Hello another well made video good content...would you say the 11' jigster is your goto large Topwater distance rod? Looking to build a rod for that purpose big Topwater stuff... considering the 11 jigster or maybe the 2-8 blackhole striped bass special...thanks gor the vid keep um coming...
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 4 жыл бұрын
trailbiker72 I was lucky enough to prototype the 11’ and new 12’ blackhole striped bass specials in both 2-8 and 1-6 and when it comes to all out distance those rods are not to be fucked with. I’ve owned a 12’ 2-8 century surf machine elite that was $1200 and the 12’ striped bass special would throw a 4.5 oz pencil just as far. Even the 1-6 throws my 4.5 oz longcast pencils easily without feeling lazy. So to answer your question the 11’ jigster is my go-to all around canal rod. I can throw pencils, swimmers, and do some light jigging swimming paddle tails etc. but the Striped Bass special is a long distance unit. If you go to Kil Song’s KZbin page he’s got some videos of me throwing some of my big pencils with the prototype 12’ 2-8 and 1-6. The 11’ is just as much of a weapon, just in a smaller package.
@doge_fishing
@doge_fishing 4 жыл бұрын
@@DanEvan great insight... i have a BH surf 2 H for jigging and a all around set up... just looking for a totally unnecessary self endulgent Topwater rod, did you feel the extra foot was worth the weight and handling trade off did you have same control? I'm 80% sure I'm going with the blackhole probably 2-8 just not sure if 12 or 11'... I've had Glenn build a few rods this year great products...
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 4 жыл бұрын
trailbiker72 the rod is so light that I honestly did feel like I had the control. When it comes to fish fighting you do notice the extra foot of rod, but it’s that compromise you take. You could always have Glenn take a 12’ blank and knock 6” off the butt and make her an 11’6. He loves doing shit like that. I will say that the 1-6 has a sweet spot of like 3.5 - 4 oz and is not your typical 1-6 that starts to feel lazy at 3-3.5 oz....it was this fact that swayed my choice of taking the 2-8 or 1-6 to experiment with and I went with the 1-6 and the reason for that was it’s so easy to get caught up in the heavy gear for the canal that we forget that for the past two years the main consistent bait was tinker Mack’s and squid so I wanted something that I could still throw Hogy soft plastics, minnow style plugs, and those smaller 2-3 oz pencils. I actually think the 1-6 would compliment the heavy II really well in terms of covering your weight ranges from 1 oz to a fucking cinder block with the heavy II. At the end of the day it just comes down to your style. If you like leaning into big plugs (4+ oz pencils etc) either one will get the job done but the 1-6 is going to be able to throw that lighter stuff when they’re on small bait or squid and the 2-8 is going to be more of a purpose built rig for putting big lures out there max distance. Just to give you an idea, I casted a factory 11’ 2-8 striped bass special against a fully custom ODM Evolution with titanium guides and the SBS was outcasting it by 20-30 yards because it’s just a faster stick that recovers insanely quick and the Evolution is a more moderate rod that excels in the battle.
@doge_fishing
@doge_fishing 4 жыл бұрын
@@DanEvan well pulled the trigger and had Glenn build a 12 1-6 cut down to 11'6" very encouraged by results "so far" early yet have not fully put it through its paces, but casting wise it excels with out having to really hammer a cast. Have to see on how it handels big fish only schoolies and a couple slots on it. But nice and light with the titanium guides. Looking forward to seeing what it can do.

@DanEvan
@DanEvan 4 жыл бұрын
So did you mean the 2-6 frontier or 3-8 oz?And honestly man, the Alps reel seats look cool, but for a Surf rod I wouldn’t recommend them. The only reason I got one on my jigster build is because this is my third one and they’ve all had the Alps titanium reel seats so it’s more of a “feel” thing for me. They’re heavy, they get slippery when wet, cold as hell when it’s chilly out, and if you get sand inside the locknut threads you can seriously mangle them. For a dedicated canal rod they’re decent, but anything that’s going to be used in the surf or sand, I’d go with something like the Fuji Ergo reel seat. Just giving my totally honest opinion.

Dan Evan Fishing , my fault I have the 10’6 3 to 8oz, an ya I’ll definitely take what you said into consideration, I mean I probably fished the Canal maybe 20 times tops, I’m usually fishing jetties, and the occasional beach’s in the Rhode Island area, and I been looking at the Alps reel seat for a while every since I had a Fuji reel seat give out on me and almost lost my Stella so I been looking at the Centra Lock knurled nut black alps reel seat, I’ve heard they get colder in the fall days but I’d rather have the cold hands and my Stella then warm hands an have to fish my Stella off the side of a jetty, what size reel seat did you end up havin to go with on your jigster that’s a hell of a setup how were you able to shave off 4 oz’s from your previous builds

Besides early June the ditch has absolutely sucked. All the Macks stayed out in deep water off Stellwagon, and all the pogies pushed through and the stripers have just been staying with them, oceanic sand eels, and butterfish offshore. Surfcasting from the ditch has been about as bad as I can remember and I’ve fished it and lived 2 minutes away for 15 plus years now.

@@jjsfishing8226 it would be just fine with sinking stickbaits. Floating stickbaits (especially some of the more finicky ones like Carpenters) just require a softer tip. Hey Dan. Have you ever tried using a 20' Saragosa paired with the jigster? Many recommend the 8k and 10k models. Wondering your thoughts on the 14k, having similar/same spool size and retrieve speed as the 19' Stellas. For both jigging + plugging. Thanks man for providing the knowledge with your videos.
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have and I think the 14k would pair beautifully with the jigster and be and an outstanding reel for the money for both plugging and jigging. I think those reels are going to sell like hot cakes for canal setups now that they’re offered in the 14k size like they were way back in the day.
@DanEvan
@DanEvan 3 жыл бұрын
And to elaborate I would 100% get the 14k over the 10k....you gain nothing by dropping to the 10k in terms of weight, it’s 24.3 oz compared to the 14k which is 24.7, and with the 14k you’ll get the same 53” per crank you get with a Stella which has so many benefits in the canal....from being able to burn a jig up and over the ledge and avoid snags, to planing a longcast sinking pencil to the surface with ease and keeping it up on the surface with minimal angler input on the reel, staying in contact with plugs and jigs as they sweep in the fast moving current etc. It’s an absolute no brainer if you ask me. For pairing with a jigster or any canal rod that’s going to be putting in some heavy work, forget the 8k and 10k and get the 14k all day.

@DanEvan

Difference was negligible to be honest. The return in performance isn’t worth the price of going to a full titanium torzite guide train on an 11’ stick. Hell the stripper guide alone is like $75. The biggest difference was the weight reduction and also really helped take away that tip-heavy feeling the jigster can have.

I think for an all around canal setup maxcuatro 50lb (40lb diameter) is awesome if you want to pay the money. It’s 0.32mm in diameter. That or Daiwa Samurai 55lb (0.36mm) are both awesome. The Daiwa is round and maintains its roundness so it doesn’t bite into the spool. Couldn’t go wrong either way.

Dan Evan Fishing Ah ok. So about the jigster being 50/50 split, have you ever casted and had the top section fly off into the water? That happened to my jigster twice when I took a trip up to CCC and it was embarrassing.. I was wondering since you have a 60/40 split jigster, how is that compared to the regular 50/50 split? Does it have its downside being 60/40? 70/30? I was looking into making it 70/30 if possible. Honestly I don’t mind 50/50 split, but in my experience 50/50 split rods shoot off the top section more often than a 60/40 or 70/30. Unless I’m just a bad caster 😅

Sup Dan what do you think about the slingshot 1328 by century rod paired with a 2020 Saltiga 10k for the canal ?
@DanEvan
@DanEvan Жыл бұрын
I think that would make for a great all around setup. I’d personally go for the 14k as it’s the same size as the 10k with a bigger spool and I think it would match better with the 11’ 1328. I had the 1328 before they introduced graphene into the rod blanks and the difference is night and day. The new one with graphene is such a better rod. The rod is kind of a Jack of all trades, master of none. It’s going to throw pencils 3-4 oz, 9” magic swimmers, stick shadds, and if you’re using paddle tail jigs it’s going to be fine with everything up to a 5 oz savage. The SS1329 is more of a dedicated jig stick. Same with the Paiva Century rod. But yeah for a single all around setup the 1328 with either a 14k or 10k saltiga, a high quality 50lb braid and 60lb fluoro leader will be an awesome setup.

@@l_ogi_l2039 So I would fish those jigs two ways if I were you. One would be like drifting a trout fly and just swinging it just off the bottom in the current. Just know that once it gets past you in the tide that paddle tail is going to make the bait rise so slow your retrieve down. Also don’t always try to make the longest cast. Try a fan pattern of long, medium and short casts. As far as yanking it off the bottom I just don’t think it’s necessary with a paddletail. You can lift the rod or snap it off the bottom quickly but anything more exaggerated than that is just yanking the jig out of the strike zone imo

@DanEvan
@DanEvan 3 жыл бұрын
It’s the challenge and skill required to catch these from land that makes surfcasting so fun. I worked on a charter boat for a decade and still fish with friends on boats but there’s nothing like bombing out a lure (especially one you’ve made) 150 yards and catching a fish from the rocks or beach. It’s rewarding in a way that boat fishing just isn’t. Look up Morningtide Fishing if you want to see the thrill of landbased fishing. Beyond that fishing from a boat in the Cape Cod Canal is illegal. Add in the element of 4-5 knots of current and the fights are incredible.

@@ogi-9346 So yeah that’s part of the reason I run PowerPro maxcuatro 50lb. It’s got the strength of 50lb test but with the diameter of 40Lb....but if you go back to some of my older videos you’ll see plenty of 30+ pound fish caught on everything from 30lb, 40lb, 50lb, or even 65lb. It all depends on what style of fishing I’m doing. My dedicated jigging setups tend to be much heavier than my dedicated plugging setups and then you have the Jigster/Stella combo that is my “all around” setup and for all of 2017 and 2018 I had 40lb braid on my Stella 14k....You just need to be aware that if you are tying a traditional palomar knot to a swivel that’s attached to your leader, that you’ve automatically reduced the break strength of your line by 1/3 because of that small choke point knot. So your 40lb test is really closer to breaking around 25 pounds and we’ve tested this thoroughly....as opposed to if you were connect you mainline to leader using an FG knot you’d be at about 95% break strength of the mainline so your 40lb test is the really more like 35-38lb. I run 10-12lbs of drag at the canal, up to a max of 15 pounds if I really need to turn a fish or get its head off the bottom (big canal stripers will eventually always take you to the bottom if you play them out and don’t put the boots to them and over the years and getting smoked a few times by fish of a lifetime I evolved my fish fighting style to be much more aggressive. I know the limits of my gear and terminal tackle just through time and experience and I really just try to fish the canal with the mindset “no fish stories” about the one that got away because of (insert excuse). So I gear up appropriately for my style and that’s a little on the heavier side if you were to ask most people who fish the canal, but I haven’t lost a fish due to tackle failure in as long as I can remember.

It was the fact that the tide was at a transition point and the current had not yet picked up. Those same fish with 4-5 knots of current at their backs, and they’re hyper oxygenated are a completely different animal than slack tide and the heavy setup is not only to stop them from ultimately taking you to the bottom which is a graveyard of crap that will bust you off, but it’s also to make sure I’m not stopping guys downtide from casting for 20 minutes because I’m using an inappropriate setup for the canal. I also don’t want to over exhaust the fish, and because after fishing there for 20 years, and getting my fair share of ass kickings on lighter setups, I decided nobody cares about the fish you almost caught. When I’m in the open surf I use a 10’ ODM evolution rated 3/4-5 oz, moderate action rod, a VS150 with 30lb braid and 40lb leader. The video posted before this one on my channel shows what a 40lb striper with the current at is back can do and that’s an even heavier setup.

Jason Rebello Show me the science behind that and I’ll take a look at it. I’d rather fight the fish aggressively, get the fish in, revived and released healthy and fast opposed to playing out the fight, letting lactic acid build up in their gills, and over exhaust the fish etc. I’m only using 10-12 pounds of drag, measured with a drag scale.

No sir . The quicker you can land that fish , get it revived and released properly the better . Mortality rates are high for lots of reasons . Guys playing with big fish on lighter setups and loose drags is one of those reasons. 10 + minute fights in the summer with high water temps is not good for these fish one bit . Sure the fish swam off but did it make it ? My opinion ✌🏽
