a time I think it would be easier

The issue with drilling is it tends to fuse layers together and make the short worse. I use to try and drill them out, but it never worked as well as digging it out with a xacto knife.

Amazing repair Tim, I didn‘t believe these kind repairs are even possible? But what caused such damage to the board? Is that small cap you knocked off the board at the beginning?

The shorted cap near that area likely got so hot that it burned the underlying PCB.

The location of the short relative to the parts on the surface in the same area will also make/break the possibility of a successful recovery. In this case, the short was in an area where there were no complex components. A connector, and/or a few resistors/caps - not a problem. If the short was below the CPU or other chip with dozens or hundreds of pins, then the possibility of removing the short is very small.

Would that damage have happened over time or would it have been a _wham bang thank you ma'am_ quickie? I just wondered if there may have been any indication that the thing had a problem and the L user may have had the time to make a backup before Armageddon. All this because people still don't back up their precious bloody data. 🤬 Still, revenue for you I guess. 👍

those kind of damage came from persistently trying over and over again to plug the charger and boot the computer.. it was a slow-wide meltdown.. i always advice customer that if you knew your device suffered liquid damage, and you have no way to disconnect the battery immediately, go to your nearest technician and have the battery disconnected and if possible, clean the damage..
