2018 BMW 440i Gran Coupe Review

The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is something of an oddity: a sedan version of the 4 Series - but it's sexier than a 3 Series, I think. This is the 440i, which rivals the Audi S5 Sportback, Mercedes-AMG C43 and even the Kia Stinger GT. But what is the 440i M Sport like to live with? Do you like it? Let me know in the comments!

My favorite model of the BMW's after the 1 series. I just love lift back 4 doors, for practicality while retaining the performance nature on the 4 series. But let me ask you this, would you rather this car, over a new M140i? Particularly since you're getting a lot of shared mechanicals in a more affordable, lighter weight and just as practical package. The real trade off is the looks, obviously the 4 series is a stunner, although I'm one of the few that loves the look of the wagon like 1 series sleeper...

Hmm… that's a good question to pose, Guy. I think I'd save $40K and buy the M140i - but if I was in a different time of my life, i.e. older and wanting a more mature car, not a hot hatch - the 440i is a pretty attractive thought.

I have a 418 d Gran coupé bmw, and i love it very much ! Is not so powerfull as a 440i , but for me is enough. 150 hp. For me ( my age ) its good !!!

Mine is a 430i (2 litre twin turbo) but it has a bhp of 248. Is there a reason for the much higher horse power ? Because it's petrol ?

You get properly screwed in Australia for new car prices. In the U.K. I am looking at spending just over $90k for a new Alpina 4 series; or just under that amount for a new C43 AMG with all the bells and whistles. As an expat Aussie, that’s a nice problem to have.

Aventurine Red:), as an F30 driver for more than 4 years I can only say: the 4GC is a very nice car but the LCI was not done properly . It should have added electronic handbrake, interior lighting, replacement of the ugly plastic around the gear stick. I would gladly change my F30 and buy the F36 (in Europe you get currently almost 30% discount from the dealer price) but after I spent 300 000 km driving the F30, I need simply a little bit more sophisticated interior. That is also the main reason for the increase in the MB sales in the last years, nevertheless as you pointed out: BWM Idrive system is still the the best car multimedia you can buy today.

Great points Georgi. There are a number of surfaces inside the 3er/4GC that aren't entirely up to scratch, although the actual build quality is high. Incorporating the new-style shifter from the 5er would have been nice. However, I will say that I prefer the restrained aesthetic of the BMW interior to what I perceive as the overly flashy C-Class.

Electronic handbrake? Hell no! And if you don’t like the plastic around the gear stick you should have added the ceramic option. Interior lighting is nice tho. If you really want an interior that is better then you should go for the 5 series! Oh and in what country do you get 30% discount?? Not in the Netherlands right?

Valentijn de Zwart there is no ceramic option for the plastic around the gear stick in the 4 series, check the configurator. Regarding discount - in Bulgaria currently Bmw is offering almost that percentage,however I both already 2 cars from them.

Georgi Veselinov the option isn’t available in the configurator but you can switch the F3x gear stick to an F10 ceramic gear stick. And those discounts in Bulgaria are insane! Here in the Netherlands you can only get maybe 10 percent

In terms of being a good BMW, the 4 Series Gran Coupe is the better car. The 3 Series GT is pretty enormous. It's designed as a large-legroom alternative model for the Chinese market. It's still rear-drive and comes with the same engines, but the size and heft don't really give it much BMW cred, and in my view, it looks awkward. On the other hand, the 4GC rides lower, has a sportier centre of gravity, and has better proportions aesthetically.

As much as I liked the 440i, I had to go for the 435d in the end. X drive should be standard on the 440i as it is on the 435d.

I just wish bmw made a proper m440i xdrive out of it with a proper sportsdif . It is losing in any test against the s5 and c43, which is pretty disappointing. Still would get the 440i though

It's a different flavour to the AMG C43 and S5, to be honest. Both of them are trying to be 'performance-light' (being products of Audi Sport and Mercedes-AMG), whereas the 440i isn't trying to be a BMW M anything - it's just a faster version of a standard 4 Series. I know that's a slightly unusual explanation, but it makes sense to me.

The reason why the 340i/440i have less power than the m140i/m240i, is that BMW wants to sell you their M-Performance Power Kit. You cannot get this kit for the m140i/m240i. The power kit gives the car 265 kW and 500 Nm (480 Nm if you have manual transmission).

zemekiel Unless you’re tracking these cars it’s all a bit redundant. There are so few occasions on public roads where you’re going to properly utilise every last bit of power to a point where it makes any kind of real difference. (UK at least)

Haha. In the European press so many comparisons are drawn to the Stinger because over there, it’s priced very closely to the 440i/C43/S5. Here though there is a $40K gap between the Stinger GT and the 440i.

You can order the 440i with a 6 speed manual in Australia for the same cost as the auto.

Chasing Cars not in Germany. It was possible for the 435i Grand Coupe but not for the 440i GC. Also watch closely, 4 Series Coupe is available with a manual, just like the 340i sedan but not the touring. I have a child, i want a manual inline six with four doors and a big hatch. BMW only offers the M140i with this combination.

As a driving enthusiast I never saw a situation where I’d own an automatic until I owned this car. The auto box has completely won me over and if all future autos are as good as this I’ll never go back to manual. When you can slip the shifter over to manual gear selection and use the paddles if you want to do some sport driving, what’s the drawback?

GCB One problem comes with the software and the shifting program. You cannot use sport or sport plus without stupid high revs also when you pass a village. Eco is the most annoying thing ever and Comfort can be sluggish at times. I found myself constantly changing the drive mode, which also interferes with the gas pedal, steering and the optional dampening. You cannot separate these, which is annoying. In manual mode i found that the zf8spd from a 2016 M135i, 220i Coupe and some others i tried, was only fast when shifting one gear at a time. Fast downshifts of let's say three gears takes ages. Overall i was left with the feeling i'm wrestling with a stupid computer and not with a simple device that does exactly what i want. Also the switch pedals are small and the actuation felt cheap compared to an Alfa Romeo Giulia pedal. Oh one more thing, no clutch kicking. Also the sound when you shift with throttle blips is far more enjoyable. 8spd also means shifting way too often when you decided to do it manually. In the end i was happy to get myself an M140i as a manual. I may have gone for a 440i but it's not available.

@@YouThana In Sport + (and having put the lever to the left) it becomes absolutely manual and you can hit the rev-limiter without it changing gear by itself and you can also floor it at 1000revs without kicking -down. So it's a proper manual. Yes, having 8 speeds makes for some more gear changing, but if you have the 440 it's so torquey that you don't need many changes.

Chasing Cars i kind of get what you're trying to say, even in canada we use the metric system, but using kW and nm as units of measurements on a review?

It really is what we use in Australia - kW, Nm, and l/100km. When I watch American or British reviews, I'm converting hp, lbs-ft and mpg into the units I'm familiar with so I can compare them in my imagination to cars I've actually driven, knowing how those figures relate (approximately) to experience. Google can convert kW into hp or ps or whatever you use in Canada.
