This was a great detailed comparison between the 2 forks but I wonder if you guys tested the DVO Diamond? That fork to me hands down has the best small bump compliance. I have owned multiple Fox and Rock Shox forks and shocks and in my opinion Fox feels great when its brand new of after a rebuild but requires a lot of maintenance. Rock Shox may not feel as great but they don't need the constant maintenance like Fox. In my opinion DVO is the best of both worlds, they make solid performing forks and shocks and they don't require a ton of maintenance. DVO small bump sensitivity is by far the best IMO due to their OTT. It does require lots of tinkering to get the sweet spot but once your fork or shock is dialed its a beautiful thing. But saying all that the main reason why I only run DVO on all my bikes is their customer service. You can find tons of set up info on their website but if you have questions you can call them up and the guy who picks up the phone will be a hard core mountain biker who will know his shit and help you answer any questions. Its almost impossible to get someone on the phone from Fox or Rock Shox and if you are lucky enough to get a live person, it will be a customer service rep who probably doesn't even ride a mountain bike.

So I had the chance to compare both 2018 forks (the 36 RC2 and the Diamond Boost) for an entire day of DH laps. The 36 has about 15 hours of previous riding on it and the Diamond was brand new. Setting the forks up as closely as possible, this was my conclusion. The 2018 Fox 36 offered small bump that was just a hair smoother than the DVO (even with their OTT adjusted on the most sensitive setting.) Was it smooth enough to completely discard DVO? Not at all. It was still leaps and bounds smoother than a 2018 Lyrik. What the DVO offered that the Fox 36 didn't was outstanding midstroke support. As noted in this video, the 36 had better midstroke support but I feel they would agree when I say it wasn't as supportive as it should have been. Was the midstroke support of the 36 horrible and should you swap it for a DVO? Not necessarily. What it all comes down to is preference. If you value midstroke support most and want a good amount of small bump? Get the DVO. If you want the best small bump in the industry and decent midstoke support? Get the 36. If you want either, get the Lyrik.

Why does no one just put forks on a shock dyno? It's always "it feels a bit softer" or "it feels it has a bit less friction" An hour on a shock dyno would tell you everything....... #objectivedatatoo
@bewimotos5 жыл бұрын
a dyno wont have the same effect on a real ambient, actually also helmets they made provide impact test but they dont seem to get to rotational impacts on a dyno. so a dyno will help so much. but not at full scale.

I have both..the 36 in 170m and the lyric in a 160m non boost and ran them on the same bike 2016 enduro..can't even compare the lyrik is way smoother and more responsive ..the 36 has way to many useless adjustments and know matter how many times I try to adjust to find the sweet spot I can never find it.. where the lyrik is simple and just a few clicks to open or close lsc makes a world of deference ..plus the 36 started creaking after 2 months of trail riding which has to be sent out to fox for warranty and that to me is garbage!

It sounded to me like the Lyrik was just less progressive and needed some volume spacers to get an apples-to-apples comparison. I think this is much more readily noticed than differences in shimstacks. Is this possible? Or how was this controlled for?
@sebstott35737 жыл бұрын
There's a more detailed article about how i tested - link in the video description - that explains exactly this. Cheers.
@iotarask777 жыл бұрын
yes, adding volume spacers to the Lyrik provides more plush initial stroke (and with it less arm pump). For me, in combination with not too low air pressure, works perfect over roots, plus it doesn't bottom-out on jumps due to progression. If it still doesn't suit the rider (which I doubt) he can sent it to a tuning shop to adjust the HSC shim stack. I've got the "old" 2017 fork. The 2018 even has DebonAir which further smoothens the initial stroke. For me this review is too one-sided.
@sebstott35737 жыл бұрын
The air spring in the 2018 Lyrik is actually identical to that in the 2017 model - they've just added the Debonair badge. It's got a fair bit less negative volume than the 36, which partly explains the slightly firmer off the top sensitivity and reduced mid-stroke support. You're right, I could've added even more volume spacers to the Lyrik (I run 2.5), but this would've made it harsher on larger hits - it already has a more sudden and unpredictable ramp-up and rebound in the final 25% or so of travel, and gave me more hand pain than the Fox, so whatever i did to add more support would've made this issue worse. Yes, i could have got a re-valve too, but that would be an unrealistic test - how many consumers get their forks re-valved. I assure you this test was in no way one-sided. It's also worth saying that the Lyrik is a genuinely excellent fork, it's just not - in my honest opinion - as good as the new 36.

Great review! When I tested last years RockShox Yari against a fox 34 I found pretty close to the same. It sounds like for 2018 Fox is really trying to refine their Forks, while RockShox is more or less just sticking with the same.
@rogerneilson8157 жыл бұрын
I understand the need to compare as evenly as possible, but perhaps setting them up as identical as possible hindered one of them in the test. Wouldn't it be a better test to set them up as best as each can be setup, to the fullest potential possible and then see what's better? Maybe 36 still wins, but maybe the 36 settings on a Lyric make a Lyric harsh on small bump and dive easy. I put volume spacers in a Pike n lowered PSI a touch and it's far better than when I ride on Fox 36 as dialed in as I can get it. Both are older models ('15 & '14) but they each have different potentials and the Pike had more. Just needed to tune it to find it.

Luke Luke, It was a 2017 Fox 34 Performance. I feel that if you look at spec sheets, the Reba may seem more in line with the 34; but dollar for dollar, and real-world performance, the Yari is more on par with the Fox 34 Performance. I'm sure a pro racer would feel a larger discrepancy in performance, but to the average rider, they are pretty much the same level.

@Mhblabla7 жыл бұрын
As others pointed out they should be reviewing lower end forks too. Also the way he describes the Lyrik I could talk the same about Sector - too much dive, neglient small bump sensitivity then too much of a dive on bigger hits. Which I also remember hearing in Pike vs Fox 34 comparisons. So I'm starting to believe this is a Rock Shox thing across all their forks. If that's the case, I'm never getting a RS again coz I have it now and hate it how it performs.
@AdrianSchwizgebel5 жыл бұрын
What you are mentioning for the Lyrik (harsher in small bumps but rushes through travel too fast) might have to do with low/highspeed compression setting, too much lowspeed and too little highspeed compression. And this is the reason why I‘m going to upgrade my Yari with the RC2 and not the RCT3 Charger unit. Equivalently there would be the GRIP2 from Fox. I‘m happy to own a Yari, since it has the same chassis as the Lyrik and that can’t be wrong for a >100kg rider like me. Off course I wouldn’t mind the Kashima though...

Thanks for the very good Review. I wonder though why you didn't try to put one more token into the Lyrik and reduce the air volume slightly. That should increase small bump sensitivity and should provide more strength/support when near to bottoming out. That's what I did with my Pike and I am pretty happy with it. Also you can retune the Lyrik like the Boxxer to allow lighter riders to shift the adjustment ratio of compression and rebound. Didn't try out a Fox tough. What do you think?

IMHO both of those forks lack a very important feature- hydraulic bottom out, and while FOX at least has nice shim stack, the RS is a bit lacking in the damper department. Same for the Pike and 34, but there- the Fox doesnt have as nice of a shim stack. Manitou mattoc has all of those features, and with a bit of work- it performs just as well if not better as the 2 above, for the 1/2 of the price (just lube it with Fox gold or other similar, optional- install SKF seals like in pike or 34- but those are not even close to evil genius in terms of keeping out elements)

Half of the price ??? Check the website : it's 999€. I've just bought a new Yari for 550€ here in Europe. And if you don't want to bottom out with your Rockshox, just install some tokens, that makes the fork more progressive...

Fox Service sucks. Fox refuses to service shocks past 5 years of age. Parts are next to impossible. Not even the LBS will service them after 5 years. I was told it would violate their agreement with Fox. With RockShox you can service them a while longer as i already have experienced. I liked the ride of my Fox better. After being burned I am done with them unless its stock and the only choice. I would like to get a little more than 5 years on a thousand dollar investment. Especially if I hardly used it.

At $3,000 or more I expect to get more than 5 and serviceability after. I would have tried to rebuild the shock my self but the tool I need to rebuild it with I could not purchase. IFT charge tool. I rebuilt the pike for $35, and bought a spare set of parts in case they are not available later. lets just hope when I need them I remember where I put the parts. As for appliances and AC's they are all related and owned by each other in some way. There is no good one now. Autos manufactures telling people to do oil changes at 5k or 10k just insures a shorter life as well as a shitty used car market. I agree all big corps want us to throw everything away every 5 years or less.

Reviewer needed to play with different spacer configs and other settings on both forks in order to give a complete review.

Great forks, but man, they are very expencive! Not shure these two forks ofer double performance over other forks in this category in the price range about 600+- euros.

If you have 1,000 pounds to spend, spend 250 on a custom damper tune and save the rest for something else. You’ll have a better fork than anything that comes stock.

@northman777 жыл бұрын
No need for a test... Fox is obviously better! Did you ever see insinde of these 2 fork brand? One is made of plastic, the other have the same kind of part you can found in a motorcycle or a snowmobile suspension.

It wins on damp ning but with fox you have to do maintenance quite often as o keep it feeling good
@northman777 жыл бұрын
Durrant Miller i need to do maintenance of my rock shox sid every 3 weeks, same for my friends with rs-1 and they feel rough, the oil inside is gray and totally past due, bushing look overheated. Fox 32-34 is every 2 month and still feel great.

Jérémy Drouin Naa had both.. My pike is just plain better for me.. Less fiddling, less maintenance and plain just works!

Trevor Bohnsack me and my (u23 world cup) training partner can't agree on that... ;)
@flow2tech7 жыл бұрын
Jérémy Drouin That's great for u and ur trainer.. I don't train.. I ride trail, hit huge gaps, steep rock rolls and crank it out on the north shore and Whistler... Also drink a shit ton of beer.. The pike is a real mountain bikers no bullshit fork.. It also doesn't treat lycra wearing very well! 😎🍻💪

Rockshox blew it so bad with the old judy line.... id never sell or buy a rockshox product. I might be old school but after endless hours in the shop fixing blown judys and sids its like a severe allergie when i see a rockshox.

I personally prefer dvo and suntour for single crown forks, I am not a fan of rock shox or fox...
@ditofuhrer91007 жыл бұрын
yup but sadly only the big two are widely available in my country, sr suntour only abailable as oem for low end bikes :(
@antonparis79397 жыл бұрын
Dito Fuhrer I always buy forks online, I'm never happy what comes with the bike. I'll be getting a new frame and will be using my marzocchi forks until I can afford suntour durolux forks, they are great forks for the price

SOMETIMES GIVE ME LAUGHT WHEN THEY TALK AS MUCH MONEY AS IF IT WAS VERY EASY TO DO IT. Durability and reliability over time (it is what interests us more than those who work hard to earn the money) .... beyond that if one is more "slightly more sensitive with small obstacles". Quite a difference of money between one and the other. And of course there are other brands that can be just as good, or even better, as far as performance is concerned.
