Here is what I found with my F150. I noticed about 50% of the time the auto/stop wouldn't engage. Turns out if you put a little stress on the engine (IE run the air conditioner about 1/2 to full blast) this is just enough to keep it from engaging. Now living in the Deep South, you run your AC about 3/4 of the year. But that other 1/4 yeah, you got to manually disengage the system.

As a senior citizen I have a psychological twitch to my vehicle motor virtually stalling at a busy intersection with a long red traffic light. The anxiety must come from an archaic memory of when I was young and poor a stalled car meant calling a tow truck while surrounded by angry drivers. So I've been pushing the stop/start button every time I get into my 2018 Pacifica LX which is in itself annoying. Today I just followed your simple fix, which I suspect can be reversed just by putting the plug back in if/when I want to sell the vehicle without that tell-tale warning light on the dashboard. If KZbin would allow me to push the thumbs up button a thousand times in gratitude for your video, I would do so! BTW I asked my Chrysler dealer how much to turn off the start/stop system and they said at least $200!!
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for that amazing comment. I totally empathize with your psychological twitch. Lol! And you are correct to assume that plugging it back in should eliminate the tell-tale warning light on the dashboard, at least it did for me. As far as your Chrysler dealer charging $200, that's a first I've heard. Usually, they just refuse to do it. I wonder if something's changed.

The MAJOR problem with auto-idle (which isn't mentioned here) is the fact that starting your engine is the single most damaging activity to your engine. Why would you save a little in gas to greatly decrease the longevity of your engine? Does not make sense.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure how much damage is actually being done by starting and stopping the engine. What you say was more true of older cars. According to the manufacturer, the starter and flywheel and any other engine parts that would normally be affected have been modified and they suggest it shouldn't be a worry. However, there is definitely a few things that don't make sense here. I question the methods used to determine how much fuel this system supposedly saves. I think the manufacturers have done some mathematical gymnastics to make it look like the cars have a greater MPG than what is achievable in the real world.

That's awesome! Glad to help. But like I said, it's not a perfect solution but it's probably the easiest and cheapest. I recently ordered a device that is supposed to remember how you left the button when you turned the car off so it'll still be that way when you turn it on again. I wouldn't say it's cheap($100) but it might be better than unplugging a wire from your sensitive electrical system and hoping for the best. After I install it and test it, I'll make another video for you.

Right. And the reminder was when your vehicle stalled at an intersection because you forgot to hit that button at the start. Personally, the batteries in my 2018 were both dying from old age so I replaced them. Now the alert light comes on and stays on permanently and I get a message that the Stop/Start mechanism is broken so will not work. So I no longer have to hit any buttons (except start engine). Don't know why - maybe a mechanic did me a favor by disconnecting the system so it never kicks in by surprise.

The first government-ordered nag was the seat belt alarm. After that, it was too easy to add more. By 2019, my GMC has the seatbelt ping, another seatbelt ping for the passenger, auto stop with no A button, and the look in rear seat ping, all with no ability to disable. The transmission has like 9 gears in their attempt to match what Nissan uses (continuously variable gear), so going from 0 to 40 gets like 6 shifts. Worse, just starting up from a stop is high rev shift high rev shift ... 4 shifts to 25 just to get through the intersection... Less cylinders, more gears, auto stop trying to improve MPGs to satisfy insatiable government bent on destroying gas cars. You get the picture. Crummy driver experience all around.

Yea they are a false economy. Also the AGM batteries you need for start/stop are also about 2x the price of a normal one and don't last as long. In many cars (like BMWs) they need "programming" in as well when you swap it. You can't simply do it yourself, it's a dealer job with costs attached.

While holding it down, wedge a thin peice of plastic between that button and the console, so the button cannot go back up. It's jammed in the off mode. Been doing that for 3 years and works great!

I was going to try that today till I realized all my dash buttons including the turn on or off stop/start system button are all digital, so it is impossible to interfere with the electrical contact. To achieve the same goal, I would have to beg Chrysler to reprogram the OBC (on board computer), which they won't do without a $200 up front payment plus whatever they can cheat me out of while they have the vehicle secure inside. They even refused to honor a free reprogramming call back notice I rec'd from Chrysler head office. I think that's because Chrysler is now part of the Fiat family, which is trying to make a comeback in the US after a disastrous pull-out in the 1980s.

Ours broke all by itself so I didn't have to do this technique but this is an awesome information to have. The one thing that maybe others don't realize is that this system causes your car to start over and over again which seems obvious but the cost of the starter when it fails because of the excessive starting will cost you more than any savings you'll ever get in gas mileage by having the system enabled in the first place

It's important to note that this feature isn't primarily for you as the customer. This feature is so the car manufacturers can market their car as slightly more efficient than it really is. This bumps them up on the charts since technically it will burn slightly less in the "city driving" metric. Since all the manufacturers are so close in terms of fuel economy, this tiny bump causes them to gain a lot of places on the charts if they do it and your company doesn't, thus this annoying feature spread throughout the industry like wildfire. The manufacturer doesn't care about the longevity of the car as long as it makes it to the end of the warranty period. so i mean, if you dont care either, and also dont want AC/Heat while stopped, and dont care about a worn-out starter, and dont care about wearing out the bottom end faster, then by all means save a few bucks a month on fuel (potentially). But for people who want to keep their car for a long time and not treat it like getting a new phone every year or 2, then this feature is crap.

The entire “stop/start” concept was to manipulate the mpg calculation. Try a test, first you fill up your gas tank at the start, remembering where you filled up, set your trip meter, drive your trip, return to the same gas station, same pump. Calculate your MPG, then compare it with your vehicles mpg estimate. Bet it’s different, why because I think it only uses miles and gas consumed when moving. The Auto/Stop/Start does damage to your turbocharger by, ”hot shut down” which fries the cooling system to the turbo. It doubles or triples the starter wear and tear, and the starter ring on the flywheel. And that’s just for basics, I bet there is more to come.

On my Chrysler 2018 Pacifica there is one button to disable it but only temporarily. It resets to the default position of coming on automatically, I have to remember to hit that button right after the motor's start button. A Chrysler salesman told me that on some higher more expensive Pacifica models, that choice to turn the start/stop system is available on the settings screen. But not in mine and I have never heard anyone say they have that option on their settings screen so he was probably just trying to make me upgrade to a more expensive problem, not a resolution.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. As I was braking to a stop, before I completely stopped, I lifted up on the brake pedal and pressed down as normal. This did keep the engine running. @@alfredsoyemi6425 In my opinion having the engine quit and restart in traffic is dangerous and a safety concern.. Because of delay time response to continue driving. Plus short stop/starts are hard on the battery life. Especially in very colder states weather that puts extra strain on the battery. As cold winter weather takes much more power to start an engine. I'm sure no one ever mentions the most serious problem with this feature. When your vehicle does not restart after lifting your foot off the brake. My car has stopped several times at a stop light and would not restart. So I had to place it into park and turn off my engine, then restart it. My most scariest and most unacceptable occasion was when I was in RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC (stop. & go). My vehicle stopped, I quickly placed it into park and tried 3 times to restart before my vehicle restarted. I took it to the dealership and told them I do not want this feature and wanted it removed or disabled but was told it couldn't be disabled. I was told it was because my battery needed to be recharged. I am waiting for the first court case of injury or death for anything to change. My next vehicle will be based on not having this feature. Good luck, everyone.

Some day a victim of this totally dangerous phenomenon cooked up by engineers to sneak by increasingly impossible-to-meet EPA standards will try to exit their vehicle in road rage traffic conditions and get murdered. Then, maybe Washington incompetents will tell EPA idiots to relax MPG requirements so car manufacturers don't have to virtually cheat the EPA tests by using theoretical mathematical models.

It's so aggravating that they do these things to cars without having a referendum on them before. 2:42 I'm in a 2019 GMC Terrain which does NOT have the button, so I can never turn Auto Stop off. And GMC made their Auto Stop hyper-aggressive, shutting off each moment the wheels stop. As you say, very annoying. I roll up to a 4-way stop with nobody there, if I follow the law and actually stop, the motor dies and I want to start immediately. What is really bad is when I'm in the middle of the road trying to make a left and having to pause for someone, then try to dart across before the next oncoming car while people are fast approaching me from behind, and viola no engine! That's DANGEROUS. Other car videos looked at this and said the fuel savings are minimal to begin with, car makers were forced into this as a last-ditch effort to keep gas engines viable in the face of the D party trying to strong-arm the public into EVs they dont want.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 10 ай бұрын
I certainly agree with your assessment about the system being dangerous when making a left turn. I said the exact same thing in the video. But your narrative on why the car manufacturers are doing this is slightly inaccurate. The manufacturers were given a mandate nearly 10 years ago for all cars to get at least 35 MPG. But it was easier for them to come up with this feature than to actually create cars that get better mileage. All this feature does is allow them to do a few mathematical tricks so they can legally say the car gets better mileage even though it does not in real world conditions. It has far less to do with the D party and a lot more to do with corporate greed. But to be fair to the automotive industry, this auto stop start feature is not the only idea they came up with. You might have noticed there are practically no more 8 cylinder engines and a lot more 4-6 cylinder engines with a turbo slapped on it. This is a fuel economical solution while still providing the power when you need it. Also, no one is forcing electric vehicles on anyone. This all started when Tesla made electric vehicles that were, for the first time beautiful, powerful and useful. They started out making them so expensive that the car itself represented elite status which of course made everybody want one. Tesla could not keep up with demand which meant there was plenty of space in the market for other manufacturers. The public likes electric cars for some reason and the old fashioned manufacturers must now make them in order to keep up. It's quite possible that in a few years there will be no more combustion engine vehicles. And when that happens, I don't want you blaming either political party. I's just the free market at work.
@kthmiller1494
@kthmiller1494 4 ай бұрын
You are so wrong. Tons of stories of manufacturers being stuck with EV inventory they were subsidized to produce. Tons of evidence people do not want EVs and the myriad of problems associated with them. If a person wants an EV fine...but to mass enforce them on the public, especially without the infrastructure to support is crazy. Notice that Biden and Newsom along with most Dems are full on-board with this crap, So it is political. *BTW, Tesla's are a fine car if that is what a person CHOOSES for their lifestyle.
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 4 ай бұрын
To be fair, you're responding to a comment I wrote 5 months ago. When it comes to technology, 5 months is a long time. But I'm still not convinced that I'm wrong. I'm not sure what evidence you're referring to that indicates people don't want EVS. There is data showing a significant drop in sales of EVs but that's only because Tesla's sales are down and they hold such a large percentage of the market that it makes it look like the whole Market is down. But take another look. Every other EV company is skyrocketing. Besides, try not to think of it as a car, think of it as technology. There were plenty of people who didn't want smartphones when they came out. But over time smartphones not only dominate the market but they're pretty much the only phone anyone uses nowadays. In the early days of cell phones there was a significant lack of cell towers and other cellular infrastructure. Cell service was spotty and expensive, but as you can see that didn't stop the technology. Eventually, the infrastructure was built and onward we marched. I also don't understand what you mean when you suggest that EVs are being “mass enforced” onto the public. If EVs are somehow better for the environment (and I'm not saying they are) but if they are, then it would be the duty of the government to make them available to the public. Subsidizing companies to make them and incentivizing people to buy them is not mass enforcement. Finally, you said Tesla's were a “fine car”. I'm not exactly sure what prompted you to say that. I reread my comments and I didn't see where I said anything negative about Tesla's. In fact, I believe I called them “beautiful, powerful, and useful”. Please correct me if I'm wrong or maybe I misunderstood you. And thank you for your comment. I always enjoy intelligent conversations.

If you want to disable auto start/stop on your F150 (works on 2021-2023 models for sure, don't know about older models or the upcoming 2024 refresh, but I'm pretty sure its the same or similar.) Go into your infotainment system. Bring up Features. Bring up towing. Choose select default trailer. That's it. That's all you have to do. Don't buy any devices. Don't jumper the button. Don't disconnect the BMS from the negative lead on the battery. The truck will think a trailer is connected, but it won't cut off your backup camera, or give you any warning messages or anything like that. Plus you don't run any risk of voiding your warranty, or shorting your circuitry with some cheap Chinese "auto start eliminator," or by plugging in some trailer circuit test kit that isn't designed to be left in as you drive the truck every day leaving it exposed to the elements.

Yeh man, I read years ago (AAA magazine) that if you're not going to sit more than 3 minutes then you will waste more fuel restarting the engine than idling 3 minutes. Also you are drastically reducing the life of your starter (and other related components). The oil is so thin in small engines today that they get lubrication almost instantly, so I don't think there would be a problem as you would have in a big block 8 cylinder engine wearing because it takes longer to get oil to all the metal parts when you start the engine. Thanks for the info.

Might want to put some dielectric grease on those connectors to protect them from weather and dirt, in case you ever want to hook them back up.

The wire lets the computer know the state of charge of the battery. The SS system will not function with a battery that has a low state of charge. Removing the wire prevents the computer from having that information. Without that information, the system is deactivated.

the most ridiculous thing about stop start is that it creates unwanted wear and tear on the starting system /engine - and that potential cost far outweighs the tiny bit of fuel it may save when you stop for a few seconds....i hate it .

Biggest issue for me isn't the slight delay in the engine starting, it's turning off an engine that's already off and starting the darned thing up again! I pull up outside my house, wiggle back and forth a bit to get close to the wall, handbrake on, shift into park, press the button to turn the engine off ... and the engine starts!
@VantasticPacifica
@VantasticPacifica 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I had that issue too. When I stop to park, the engine shuts off. I shift into park, it turns back on then I have to turn it off. It felt so unnecessary.

On a Jeep Grand Cherokee, you can do the same thing by disconnecting the power connector to the second (smaller) battery that is located under the passenger seat with the main battery. You will get the same warning light that your auto start/stop feature has an issue.

Does this work on any car? Are all of these systems set up the same? I love that you can do that so easily. I am in the market for an suv so I will definitely check under the hood for this connection! Thank you so much for the tip!!

I'm hearing from other viewers it does not work in every car, though I'm pretty sure it works in every Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. Check out the updated video. I talked about a company that sells a product that gets rid of start-stop without risking the car's electrical system. it is vehicle specific so you'll have to check to see if they make one for your car. But so far it's been working out great for me and I feel comfortable recommending it.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGjPfpqHepqZeZI

I have a 2019 Kia StingerGT with that annoying feature and mighty tired of shuttin' it off. You gave me somethin' to look for on the battery and see if it's the same setup. Fingers crossed. I can live with the warning light on the cluster - I'll think of the A - as everything is A-OK.
