My daughter bought a 2012 Focus Titanium brand new and at 70k miles it’s on its 4th auto transmission and as of 2018 there’s a class action lawsuit. The rest of the car has held up well.

Actually, the car has aged well. But it hasn't had a major update in 9 years, so of course it's lagging behind models that revamped recently. Despite the crap automatic, Focus has been a good car since it's introduction in the US and I'll be sad to see it go. Ditto the Fusion.

Here in Argentina the Focus 3rd Gen came out in 2013, and then in 2015 the redesign version, I have to say that here is a very modern car. And the tech it has is still missing in the competition (the Cruze is the most advanced but here in Argentina the car doesn't have dual zone climate control, and the sedan doesn't have sunroof). The Focus overall still feels very modern, and what I love from it is the ride quality it has. But we won't have the 4th generation either 😔. Keep in mind the Focus is a little bit expensive, so it is not a cheap rental car in NO WAY here in Argentina lol

I bought mine new for just under $16k. That’s less than a comparable used car. I love the included CarPlay and sound system. It handles great too, it’s a fun car to drive. The power shift is fine honestly. There’s a way to drive them that makes it happy. Going back to a normal automatic feels mushy now.

I just rented one of these and drove 4200 miles on a road trip. There was rain storms part way and this car handled the entire trip like a champ. I ave 42 mpg. Plenty of room for 2 siutcases and a cooler and other items. The only complaint I could say is that it is a bit weak in acceleration form a stopped position. But I would not consider that a major complaint at all.

I have one of these 2014. The transmission drives me crazy. I had a new one put in at 60,000 miles and so far it's been "better". You have to train yourself to drive the car a certain way to stop the juddering. Drive it sorta like a stick shift. Everytime it changes gear press down on the gas a little. Honestly the best way to drive this car is hard, which suits my driving style. the wheel bearings have a tendency to turn to dust every 30,000 miles, I have some rust building around the front bumper and my head unit doesn't work. However, it drives really really well. Ride is firm but not harsh, turns into corners like a dream, steering is well weighted pre 2015 models. The engine is amazing and has been bullet proof so far. MPG is good too, 31mpg. I averaged 36 on a road trip to Florida. Personally if you was going to buy one of these, get a fusion instead......or a Sonatta. Forget about buying one new if you are set on one. Get a year old one for under $11,000.

I had a 2014 Ford Titanium as a commuter car in the greater Atlanta area. I just got rid of it a few days ago because I've had 3 clutches replaced, two transmissions and a current recall for emission problem which keeps your engine light icon on. I've been on a list since October 2018 to fix this emission problem. My Ford dealership stated they're waiting on a new gas tank. The car ran okay but every time I got fuel my Focus would stall out but eventually I was able to drive it. I never had to pay for any of the repairs but the inconvenience of not having transportation can make life a bit difficult. On the good side, you get a lot of options with this car, push button start, remote start, Sony 350 watt sound system, free HD radio, navigation, Sirius Traffic and Traffic Link, outside mirror ground lights, ambient lighting (several colors), etc. But the tragic dual clutch engine (DCT) isn't worth the headache.

Great reviews as always. 1 question I am curious about tho...Why is it always such a big push to update cars every year or totally refresh every 5 years or so. I think it sometimes takes manufacturers 5 years just to get and all the bugs worked out and have a solid, dependable car. They're always changing so much and so often that you never really have a solid car. I tend to buy cars that have had little changes for years (especially mechanical) and buy the last year model before a refresh as I feel that car is as good as it is going to get for the long run.

Same here, 2012 Titanium bought new with 130k miles, on the original clutch. Driving it like it's a stick shift (no creeping forward in 1st and planning shift timing) seems to make a big difference in the reliability of the transmission. Easily get 37-40MPG on the highway too. Needed a couple PCU flashes but overall a very low maintenance car

I have 2, a 2017 and a 2018. I have zero issues with transmission. I also had a fiesta with the powershift transmission. So I'm used to it. I think issues most people have with it are it makes noise when the forks are engaging the clutches. So people think there is something wrong and take it in to dealer. Its normal, Ford just did a bad job explaining the transmission. You basically have a manual transmission that you shift with an automatic.

I own a 2018 SEL hatch. My biggest regret is that Ford didn't offer a manual transmission option with this trim (common Ford!). The problem with dual-clutch transmissions is that it attempts to anticipate your next gear based on whether you're accelerating or decelerating. If you try to quickly transition from deceleration to acceleration you're going to find yourself in the wrong gear. It takes some getting used to but I've learned to live with it. I'm more concerned with long term reliability. Ford says they've worked out the kinks. I guess I'll find out. You should also mention that the 5 speed is only available with the ST and RS versions. It's still better looking than that fugly Civic. P.S. I'm averaging 36.3 mpg over 29,000 miles of mostly highway driving.

D Tay I agree, and I see your point. I just dislike that an American worker is not getting paid to produce an American vehicle. If I were to buy a Ford, then the money goes to the corporate arm and helps pay the foreign labor worker. And what will Ford corporate do with the profits? Outsource more foreign labor, which I simply disagree with. My Honda was made in Ohio. So yes I gave money to a foreign corporation, but I like that it also goes to an American worker who could certainly use the work.

There is a guy running Ford now by the name of Hackett. His prior experience is Furniture Manufacturing. Where does furniture manufacturing fall in terms of where it ranks in the United States in relation to the rest of the world? The last time I checked we were down around 14th in the world. So with that kind of experience you can see, can't you, how well-prepared he is to run an automobile company! I believe it is his intent to do for Ford what he did for furniture manufacturing.

Jeez, I'm spoiled in my 2018 Camry. I've driven plenty of recent Ford models as rental cars and I must say all their transmissions should be labeled as PowerSh*t. I've see this in the current Escape as well--there is NO reason a car should cruise on the highway at almost 3000 rpm. Yes, my Camry has an 8 speed with the 4 cylinder and it will cruise at 80 mph at 1900 rpm. It just shows how behind the times the Ford vehicles have become and what they could be but just aren't. Not to mention questionable reliability when compared to brands like Toyota and Honda. Thanks, but no thanks.

I knew a girl who had a 2014 Focus with the DCT trans.. It is comically bad, and I have no idea how Ford managed to get people to buy these cars with such a POS transmission. Shuddering from stops was the main disgrace if you ask me.. Other than that, the car IMO still looks fine, it doesn't need LED lights everywhere, halogen work fine and are easier and cheaper to replace. It's just too bad those transmissions were a driveability and reliability nightmare.

They were dirt cheap to buy. I have a love/hate relationship with mine. Bought a 2017 SE sedan in late 2017 with the 1.0L turbo and 6 speed manual. $5000 of msrp. Paid only $14.5k for a new car with dual zone climate control and four wheel disk brakes. 30 city and 40 highway on 87. I've gotten as high as 44mpg all highway. Gotten more than 500 miles per tank a few times (12.4 gal tank). The engine is amazing and has far more power then you would think. The turbo makes it so I don't have to downshift constantly on grades. The trans is just ok. The shifter feel is sloppy and imprecise. The mazda manual 6sp in the 2008-2010 Fusion is much better. The trunk is decent sized. The folding rear seats are useless, it has a tiny opening and the seats don't lay flat. The engine is so lightweight I have to be careful or it spins tires constantly. Mine also makes a thunk when dumping the clutch or when the traction control that 2 dealers have said is fine. I'll replace the motor mounts myself and fix it one of these days. I like the fuel economy too much and am keeping it for now.

I bought a very-low-mile used 2015 SE Sedan with the 5spd manual. Let me just say, soon I'm heading out of Ford and finding something with some power. Turbo or more cylinders. I've been driving compacts all my life, stick shift all my life, and put 165,000 on a '03 ZX3. Although my current 15 is a good overall car, it's so typical Ford (squeaks and rattles, buzzes, uneven panel gaps, lousy throttle response, unrefined engine, lots of plastic, drum brakes, small brake rotors, thin paint, bad sounding door slam, etc. etc. etc.). Okay, I didn't spend that much money for it and that was the point. I'm doing better financially and I'm moving on. It's a mechanically sound vehicle and does easily 42-44 mpg highway, hasn't given me trouble. Just too many small things adding up to dissatisfaction. My former ZX3 on the other hand, was an analogue go-kart (cable throttle, hydraulic steering, excellent light chassis). Zero electronic nannies, not even ABS. That car was fun, in spite a measly 130hp. The Audiophile CD player was AWESOME sounding.

Neon's were trash (the only exception being the turbocharged SRT-4), even though the 1st generation did change the game with styling that was way ahead of its time. Cavaliers/Sunfires weren't terribly unreliable and generally were the cheapest new cars you could buy in the 90's and early 00's, they were just buckets of bolts that felt thrown together basically. Head gaskets and timing chains were an issue on some, but Neon's were worse mechanically. Escorts felt cheaply built just like Cavaliers/Sunfires but at least they were fun to drive (similar to the Focus), but they had timing belts that most people didn't replace and fragile automatic transmissions that usually didn't hold up long if you didn't change the fluid regularly, so they didn't tend to be as durable as the J-bodies and most people just threw them away.

Never had any interior creaks or rattles even after almost 7 years of ownership and over 80k miles. Still had a better ride and handling than some newer compact cars I've driven since. I wasn't aware car designers had a "rental design" in mind. So there's a template for a "rental car"? I also don't understand how a car design looks "cheap". I can understand it in terms of material but not in terms of the design of a vehicle. This a perfect utilitarian vehicle and just because it is not comparable to an Aston Martin doesn't mean it is a "cheap" car. Not everyone can afford $40k plus sedans. And Ford is definitely not "behind the times". A more luxurious, expensive vehicle is not always best or what is necessary. I think this review could've been more objective without the necessary "rental car" comparison as it offers no value for someone that is genuinely interested in what the actual car has to offer in terms of the mechanics, ergonomics, efficiency, cargo space, reliability statistics, etc. Rather than your "feels like" you should focus (pun intended) on what the vehicle has to offer.
