Yours in your hand read 3/8. So is it the 1/2 in or the 3/8 inch

I did this a while back. I don’t understand the 1/2 or 3/8. I used the hex. Nothing else.

That piece of "L" metal would screw into the van at latch point to make it hold better.

That piece of metal is the strike, what the latch latches onto. It may not be necessary in this application.

Yes. I haven't had any problems with them.

It doesn’t latch the best but I have no issues with any of it.
