In my videos I compare the 3.5 EcoBoost to the 2.7 liter EcoBoost. Both engines have their advantages and are great in different ways. Comment below! Thanks for watching!

@@DS-TRUCKS About 2 or 3 weeks ago I had a 2016 Xl my family is growing the I had a 6 foot bed and the smaller cab. My son no longer fit so I saw this at a shop I use to work at. But I notice is kind of jumps when when going from 2-3 on the 10 speed and I though that was odd. Didn’t feel on the test drive. So I came to on KZbin to see if that was normal and stumbled on your channel

Great video. I ordered my 2022 F150 Lariat in December, and it’s being shipped to my dealer now! I got the 2.7EB not so much for the efficiency, but also a few other reliability factors; one that nobody ever seems to mention when comparing this to the 3.5EB is the external water pump. With the 3.5EB, the water pump is inside the cap, so if it starts to weep, you get water in your oil which gets pumped to the turbos and every other place in the engine. With the 2.7EB, the water pump is easily replaceable without removing the front cap, and no real possibility of water contaminating the oil lines exists. I’ll be putting a catch can on as well, just to help minimize the likelihood of low-speed preignition which is often thought to be partially caused by blow-by in the PCV system. Awesome content! Thank you.

I have had one for three months . The 2.7 is a great motor . I drove a 2011 with a 5.0 in it and was reserved about the small engine. I can’t say enough about how please I am with the 2.7 it’s a beast and gets great fuel mileage if you keep your foot out of it and drive it in eco mode

Just bought a used ‘18 f150 with the 2.7 32K mikes and I’ve always been a V8 guy but this motor absolutely blew me away!!! Mine is going in Tuesday because my oil pan looks wet and I still have a little left under the factory powertrain warranty so I figured get everything/anything fixed before it ends… Great video, glad I found your channel and love seeing another passionate ford fan!! The block skirt has cross-members built into it for extreme rigidity and smooth performance. I waited several years to see where this motor would fail, but never saw anything that gave me pause. I've had mine three years now and love , love, love it! ZERO turbo lag, and a mountain of torque. Milage can suffer with the 4 wheel version and the STX 20" wheels, combined with a heavy foot. With about the same or more power than a Cleveland 351, I'll take the 16 MPG's!

I've been researching for a new F150 for a while now. Just can't afford one, but I can dream for free. Anyways, I've been that typical "gotta have a V8" guy. Not because that's what a truck should always have, but more so on the topic of less components make the engine more reliable. There are also a few videos out there asking Ford Techs which engine they'd rather have, and the 5.0L always comes out on top. Thankfully, they're starting to ask why. Exhaust note, "because it's a truck", and other menial things mean nothing to me in terms of being a user. The folks who have supported the 2.7L have been thorough and I can relate to their usages: Family hauler, weekend projects, occasional tow of a trailer, around town driving, and some highway use. Nothing but good things to say. Then, I've found a few good review videos of the engine, and even in this video, there's the mention of the cast exhaust manifolds, which I think is not only clever, but makes everything a bit more reliable. If you're like me, wanting a truck that'll haul your family around, pick up stuff at Lowe's, haul a small trailer very rarely (although the truck is more than capable of pulling a decent sized travel trailer camper), this engine seems to be the best fit for all. Even better that it's the standard option on the Lariat trims.

TFL actually hauled max tow rating on the 2.7 (and 3.5 because they have identical tow ratings) up the IKE and it didn't break a sweat, and, actually got up the IKE a few seconds quicker than the 3.5. probably because it doesn't need to suck in so much air to work because lower displacement up at 10-11K feet. It also gives you peak torque sooner and keeps it up longer than both 3.5 and 5.0... It's a stout little engine that has more bite than bark. And I'm a V8 only kind of guy but the 2.7 seems to break that mold a bit.

I have the 2018 2.7L ecoboost and I love it. Almost bought a catch can but after much research, seemed unnecessary with the direct and multi port injectors. Only thing negative is I can get a little heat soak when I first drive it which causes a little power loss with the turbo lag. Very nice looking trucks! Also found if you flash your high beams you can get the mileage on your dash without having to use the keys. Comes in handy during oil changes.

I can't see why they won't make a 3.5 like this. The name of the game is efficiency and they've achieved 90% of the capability of the 3.5 with the 2.7 in a compact form factor. This would absolutely shit all over everything on the market other than heavy duty diesels if they did it with the 3.5. water-cooled exhaust, dual injection, increased compression and such... It's not like the 2.7 is revolutionary step, more of an evolution from the original ecoboost design but better, and made from the get go to be turbocharged.

Great video dude. I kind of wish I saw this before getting my 3.5. In my mind I just wanted the 3.5 for more power. I didn't realize the cam phaser issue before buying it. Based on your break down of the turbos/manifold and cooling, it seems like the turbos were an after thought on the 3.5. And then they built the 2.7 with the intention of turbos.

9,145 miles and my 2020 supercrew with 2.7 ecoboost died on me. The knock sensor wiring harness burned up which I'm finding out this is happening with a lot of the 2nd gen ecoboost engines because Ford engineers decided to put the harness in the engine valley. @BeerBourbonBaits 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jerry, I’ve had the 2.7 for two and a half years now. Similar to you, I have (well had) a short commute to work and haven’t had any issues. The key thing with engines of any kind are heat cycles, not distance. So the life of an engine is more counted by every time it goes from cold, to hot. With the dual fuel delivery system the carbon buildup is not an issue as much with a short heat cycle. I always make a point on weekends at least once a month to get the truck up to temp while doing errands and do a “launch”. So finding an on ramp, going slow, then revving the engine out to high rpm. Once at high way speeds I put it in manual mode to keep rpm high for a little bit and just make sure I’ve got a lot of pressure going through the system. This should help with burning off any buildup and make sure all gaskets and things see top operating pressures. These eco-boosts have a plastic variable pressure relief valve that is computer controlled. In Eco mode they do a good job of making the engine feel naturally aspirated and deliver smooth power. But when you put your foot down, it really builds the boost. Feels like a sports car and the torque delivery is amazing. It’s just important to exercise the system a make sure it sees the full spectrum of driving possibilities. At least in my opinion. The choice between 2.7 and 5.0 is all about power delivery. If you want torque at low RPM and be able to drive kind of like a diesel then get the 2.7. If you like to rev out to get your power then get the 5.0. Both powertrains when maintained properly should get 250k miles easy. The weak link in my opinion is the 10 speed transmission which both have. In normal mode it can’t make up its mind on what to do.. so just use the mode selector to tell it what you’re doing and it seems to operate better and not search for gears or shift at weird points you don’t expect.

My manual says 91 octane all the time for optimal performance. Comming from a huge background of turbo cars as far back as the 90s , run premium fuel people. I know the truck comes with maps to run 87, and it will , but if you’re looking for longevity run premium.

I have a 2017 eco boost with the 2.7 engine. And recently every once in a while it starts to run rough and if I come to it stop, it will shut off. And I get this weird smell coming off the exhaust and I can hear a lot of air pressure coming outta the gas cap. It only happens once a week or so. And than it goes away. I’ve taken it to a few shops around and so far no one seems to know what’s wrong with it. Do you have any advice? Thank you.

I’ve only averaged 21 mpgs for the life of the truck(according to the computer) and I was hoping for better. I’ve done as well as 25 though. Only issues with the 2.7L are : the first generation had oil pan leaks, a few minor turbo issues with excessive exhaust smoke and a batch of em had some mis-machined heads which lead to some recalls. The second generation 2.7L has had EGR cooler failures. While this may sound like a lot, it’s only a tiny percentage of the 2.7’s out there. It is a dependable engine and has less issues than the 3.5EB

Brian F I just got a 2020 2.7 so I’m hoping I got a good one. What’s your opinion on the longevity of the motor? Do you think I could get 200k out of it? I usually keep my trucks for 7 years or so and run up the miles.
@bcfmef
@bcfmef 3 жыл бұрын
@@timschultes6467 there are plenty out here with 150k miles plus with very little issues. the second generation should be better longevity wise since it has both port and direct injection. Stay away from excessive tuning. Change oil every 4k miles or so with a good quality oil. And it should be a winner over the long haul. you will probably have a few recalls, because lets face it. All car manufactures have them now . Its just part of owning a new vehicle now

Brian F thanks for the info. I’m not going to be tuning the engine it’s plenty powerful. And I’m good about changing my oil I always go full synthetic like Mobil 1 or something of that quality. Only difference from my last f-150 had a 5.0 and I was able to do an oil change every 7k or so. Not a big deal doing it every 4 to 5. I’m a big Ford guy I have faith they built a good engine. They really have no choice because 95% of the 900,000 they sell a year have a 2.7 so they better do it right lol 😂
@bcfmef
@bcfmef 3 жыл бұрын
Tim Schultes to be honest , the 2.7 is probably Fords most reliable ecoboost engine. Nothing wrong putting a tune on one. Just don’t get crazy with it . As far as the 900,000 sales figure goes. I believe Fords long streak is in grave danger of losing it. The Corona virus and GMs huge discounts have nearly equaled the sales figures
@timschultes6467
@timschultes6467 3 жыл бұрын
Brian F yes I agree with you because when I bought my truck they weren’t discounting them as much as they usually do due to inventory shortages. Not a fan of GM or Ram I think the Chevy is very ugly looking the GMC is the better of the GM. As far as RAM goes it’s a beautiful truck but built by Fiat Chrysler which in my opinion is trash. I think the ford with the fully boxed steel frame and their long history of trucks that are made for the job site will prevail in the end. I do believe they all have gotten way to expensive for the average working American like myself. That’s why I had to get an STX because the other models are so damn expensive I don’t know how people do it.

I happen to see a video of a tear down of this particular engine and there’s one thing that struck me that I definitely didn’t like in the timing chain area they’re actually using a belt that actually dips down into the oil pan which to me I wouldn’t know why you would want a belt in an oil pan it makes no sense. The motor had 96,000 miles and when they checked his belt you can see that it was already cracking all up getting ready to give out. another thing is is that this particular engine has oil pan leaks.
