Styled after the Maverick X3, the new Maverick Trail is available in standard and DPS models. The DPS models feature a ton of added features including Can-Am’s Dynamic Power Steering, faster engaging Visco-Lok QE auto locking front differential, an unlockable rear differential, selectable sport and eco engine modes, cast aluminum wheels, color matched suspension springs, and LED Running lights. Maverick trail 800s feature door nets while the 1000s come with half doors. We got our hands on a top of the line Maverick Trail DPS 1000 that was broken in at the Can-Am press intro, giving us an idea of how the car holds up after a few rough rides.
Can-Am has raised the bar in the 50” trail class. While its sheer engine performance may not be heads and shoulders above its closest competitor, it is certainly impressive and driver friendly. The Maverick sacrifices a little turning radius and ground clearance cresting hills for a car with more predictable climbing, high-speed stability, and a smoother ride. Where the Maverick really shines is its level of refinement; from its well-thought-out spacious cockpit to its trail-tuned suspension, every aspect of the car performs well individually and as a total package. Rob and the rest of us all came away with a little more respect and appreciation for the 50” class after spending a few weeks testing the Maverick Trail.
The Maverick Trail is sure to be a hit with tight trail sportsters. With the level of accessory integration, ability to navigate in the tight stuff, and camo models available, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them being used for hunting out in the deep woods.
Starting at $10,999, the base model 800 could offer the best performance for the dollar in the 50” trail sport class and is sure to attract a number of new enthusiasts looking for a quality, name brand unit at an affordable, entry-level price. Looking at the total package, with the top of the line Maverick Trail 1000 DPS retailing for $14,799, the newest kid on the block could certainly be the one to beat in the 50” trail sport class.

Excellent and through review -- worlds better than Dirt Trax reviews (yours are more objective, theirs more subjective). I really like the detailed analysis and explanations of various components and features on the machine, particularly pointing out the added features of the DPS model (even the dealer couldn't provide that info). I test drove an 800 Trail yesterday and was very impressed in every way. The strong midrange acceleration is impressive. As you noted, I also noticed the firm rear suspension, but once you explained that this helps to increase effective ground clearance (which can be exacerbated by the long wheelbase), it makes sense and can be an asset rather than a liability. Keep up the great work!

We really appreciate you taking the time to watch and give us your feedback. We want as much information as possible before we spend our hard-earned money and do our best to provided for our viewers. Dirt Trax does a great job. You can only go so long with reviews when you're making segments for television. We are flattered being compared to them. Please let us know if you ever have a chance to drive the 1000. We would like to know how it compares to the 800.

Thank you, we really appreciated. We grew up on Motocross magazines so we learned to geek out on specifications. The dirt bike magazines always did a better job of explaining the details of the bikes and how it affected their performance. We do our best to try and provide that type of detail in side by sides and ATVs on our other channel. Thanks again for your comments, subscription, and taking the time to watch our videos.

In stock form the break over angle (pretty much ground clearance) and side-hilling is something to be concerned about, but after putting 28" tires, front sway bar removal, and heavy duty skid plates, this thing will go anywhere worry free! If you're a strict tight trail rider, this is the best option out there!

It's the 100 horsepower version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d6CwnWqfobubjtU As far as the Outlander Max goes, our sister Channel ATV on Demand has ordered the vast majority of its 2021 test units. It don't think the Outlander Max 850 is a request we can fill in the short-term although they would like to test some two-seaters. Hello, Maverick Trail 700, When driving down a hill when I have the engine braking, it suddenly happens as if it clicks to accelerate a little and immediately after 1 second it brakes again. Today, the bass completely jumped out and there was a scraping sound, I braked, moved the gear lever a little and continued to drive normally Maybe the cable needs to be adjusted or is the problem with the gearbox, maybe a one-way bearing

Nice. Luckily I have a Stihl/ Kubota/ Can Am/ Ski-Doo dealer less than a mile from my home. I am good friends with the owner and have test ridden just about anything they have. I took the new 50" Maverick Trail 1000 DPS for a rip on the test track and hill climb. Very impressive for a SXS imo. I liked it quite a bit better than my friends Polaris 900, 50" SXS. Just seemed to have a better overall build quality, and I am partial to Rotax engines. Do you guys know why Can Am has never made the CVT system to utilitze a centrifugal clutch system like on a Yamaha? Just wondered as I always liked that set up on any ATV I ever rode that had it. It seems like its less things to go wrong, and offers a more real engine braking feel. I was happy when Kawasaki finally went to that system with the Teryx but have never tried one. To narrow unfortunately for my son and I. He is built like a linebacker, and I am 6'2" and 250lbs myself. I have been eyeing a new Defender series as it would suit us best for all around work and recreation over what we have now. I have had a Kubota 1120D model new since 2013 and fitted it with a soft cab and defroster for snow plowing in the winter. I have a 6ft. Curtis hydraulic angle plow system and a salt spreader in the back. The hydraulic life for the bed on the Kubota is no joke..Very powerful...I fill the back with our Kubota BX-25 FEL with stones or dirt and it has 0 issues with dumping anything I put in it...Its our work vehicle and its been 100% reliable so I am not going to trade it in. We are just looking to add to the fleet as we do landscaping, and gravel roads and drives as a business...The Defender 1000 will probably be it...Thanks for the test on the Trail...Sorry for the long post,,,I just like to put real life opinions of machines for others to read....Stu

The cvt is more than a clutch. Its a constantly changing infinite drive ratio system. The ratio between the drive unit and driven unit changed based on torque (load) and rpm. So machine is basically in the right gear.. ratio at all times. Like snowmobile or atv's etc. Light weight and rugged sysyem.

I was waiting for the Honda Talon to come out and was hugely disappointed because they failed to include a MANUAL LOCKING FRONT DIFF. I am SICK of all these fancy 4wd systems controlled by a computer and gives the driver no choice or control over it. Thankfully Can Am has included a manual diff lock at a flick of a switch. After studying the Honda Talon it sounds like a " smart 3 wheel drive" system to me. Uses the brakes to stop a tire from spinning and going to other front wheel. So it spends its time jumping back and forth between the front wheels instead of just locking them both in and digging. Screw that Im done waiting for Honda......Im all CAN AM NOW!!!

@@UTVonDemand Yep and so does Kawasaki. It seems only North American companies have been stuck on computerized 4wd systems and taking the fun away from the driver. I believe you might be misunderstanding the dif lock on the can am. It’s only locking rear tires, so you can run with one drive wheel so as not to damage your lawn. It does not lock front tires, it is still visco lock if I’m not mistaken.

@@ryanmcgraw8478 No they added a locker for the front end this year. Or at least the SPORT does....go watch video on it and they talk about it. It has the visco lock...but now has a extra switch for full differential lock. Great move on their part I think. Lots of people complain about the lag time waiting for visco lock to work and Polaris AWD to kick in. Good to have a full diff lock switch when you know ahead of time your going to need it.

@UTVonDemand
@UTVonDemand 6 жыл бұрын
mghought we're not sure about the laws in your area regarding vehicle wait for the trails. We feel 75 horsepower for this 1000 was respectable because it's the same claimed horsepower as the Polaris RZR 900 and it for 50 inch wide machine more horsepower could be a bit much.
@hooty6699
@hooty6699 6 жыл бұрын
I'll admit I'm a bit of a pedant, but respectable power for the segment is not the same as respectable power for the displacement. The RZR 1000 S makes 100 horsepower from it's available 1000 cc, which is very respectable. The Can Am X3 900 makes 90 horsepower from a 900 cc, which is also very respectable. But 75 horsepower from a 1K? Seems like they could have done that with 900 cc...

Stu, you are our favorite kind of viewer! We never hesitate to go into detail and we like it in the comments. We haven't reviewed a Kubota yet so its great to hear your experience with it. We try to answer as many questions as we can with a review but hearing real world experiences from owners add a lot to what we do. We're not totally sure why other manufacturers haven't gone with a centrifugal clutch. We have never cooked a Yamaha belt, yet, however we have only wasted a couple of belts in over a decade of testing ATVs and SxS. We typically shift into low range any time we plan on operating under load for a prolonged period of time under 15mph, or almost anytime we are towing or plowing. We will be pickingg up a new 2019 Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 next weekend. Perhaps we can acquire a Defender 1000 to review. If not, if you purchase one, please report back. Thanks for contributing.

Thanks I will be sure to do that. My buddy down the street owns a Polaris Ranger Crew XP 1000 2018 model now. Hope I got the name right? That thing is huge! He needs it as he building a tribe in his household...hahaha! Polaris to me has always stood out in one place. The ride. Most comfortable atv or sxs I've ever been in. The 4wd system doesn't lend itself to normal 4wd engine braking due to design..I know what its called but slipped my mind at the moment. It works, and even better with power steering nowadays as you know how a fully locked atv felt without power steering. I know early models only got some engine braking to the rear tires only if you blipped the throttle to keep the belt engaged...and I never was a fan of the one handle braking either..but somehow they worked overall. I know electronic braking has been around for those for quite some time now but have never really "rode" one hard enough to see if I liked it or not. Lots of power in that XP 1000! It's one of the main reasons I am looking to get a more recreational/work SXS this time around. So we can go on big trail rides in tough NE mountain trails and mudholes with my buddy and family. Kubota is great for straight utility work, and I am looking forward to the new sportier model coming out next year, and it has a gas engine! I kinda always wished they would offer a turbo diesel model for extra oomph as I like the Kubota diesel engines, and especially the fuel mileage they get. The Kubota being full on hydrostatic drive is basically a tractor engine in a SXS. Low hp of 24.5 in mine with 50lb ft of torque. Oh it will climb any hill I point it at and even climb at 1mph as long as there is adequate traction. No fully locking front diff on the Kubota series,,yet. They are just to slow for full on recreational driving and high range does not hold speed on any type of hills...bad if you need that quick boost of power or wheel spin to clean the treads to get up and over obstacles. Low range is a nose and teeth breaker...It will throw you into the dash or windshield if you take your foot of the fuel,,instant stoppage!! Sometimes I believe my SXS would be better served with just a tractor type hand throttle with foot control forward and reverse like a Garden tractor has. They do ride well however, and work very good. Shifting can be a chore for a new rider. Hydrostatic pressure and having a low, high, neutral gearbox can be tricky. Mine was a pain until I did a simple mod, and got some hours on it, and figured out how to make it work at its best. Its more like a boat gearbox. They do have a cable when you push the brake that is supposed to drop pressure, but its touch and go..That was the mod I fixed..The cable was held in place by a rubber grommet and it would fall out and the cable slack and movement made the pedal and system kinda useless. I just zip tied it all tight and the cable actually moves now..hahaha!..Other than that you can blip the throttle to shift, but shifting on hills is still the hardest when the weight of the machine is fighting it..Sometimes I still have no choice but to shut the machine off to get it back to neutral,,,,no start in gear feature....It needs refinement there...I like the JD 825i also but with a Can Am dealer and best friend down the street I go with his stuff....Well another long post...looking forward to your next test.
