Mainstream buyers will stick to Toyotas and Hondas because they don't know better. People who had a Mitsubishi will stick with Mitsubishi - sure it is not as luxurious as a Mercedes but reliability is great. Add to that a class-leading AWD system which is just as good as Audi or Subaru that is grossly understated, and you have a great overall package and value to top it off.

I would agree if it didn't have a Jatco CVT transmission.

Hi you forgot three things. 1. Awesome head room for a tall person. 2. And the undercarriage what is the height. 3. As well as the seats lay a lot falter in the back and for a overnight camp out while traveling you have plenty of leg room for a perfect nights rest. : ) That is one think I look for because it's costly for hotels.

We own 2 Subarus, and Subaru always brags about their Symmetrical AWD System because it is always on. All 4 wheels always have power to them. It doesn't have different modes like SAWC, or VW's 4Motion. Does SAWC operate the same way when in Auto mode? Do all 4 wheels have power to them or does the system turn on and off as needed? Thank you.
@Trades46
@Trades46 6 жыл бұрын
S-AWC does power all 4 wheels - it is more computer controlled than Symmetrical AWD but it maintains torque to the rear wheels for torque vectoring, which is its key selling point. The car can brake the inside wheel when cornering and literally 'pivot' the car around the inside wheel which makes the car feel more planted. Symmetrical AWD does not do this. On the Eclipse Cross has 3 modes on S-AWC - Auto, Snow and Gravel. So yes AWD is always engaged, but the proportion of power distribution is left to the computer to decide depending on the driving mode & conditions.

@@Trades46 that's not at all true about the symmetrical awd from Subaru. They have torque vectoring as well, braking the inside wheels. The VW's and many cars like it have halidex systems that run fwd on the straights and then add power to the rear wheels around corners. Subaru brags about their AWD systems because they are amazing. That being said mitsubishi is no slouch in the AWD department. The evos like the last iteration the 10, has an awd system that still competes to this day and is 10+ years old. Mitsubishi has taken a lot of that system and transplanted it into their newer suvs. Is one system better than the other? I'm not really sure how to quantify a lot of the merits on what makes one better than the other. There's many areas of comparison, and a lot of variation based on things like open or closed differentials etc. I will say, I personally prefer AWD systems that run all the time compared to halidex systems like in VW or Audi, hyundai, Mercedes, Honda etc. Not to say that theirs are bad systems, but there are instances where there is lag between the sensing of road/traction slippage and the rear wheels being powered. It's much quicker with systems that are constantly getting powered... on the other hand halidex systems will inherently be a bit more fuel efficient as they're only powering the front wheels unless sensing slippage or going around turns. Then if you look at something like a tesla which has a computer system running each individual wheel and monitoring the wheel every 1 thousandth of a second, that's about the best traction control system in a production car today. However I've never seen tons of videos or in person how a tesla handles on loose gravel or the snow. I have seen how Subaru handles quite amazing in the snow, loose gravel is insane with Subaru on how well it handles. Mitsubishi again is no slouch in this arena either, both brands take their info from their rally cars and implement them into their production vehicles. I've seen Subaru towing trucks out of the snow, driving past duel wheel trucks up hills, and I've owned a wrx so I have my own similar experiences to back that as well. I've no doubt mitsubishi can keep up even if it falls behind in this area, just giving recognition to its Lancer Evo lineage alone. Those cars were well known to be able to handle similar conditions and was originally the direct competition to Subaru. But let's not misrepresent Subaru or mitsubishi and speak with an unbiased perspective using incorrect information. Subaru does have exactly the same torque vectoring systems, some have open or closed differentials which also makes a difference as well. I'm not sure what kind of differentials system mitsubishi runs, and both are running their awd system all the time hence why the mpg is a bit lower than other similar vehicles who run the halidex systems. It comes down to preference for a lot of it. Some people like having the better mpg and only need to use the awd when they need it if they're in warmer climate for most of the year for example. Others want their awd systems to be at peak performance all the time in wet and cold climates or dealing with winding and steep roads. At this point you also start to get into semantics as most awd systems should suffice for about 90% of the driving most people use their cars for. Though many German brands use these halidex systems, these cars are built and tested in the harsh cold climates of western Europe and they do have a premium product for most people. These differences are only noticeable when pushing the cars to their limits in the worst of conditions which most drivers don't see practically ever in their cars. I would prefer something like a Subaru or mitsubishi if I'm on a rally course in snow or loose dirt, but a VW or Audi will do just fine for daily usage and they are levels above what any fwd only systems will do in the snow or dirt. Lastly, you can have the best awd system in the world, but if you have crap or incorrect tires you'll never have the proper traction. If you have summer tires on your awd mitsubishi during the winter, and have winter or all seasons on your fwd car, that fwd car will run laps around the awd car because the tires are not made for the winter season. You'll slip and slide all over the place and no matter how good the awd system is, it will not make a difference. The summer tire rubber will become hard and not flexible and you'll have no traction whatsoever. So first and foremost is having the proper tires for the proper climate and season as the tire is what contacts the road 100% of the time. From there, the fwd vs awd systems then make the next differential. After that it's the different kind of awd systems compared to other awd systems that propel your car to the next level of traction.
