Another advantage of the 50" machines is that riding on popular trails with oncoming traffic is less hair raising than with wider machines, especially those that are over 70". When rounding a corner at speed and you see someone coming at you, it's easier to move over and avoid a head on collision with the oncoming machine. Also when off the trail in tight slow stuff, the smaller width has an advantage. Lastly, riding with your "better half" that close to you can help build the relationship and it's easier to communicate.

You bring up a good point with sharing the trail. The 50" width definitely makes moving around other machines easier.

The Maverick trail was a smart move by Canam. In many parts of America, trails are limited to 50 inch machines. Not being able to hit these more narrow trails can be a rel bummer because many of them are so much fun.

Sorry for the slow response here! Totally agree on that. There is something so much fun about riding 50-inch trails. I wish all the manufacturers made 50-inch side-by-sides. Thanks for watching and for commenting.

Picking up my new mav trail this week. Looking forward to the ride. We'll see where the mud goes as there is always a solution. I like the look and know that it's tight on the left shoulder but I found it makes a good arm rest. We'll see how it goes.
@atvescape
@atvescape 6 жыл бұрын
That is really cool! Which one did you get? Ah...you got the 1000 because it has doors for an arm rest. You will like having the doors.I have no doubt you will like it. If you think to comment again once you have ridden it and tell us what you think. Send us a picture of it with you in it to rides@atvescape.com and I will get it in the next issue of ATV & UTV ESCAPE Magazine! Thanks for the comment.

We finally took the Mav out and let me tell you it was great. If I could load pics or video's I would. My wife let me drive it for about 20 minutes then kicked me off. I'm certain when she learns how to use the options like dif lock, eco mode, sport mode and 4 wheel drive she'll be able to control the power better. I on the other hand for the short time I rode it found the tight fit easily dealt with. Being 325 pounds 6ft tall I had no issues fitting in and was very comfortable. My buddies have Polaris and so far two of them after seeing mine stated , "if they wouldn't lose so much money they would trade them in for the mav trail. I've been in the Polaris and decided to wait for the Can Am trail and happy I did.

Thanks for letting us know what you thought, and that you are happy with spending your hard-earned dollars on a Maverick Trail. Sounds like you are not going to be able to drive it much though! Send us an email at rides@atvescape.com with pics and where you are from so I can get it in the next issue of the mag. Let me know about the mud on the rear end if you think about it.

I found the doors intruded to much into the cab area and were tight against my shoulder. I was looking a purchasing the DPS 1000 version but won’t pay for doors I would have to remove. Someone will make better doors for these that bulge out in the shoulder area. I never paid attention to the wheels extending we’ll pass the box before like you pointed out and this is a huge issue for dirt and debris being shot up towards the box. Mud guard extensions of some type will be a must here.
@atvescape
@atvescape 6 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying about the doors. It is tight, and I know Can-Am had to keep the 50-inch footprint and that is why they don't bow out. The RZR trail is similar. I would think someone will make aftermarket doors that offer more room, but be careful because they might not fit down a 50-inch trail!I found myself putting my left arm on the top of the door while driving. I stared at the back on the mud flap idea, and it will be interesting to see if a company can span the length and keep mud flaps rigid. Someone will probably come up with something. Thanks for the comment and your thoughts.

If I understand correctly, the fuel tank is 10gal (38L)...how many miles (KM) is one expected to get on that?
@atvescape
@atvescape 6 жыл бұрын
It is 10 gallons which seems to be more or less the standard of SxS's recently. I don't know with any certainty, but I will guess you could expect up to 15 in the 800 ad 10 to 12 in the 1000. I would say that is my educated guess. Thanks for the question and comment. If you find out for sure let us know.

everyone says to get the DPS... yes, of course it's easy to say to just get more options and yes it makes it better. However, what id like to know is it worth $2,000 or paying a 20% premium for that option?
@atvescape
@atvescape 5 жыл бұрын
Here is my humble opinion: If you are going to spend that much on a SxS then spend the extra 2k to get DPS. You will not regret spending that money, but you very well could regret not spending it. It would be nice if the DPS model was $700 more and just had the EPS unit, but Can-Am packages that with the different power modes and a higher-end look. I would still spend the money. I asked Casey (other review guy that I work with and editor #2 of ATV & UTV ESCAPE Magazine the same thing. He had a chance to drive the non-DPS/EPS version, and he said he expected it to be problematic on the rocky terrain we rode on. He said he wasn't that bad, and was actually pretty good. He said he would not say to "not buy it" without DPS. Those are our thoughts, and I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

I hope Textron does a makeover on the Wildcat Trail. I sat in one last weekend at a dealer and it was a hunk of junk. It had been sitting there for a year with no one buying it. The fit and finish on it was horrible. No way would I buy one if the Can-Am Trail is at similar price and has a nice fit and finish. I agree though that the rear end does look odd. I'd have to put an aftermarket bumper on it to protect the rear shocks.

Honda! Why does everyone forget about the Pioneer 500? Sure its not as fast but the thing is a little tank and far more reliable than polaris and arctic cat. This new maverick trail is an awesome machine though, no arguments about that here!
@atvescape
@atvescape 6 жыл бұрын
My argument is that the Pioneer 500 is not an apples to apples comparison, and I don't mean that in a bad way! It really isn't recreational as much as it is designed for utility. That is more its purpose. That is not to say it is not recreational though. The specs just don't really compare to the RZR, Maverick Trail, or Wildcat Trail. I totally agree with you that Honda takes the award for reliability. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

How would you compare the ride and handling to the 2016-18 Yamaha Wolverine R-Spec? I realize that machine is around 60" wide, but I'm considering it.
@atvescape
@atvescape 5 жыл бұрын
Those are so different. The Maverick trail is going to offer a smoother ride....by a little. The sitting position is completely different making the handling feel very different. Longer wheelbase means it will be less maneuverable in the tight trails. I feel like the Maverick Trail feels very stable, but simple physics means the Wolverine will be more stable in off camber. The Wolverine is more of a truck while the Maverick is more like a trail sports car. Both a really good, but completely different. Just be sure to go sit in both and start the engines in both. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching and for reaching out.

@@atvescape I bought a 1000 DPS and love it! Unfortunately the rear suspension feels more like "no suspension" even on the softest spring preload setting. I'm guessing that BRP did that to help maintain ground clearance over mounds and hill edges and to prevent body movement (the anti-roll bars help that too). It definitely understeers on high speed sandy turns, but I'm getting the hang of going into the turn at speed, letting off the gas and starting the turn, then hitting the gas so the back end moves out a bit with an oversteer. Everything else is great. The interior and exterior design, fit and finish, material quality, and overall engineering is top notch. The Polaris and Arctic Cat (Textron) trail machines looked and felt more like Massimo (Chinese) machines by comparison, which helped make the decision to buy easier. Keep up the good work with your excellent reviews!!

How does extra length make for a better ride? Being longer just means easier to bottom out on a point I mean wheelbase
@atvescape
@atvescape 6 жыл бұрын
As a rule the longer the wheelbase is the better the ride is given the same setup with a shorter wheelbase. That has always been my experience. I am not sure if the added weight and the center of gravity are the reasons for that. I know there is a physics reason, and because I don't know the exact reason, I am going to find out and get back to this comment! Thanks for the comment.
@glenm2229
@glenm2229 6 жыл бұрын
Longer wheelbases are smoother over bumps, but as you note they suffer greatly in reduced breakover angle for larger/rougher obstacles. It's a trade off between higher speeds on smoother surfaces, and navigability over rough terrain.

Market for to 50" isn't about those who are restricted to 50" trails.... its about opening up multi-thousands of miles of trails to riders. Trails that the other machines cannot legally access. 50" machines can use the entire trail systems. CanAm is what we have been waiting for. BTW we have an Arctic Cat and a Rzr Trail.

Hey Steve, sorry for the slow reply. I have had no experience with a CF Moto Z Force, but I would choose the Can-Am because I am skeptical CF moto. Not only has Can-Am been building side-by-sides for years, but it is easy to have it worked on because of the dealer base. I am just offering my opinion and being brutally honest with my thoughts. No, I am not paid by Can-Am!

Can Am really dropped the ball with the hood sighline and the rear end. That short box just sitting there waiting to catch mud is ridiculous!

If Can-Am wanted a long wheelbase, I get they had to lengthen the front hood, and it does offer more cab room. I bet most people driving this SxS will probably not being riding extreme trails where picking lines in too hard! Thanks for the comment.

Almost all of them in the recreational side of the market throw mud in places people don't want it. The way the tires come out several inches from the rear of the bed with no mud flap or wheel well means it will be more extreme on the Maverick Trail. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
