szczin I have so much respect and love for these fish. It’s kind of contradictory to say that while fishing for them for sport, but I’ll always do whatever I can (like using the barbless trebles or in-line singles and fighting them with substantial drag) to ensure the best possible condition when they’re released....especially here in the canal when the tide is cranking I make sure they’re really kicking before releasing

@DanEvan6 жыл бұрын
As of right now I don’t....yet....I’ve spent the entire past year testing with 5 other guys to make sure the plugs can get beat on properly. So far haven’t had anything close to a failure or compromising of the plug body. The big thing for me and one of the parts I take very seriously is making sure the wood bodies are water sealed good and proper with the combination of epoxy and traditional wood sealer. Without that it doesn’t matter how pretty the lure is because once it takes on water it swells, the action goes to shit, and it will eventually split. I didn’t want to put my name behind anything that wasn’t proven.

Dan, did you upgrade the power handle knob on the Stella 14k in the video? The Stella 14k's usually come with the rubber power handle but I want to get the one you have but can't seem to find one online. If you could maybe give me a link to where you got the knob that would be awesome brother! Also great catch, and video!!
@DanEvan6 жыл бұрын
Hey man, like you the whole “feel” of a reel is made or broken by how the handle feels and looks. I never understood why the smaller Stella’s utilized very clean looking power knobs while the bigger ones got the rubber egg. And just like you I couldn’t find something that both looked right and wasn’t going to have issues with bearings or smoothness. I searched forever to find the one I have, and I’m glad that I can help you save the time and trouble. The knob I have is a Shimano Yumeya Type B from Saltywater Tackle. It’s been awesome and completes the look of the reel imo. Here’s the link bud! www.saltywatertackle.com/home/908-4874-shimano-yumeya-aluminum-round-power-handle-knob-l-type-b.html#/50-color-grey
@syed36946 жыл бұрын

@DanEvan6 жыл бұрын
Jack KILRAIN no shit? I’ve seen some horse macks, tons of squid, and got into a really solid night bite when they were busting the surface going after juvenile herring. They were spitting them up all over the rocks. A shallow diving white X-rap and slow swimming a sinking super strike little neck seemed to be the ticket

Hell yeah they’re here!!!!!!! FISH ON!!!
@roybarlow686 жыл бұрын
Hey dan, why not show how you upgrade the lures u use in the canal???
@DanEvan6 жыл бұрын
Roy Barlow I’m certainly not opposed to showing anything, it just didn’t occur to me to do so....I simply take a plug that I think could use a little help and upgrade it to suit my needs. In this case I took the plug I was using in the video and I cut the through wire out and removed the swivel, hooks, and rings. I drilled the tail out to accept another ounce of tailweight and re-sealed the lure internally. I then coated the entire lure in 4 coats of heavy duty epoxy. The swivel that came on the lure was a 150lb test nickel constructed Rosco swivel that I replaced with a 500lb test stainless steel Krok swivel. The wire itself is usually 304 or 308 stainless and I replaced that with a 316 marine grade stainless. The rings are 125lb Rosco split rings that I replaced with 198lb VMC stainless steel rings. The hooks were 3/0 4x VMCs and I replaced them with 3/0 6x VMCs. There’s a few little odds and ends I do as well but those are the main changes I make. I could show these changes in the future if there was an interest in doing so, but out of respect for the original plug builder, I didn’t want to make a big production out of it.

+Dan Evans could you give me some tips on striper fishing down there? I'll be down there for one day in July and am gunna be by the Bourne bridge. The only gear I have is a 1500 reel and a medium rod. Will that do? What lures should I bring? It'll be my first time ever and I'm just looking for action, not absolute trophies
@DanEvan6 жыл бұрын
Sumi can you specify on a 1500 reel and your rod? What make and model exactly

Dan Evan daiwa bg paired with a daiwa samuri rod that's medium action. The rod is part of a $25 dollar combo sold at dicks

Would bunker chunking or bait fishing work as effectively at the canal?
@DanEvan5 жыл бұрын
Saad Jaradat Bunker chunking is how I caught my first ever canal keep and was the more popular method when I was a kid. I remember my old man having about 30 pogies and chumming half of them. I think it’s still a viable option around slack tide for sure. Eels at night are also killer
@supremekarate16 жыл бұрын
Everyone says to you should wear Korkers when you fish the canal due to the slippery rocks there. But no one actually wears them? Do you suggest wearing Korkers when fishing the canal?
@DanEvan6 жыл бұрын
supremekarate1 I wear korkers, yes. I’d recommend getting at least the Buckskin models. I have the new Wraptr Korkers because my Greenbacks got chewed up pretty bad in one season. People typically don’t want to shell out the money for a pair of $150 Korkers....that is until you bust your ass and/or rod taking a nose dive off the rocks. I wear Korkers but just as important, I wear waders so that I can get off the rocks and onto the flat(ish) bottom. This allows me to make full back casts as well as providing more stability while I cast allowing for much further distance. It also gives you a stable platform for fighting fish. Now this isn’t always the case in certain spots or at high tide and standing on the rocks is unavoidable. That’s when I’m glad I’ve got the right footwear.
