I'll add, for those that might be looking for smoke from their trucks, the blue smoke is definitely oil and I've seen this repair work many times. All of these trucks do smoke white several seconds after startup, like seen in the video, as a normal condition. We had to chase the white smoke for a customer several times before ford responded to us, saying the trucks are programmed to heat the catalytic converters shortly after starting, in order to remove built up condensation. Many people confuse this as an oil or coolant burning issue.
@FordTechMakuloco

Yup you can see it is more of a steam and not a thicker white smoke from coolant or fuel.

My girlfriend is strongly considering a 2.7 with about 50,000 miles on it. Are y’all saying that this blue smoke thing is not a problem? I ask because she has had absolutely horrible luck with cars in the past two years. She got a little over 24,000 miles out of the 2017 1 L turbo Ford focus we got her a year ago and it just seized from engine knock (after getting the oil light on the dash the day before) the other day (91K miles) straight off the oil change rack. Needless to say after all the money I dumped into the car, I am scarred and skeptical about turbo charged gas engines. If she gets the truck, and this is an issue that needs to be addressed, I want to address it asap. Please let me know what y’all think. Thank you!
@hakz1nunke
@hakz1nunke Жыл бұрын
@@colinc1633 the 1.0 ecoboost in the focus was a throw away engine. Sorry to hear that happened, but ford does have a TSB stating if it has low oil pressure codes, just put an engine and turbo in it. The focus' in general are nightmare cars and we won't sell them anymore. The 2.7 isn't a horrible engine, and the smoking on startup isn't a catastrophic failure of any kind. The only failures I've seen were 2 different 2.7 motors leaking oil through the valve guides, which ford also has a TSB out for(17-2077), but that's only for trucks built between April 1st, 2016-January 1st 2017. Turbos aren't much of a concern on newer models, as long as you're changing oil and doing other maintenance regularly, and like many cars you might expect to do phasers at some point, and an oil pan reseal. Either way, just get a decent service contract and they'll usually cover that stuff. I don't think you'll have as many issue as you did with a 1.0 focus.

I recently replaced both of my turbos, and as such, both of these oil feed lines on each side. Before I decided to replace the lines, I flushed them with brake cleaner. Upon doing this, I realized that I had a free flow of brake cleaner through the passenger side line. The driver side would not flow any brake cleaner through the first I thought “there is my restrictions, and probably the reason why my driver’s side turbo failed”. But upon closer inspection, there is a ball or check valve underneath the filter on the driver side passenger side line does not have. I can only assume that check valve is what what was updated, and as what, keeps oil from draining down into the turbo housing and being burned. Love your videos 💪

Great video. I just completed this on my 2017 Ford F-150 2.7l EcoBoost. I'm not sure if it's just specific to the 2015-2017 models, but the updated line had a check valve on the filtered inlet end going to the block. The one I took off the truck, what appeared to be original, looked identical to the 'updated' one for $250. When I popped the filter off the new line I noticed the check valve. When I was with BMW we had the same thing on our N20 and N26 engines. When parked overnight the engine oil pressure will equalize and leak past the turbine seal. Our new feed line had a check valve in the engine side. I’m sure that one does too internally. Prevents oil pressure equalizing. Those engines were only single turbo though, wonder why Ford only wants the driver side line replaced?
@volvo09
@volvo09 Жыл бұрын
wow, I can't believe that works! I noticed my 18 is doing the smoke at startup after I let it sit for a few days. I wonder if that redesigned pipe is keeping oil from dripping out of the head and through that tube (and thus the turbo) when the engine is off and oil is slowly draining back? the change eliminating an 0 ring and changing the shape of that inlet makes me think they are doing something to try and solve drain back.... would be nice to know how that oil passage in the head works.

Appears that the second lower O-Ring was letting some oil by-pass and building up high pressure that the blue O-Ring couldn't block then leaking into the turbo. One would think it would be happening all the time, thus burning oil. What was the condition of the oil level consumption over 3k miles?

I would have thought that was total baloney but it makes sense: while the engine is running the oil is pumped under pressure and when the vehicle is off you would want it to drain back into the head. Only thing I worry about is leaks down the road due to elimination of the first o-ring but at least you'll make a video about that now, if it happens. Lol.

Mabey they added a restrictor orifice inside the new tube so it delivers less oil. That way it doesn't overfill the turbo housing, so drain back can happen quicker when you shut it off. Over delivery of oil in the low friction environment could also cause it to consume oil while running, but was undetectable because the engine is up to temp.
@hochhaul

That would increase the risk of sludge deposits blocking flow at the orifice.

The new part likely restricts / regulates oil flow to the drivers side turbo. Possibly from that deleted o-ring allowing oil to bypass the feed instead of forcing oil into it. Not uncommon to need to do this in the performance world where oil pressures are much higher and turbo placement itself can tend to cause smoking issues.

So I'd put money they put a check valve in the Turbo side so when oil pressure drops to say "5 psi" is closes and just keeps the oil in the line not letting it drain into the core housing and past the shaft seals. As for the O-ring Ford probably figured out the O-ring wasn't needed and on the new part they just said don't waste the money on the part and machining.

Your video is great help. Went to dealer back in 2021, they changed the left turbo oil supply tube, but did not resolve the issue. So went back two weeks later, but the dealer stated white/blue smoke is normal. Out of curiosity, are the newer and older oil supply tubes have same part number? Thank you for your help.

Great video. I'm curious on why the coolant line has to be removed on the 2015-2017's to change the oil feed tube? I can see having to remove the turbo flange bolt/stud is required to access the oil tube mounting bolt.

That engine is a tubing wiring nightmare! I know cars engines are complicated, but it looks like Ford took a lesson on how to plumb/wire an engine from a mid-eighties Jag V-12! YIKES!

I have a 2016 2.7 with this issue. It's quite embarrassing when others comment on it because at times the amount of smoke produced can be alarming. Will this solve the problem for mine as well? If so, what is the part number? Thanks in advance! Matt

My new ford and a lot of other peoples newer fords have been adding miles when the vehicle is off. Mine went up an extra 10,000 miles in a year and ford is denying it. Write your mileage down every time you’re done driving and keep track. Ford needs to take accountability for this.

I am a subscriber and have a problem. Yesterday my 2013 f150 4x4 plat ecoboost died after leaving a driveway with a dip. The dealership did the fuse # 27 relocate years ago. Truck cranks, no start, full power to everything. Do you have a vid of fuel pump or fpcm troubleshooting? Thnx much

The wiring harness terminates at the front drivers side door pillar. From my understand there is TSB for it. The wiring harness from the fuel pump to the door pillar MAY need to be replaced. The truck cab has to be raised to get access to the harness. Don't start replacing parts just because someone says. I THINK YOU should replace this and that. I should know..😄

Great video. I have a 2019 F150 2.7 EB. After watching this video I noticed the blue smoke. It’s not a lot of smoke, but noticeable. Is the blue smoke more of an annoyance to owners or a more serious problem if not fixed can be detrimental to the engine?

Correct, there is a check valve on the filtered inlet side going to the block. I just did this on my 2017 and noticed it. I did not have the 2 o-ring set-up.

That should under the Emissions category at the very least. Oil could kill the O2 sensors or CAT given enough oil passing by. 2 years/24000 federal, 7 years/70000 California.

Great video's. I'm dealing with a 2015 f150 2.7. The temp gauge spikes and fans run wide open. The engine never overheats. No code set. I did read somewhere the coolant sensor needs replacing. This looks like a lot of work. Am I heading the right rabbit? I replaced the head temp sensor but no help. Nice to hear from you is you should respond to me. Thanks Ford dealer say radiator hose collzapex . they twisted the hose and replaced The coolant. $536.00 bucks later same problem.

I have a 2015 F150 3.5 ecoboost my truck was doing the same thing (fan on highest setting even though engine is cold and only been running for 1-2 minutes). I did a lot of internet searching and watching KZbin videos and for most people it can boil down to 1-3 things causing it: 1. A/C pressure sensor (located just behind the radiator passenger side) like you mentioned is bad (or the connector to this sensor is bad) and needs to be replaced 2. Using non-OEM thermostats can cause this issue. Replace the non-OEM with a Ford thermostat (180F setting) 3. The A/C expansion valve (passenger side behind wheel well) is clogged or malfunctioning. Clean it our or replace it and recharge the A/C system to factory spec. Using 1 (or all) of those fixes listed above seemed to get rid of the fan running on high speed all the time for 97% of the people that had the problem in the Ford forums and on KZbin.
