2018 BMW M6 Gran Coupe - One Take

The BMW M6 Gran Coupe is, mechanically speaking, identical to the outgoing F10 M5, with a 560hp Twin-Turbo 4.4L V8, 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and, unlike the new M5, rear-wheel-drive only. The dimensions are similar to the M5's as well, but the styling and attitude say something else. And now that the new M5 has been very conservatively re-styled, the extroverts in us should have a look at the four-door version of the two-door version.

I love the way the M6 Gran Coupe looks. I like it better than the M5. That interior is soooooooo nice too. That pumped in sound though just slays me. I couldn't believe when they first put that in, it's more difficult for me to believe that they continued to leave it in the car without a way to turn it off via the infotainment system.

I have the same car with a competition , pretty much agree with you on everything except on the weight part , I think this car is so heavy and being a fast car even makes it feel heavier that it really is , which also affects the brakes, it takes a long time to stop .

Rear brakes are bigger in diameter nowadays, but not necessarily bigger. They run a similar width contact area. The center diameter is what grew, both for looks and better cooling of the disk, since you get a few extra inches in circumference. My best guess is that it's mostly for looks, and I do aprove that

I own a 650 grand coupe.....I’m hoping the the next gen is AWD.... Connectivity in mine sucks! I have 480hp and it’s a highway monster. Fake noise in cabin is a non issue, I actually like it. Great review, he was spot on.

As a fellow auto journalist and KZbinr, I have driven the new E63 S AMG on the track at Monticello (see video on my KZbin channel) and it was a beast. It has an even nicer interior than the BMW. That being said I still prefer the driving dynamics of the BMW. I test drove a 2014 M6 Gran Coupe last week. I am thinking of buying one. Regarding the difference between this and the F10 M5, the Gran Coupe has no head room in the back and is only a 4 seater compared to the M5 which seats 5. I am 6 feet tall and my head hits the roof when I am in the back seat of the Gran Coupe.

I think the reason for the large rear rotors is due to the fact that in combination with the car's weight bias and center of gravity it has a large rear contact patch that offers more traction. Also, airflow under the car and through the rear wheel arches may not be enough to dissipate the thermal energy stored in the rotor under hard braking. Also, a smaller rotor may not have the capacity to safely absorb the heat input from say a panic 155-0 MPH stop. Instead they may have to be relying on radiation more than convection to remove the heat. Sorry Matt, I should have been more detailed. My previous post didn't make as much sense as I'd have liked upon re-reading. Thanks for pointing out.

Stefan Cupovic Drove an M4 for a couple of months. It was limited to 269kph as well. That's roughly 250 kph when you accurately measure it with GPS. Sucks! There's no reason to it when at the same time Porsche lets their cars off the leash without customers having to pay extra.

You have to deactivate the ASD module via coding, although it will be reset after every software update. I think unplugging it also works but it will cause fault codes.

You can just code it off. However in the f10/12 m5 & m6 the interior is so quiet you won't hear anything even when the actual exhaust note is super loud outside in sport mode with the flap open. The M3&4 tho, it will still be loud.

Hi Matt, It looks to me that the test car you were in is using the steel brakes, with the blue calipers and the larger holes drilled into the rotors. Stopping distances will be relatively the same on the street for both but obviously the heat tolerances and track use favor the carbon option significantly. Also, the lines do appear on the back up camera once the option is turned on the parking assist screen. The sensors will give you the distance to the object, assisting with the distortion from the wide angle lens which allows for an ability to see cross traffic when backing up. The Bluetooth connectivity has been something I have encountered before, particularly when dealing with IOS devices and multiple media applications working at the same time. I have replicated the situation with an android device and had no trouble when running multiple apps providing sound input to the car. I believe it is something in the IOS creating the hiccup. Matt, as far as the Waze connectivity issue, it's a BMW software issue. After they updated the iDrive in my 2014 228i it started doing the same thing. You have to turn off your BT on your phone and then turn it back on for it to work. If that doesn't work then you have to turn the whole car off and back on to get it to work. That's the fix. Great review but yeah a little blurry for some reason.

What about the very British 1970s Rover 3.5 litre V8 4 door coupe.? I have never got that one either. To me a coupe is a 2 door with enough room in back for 2 adults to squeeze in and a fast back design. Perfect example would be 1970s Audi 100 saloon and the coupe version. Or even 1970s Ford Granada saloon and it's coupe equivalent. XJ saloon and coupe. Perfect examples of the difference between a 2 door coupe and a 4 door saloon.
