I have a 2017 Africa Twin dct. And everything you said was true. You do get used to it, you do get lazy and pretty much never shift. In sport 3 mode I found it downshifts a little sooner on deceleration. Off road it’s great, impossible to stall, and usually has you in the right gear. I’ve had mine for over a year and I love it.

One has to engage one’s brain and there is little one can’t do with the DCT vs manual transmission. For instance, approaching a car stopped at a light. Not enough engine braking was the complaint. Well just push the (-)minus button to down shift as many times as you wish and you’ll get the engine braking you want. Just like the manual where you downshift to slow. The principle is the same. It’s just that the mechanism by which it is accomplished is different. When in “D” mode, it takes a good twist of the throttle before it will downshift. In “S” mode, the degree or distance one has to open the throttle is much less before it drops into a lower gear - two if you give it near a max twist. The number of gears it will drop will vary according to the speed one is traveling. So in “S” mode, while it shifts up at higher RPM’s, throttle input also a factor in determining the RPM’s at which the up shift occurs. The same holds true for “D” mode. RPM level at the point of up shift is determined by the amount of throttle input. It takes more than just a few hours of riding before one becomes familiar with the nuances of using the DCT. But once familiar with it, it is a joy to use and why more and more riders are buying and recommending the DCT.

Have had 5 DCT Honda's since 2010 and over 100,000 miles with no problems, it doesn't get boring with so many options to change gear but you need to do miles to see if it suits your riding style, the manual is still a great bike but they always get smoked by DCT at the lights 😁

I got the 2016 DCT - Used it for daily commute through city traffic using Sport Mode 2 and never been happier. My only complaint is on off-road, it handles great but when you get into the more technical hard terrain and rough ruts and you accidentally give it a HARD twist of throttle when the terrain throws you off your line, you can’t kill the engine power by grabbing the clutch - This one weakness has caused me to have 3 falls that could have been saved had I had the clutch and for me and is the only reason I might NOT consider getting another DCT for mostly off-roading use. But for light duty off-roading, you can’t go wrong with this bike!

I've just purchased the NC700 DCT, I'm struggling a bit with the aggressive engine braking. I find that not being able to pull the clutch in is a bit scary... Especially if there's icy patches, generally if I spot ice I'd pull in the clutch and 'coast' over it, what I'm finding on the DCT is that I instinctively let off the throttle which then produces (dangerous?) engine braking.. did you experience this? If so, how do you overcome it?
@devdathn6 жыл бұрын

As you well know Mr C, I love my AT DCT! The AT choice was partially down to watching your vids of you on yours. The DCT was because I was coming back to biking after 15 years off a bike and the ease of use was very appealing. I understand hardened bikers might scoff at an automatic bike but it’s perfect for me. They also need to remember that the nutter that is Dave is still nestling in the man cave ready for when you feel like getting your gears on!! 😉 I think you’ve decided to keep your AT now which makes perfect sense. As someone about to get an AT, I have been put off DCT due to a lot of issues with car dual clutch and automated manual transmissions. The added complexity of computer aided clutch, throttle and gear control tells me that it's not if, but when it needs a visit to the dealer, just look online at VW DSG feedback and warranty issues as one example. I realise however that a wet clutch may make a difference. I won't be commuting, just leisure riding. I would imagine that younger riders might think "He who hesitates is lost" while the more greyer haired among us might think "Act in haste, repent at leisure". Am I wrong thinking what is not fitted cannot go wrong, or is this mind-set going to deny me from benefitting from great Honda technology. Thanks Crumble for the great insight, cheers, still undecided!

I have a 2016 DCT not quite as many settings as the 2018 model but still fantastic, I couldn’t decide between the standard or DCT so I paid the near 500 GBP and went on the AT adventure weekend and tried both, my background is off road both trails and motocross and I loved the standard as soon as I got on it and had made my mind up within 30 minutes but on the second day with the DCT it was unbelievably easy to ride both on and off road the second I got home I ordered a nice shiny new AT DCT and have enjoyed every mile I’ve put on it and I turned down a test ride on a 2018 model because just like you I would be thinking of swapping mine for a new one and just haven’t got the money. Great Vid by the way summed up the DCT very well, the one thing that you will notice if you do by a DCT version is you end up going a lot faster that you think you are purely because it so smooth, your not changing gears, the throttle position is constant when accelerating that your speeding before you even noticed it.
@TheCrumble6 жыл бұрын
Great comment Rog and you did a very clever thing taking both bikes out on that weekend. I would love to do that weekend adventure but the price puts me off I'm afraid. I was mightily impressed with the DCT and if I was going to change bikes, I would deffo go down the DCT route.

I,ve had mine a month, box is brill when you get used to it, sometimes you think maybe i should have got a manual when it does a change that you don,t want, but you have a full manual mode , so you go to that which works better than a conventional box, but after 3 or 4 changes you are back in auto coz the auto is so easy which is the clincher. Tip if you ride in manual just touch the button, don,t ease the throttle, gear is already engaged, it,s an awesome smooth change. Also sport 1 is like i ride normally, drive is ony good for slow and flattish roads.

@@TheCrumble It works superb, you won,t be in manual for long but on a twisty road if you are riding hard it,s good to have the option! But sport mode 3 does it for you! I've had a couple of these and spent a long time with the manual version too. Go back, take it out again and start with full manual mode.....this way it won't intervene in any way (apart from selecting first when you stop). This way you can hit the rev limiter, thumb it down the box and feel the slipper clutch working - essentially you get lighting quick and smooth shifts that you are completely in control of. Still believe that the DCT is the better variant. Did 9 countries in 2 weeks a few months ago on a manual cross tourer and a mate was on a DCT Africa. We swapped bikes and I realised just how much I miss DCT - it's brilliant

Mapperley Top is just up Somersby for me. I tend to keep away - lots of undesirables up there! ;)

@@TheCrumble Mutton dressed as Mutton down that end of Mapperley Plains.. I just whizz past all nonchalant-like, Visor down as you can never be too careful, and then onto the back roads, Woodborough and Lambley and points east. But anyway.. you are right in what you say about Vertu. they're great. Did a quite stupendous deal for me that I just couldn't resist.

Me again... heading up to peaks this thursday - 2 hrs away for me. Ive got Sir William Hill Rd and Tideswell lane from your videos. Any others that are rocks/gravel rather than December mud? Cheers
@TheCrumble6 жыл бұрын
Erm...let me check the map. There's one called Black Harry Lane which is very close to Tideswell Lane. It's next to a working quarry and it's nice and wide and just gravelly. Might be a fair few puddles there this time of year but all good fun! Enjoy your ride matey!!!

@@TheCrumble did those three trails today on my ATAS. My first time off road. Fantastic little "roads". Only dropped the bike once... snapped brake lever and handguard. Oh well. I'm hooked now...

Great to hear back from you David! Your attitude is spot on I think. I came off early on in my AT career and smashed a few bits but decided to crack on. It adds such a lovely dimension to the riding experience and I just try to enjoy it now and not worry about how fast I'm going or whether I should be sitting or standing etc. I think of myself as a motorcycling rambler haha! Great to hear you've had a good day and appreciate the message! Ride safe!

At the bike show last year I got lucky with a no-show place withing 5 minutes of arriving at the off road arena. The only bike available was the DCT Africa Twin. First time I'd ridden an automatic bike and it did have me reaching for the non-existent clutch lever. I built up enough confidence to give it a (small) handful on the step-downs and get a thumbs up from the instructor but I wouldn't buy one, probably because I'm even older and more set in my ways than you Mr Crumble. I like changing gear.
@TheCrumble6 жыл бұрын
I like changing gear to be fair. But because I do such a lot of city riding I do get a bit sick of changing gear!
@HoraceFogsworth6 жыл бұрын
Thankfully I don't have to spend much time in the city, work's less than a mile away so I cycle or walk. ON my CBR250 I have to change gear a lot but the controls are so light and easy I can feel like a riding god wherever I go without attracting unwelcome attention. Or so I tell myself.

The thing I have with automatics is it's always great to ride one for the first little while. But when a month or so passes I'll start to get annoyed with the shifting moments and such to the point I just wanna crash the thing. I imagine the DCT would be no different long term. Can you re-use your mods on this at, It's not a ATAS is it? I know my own crashbars won't fit a dct.

Not being able to kill engine power with the clutch is a big problem, especially in an emergency where it’s possible to grab the front brakes without allowing the engine revs to settle.
