For 2018 Mitsubishi resurrected the Eclipse name for a compact cross over designed to sell on style. But is there any substance? Yes and no.

We bought two new 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring with S-AWC (top trim in USA) last October. We chose it over the Toyota Rav 4 XLE, Honda CR-V EX-L, Subaru Crosstrek Limited, Hyundai Kona Ultimate and some others. In the end we was down to the Eclipse Cross SEL Touring, Kona Ultimate and Crosstrek Limited. We chose the Mitsubishi because it had the most features for the money, high ride height (like Subaru), dual pano roof, power folding side mirrors, car telematics, remote start, dual zone climate control, leather, 710 watt rockford fosgate audio, adjustable rear seating, led lighting inside and out, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, heated front seats, all the driver safety aids, 10 year warranty (Hyundai had too), plus we have owned 5 Mitsubishis and they have been flawless with reliability. We have also owned several new Hyundais and Kias and had good luck with all them (2 Kias, 3 Hyundais) but the 2013 Hyundai Elantra which had suspension clunking issues, steering rack issues, timing belt whining on start up and had to be replaced, would get stuck in park and shift lock issue and would not start and a few other things. After just under 2 years of owners ship we traded it on the 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT AWC and loved it the 3 years we owned it and not 1 issue. When I drove the Rav-4 it seemed buzzy and I did not care for the interior it was plain looking. Plus Toyotas 2 year roadside and 3/36,000 bumper to bumper is pathetic for a new vehicle and it had no where near the discounts. The CR-V I drove was very nice inside and I liked the front end but I was not big on the wagon looking styling from the side and rear end. I loved the inside and outside of the Crosstrek but it was missing some features I wanted that it could not be equipped with and the previous oil usage issues that was a big problem with them a few years back made me nervous. A friend of mine has had a 2013, 2015, and 2019 Subaru Impreza and never had the oil usage issue but it just made me nervous. The Kona looked amazing in the green and I liked it style wise as much as the Eclipse Cross bit it was just way to small inside and especially in the rear seat and it was all hard plastic inside even though it looked cool inside with the dark grey and then green trim. In the end the Eclipse Cross was the best fit for us and we got around $7,000.00 off the MSRP on both after rebates, loyalty cash, dealer discounts and more. We bought them 2 days apart in Octane Blue and Red Diamond. In the end I could not be happier and still glad we made the choice we did. We have owned a 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES, 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT, 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 SE and now own two 2019 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SEL Touring’s. All in all there are no bad cars today its just all in what each buyer values most weather it be styling, power, mpg’s, ride quality, features, warranty and so on. Each brand offers their own pluses and minuses. Mitsubishi has filled our needs each and every time weather we were purchasing an SUV or a Subcompact car and even looking at the competition I still went with Mitsubishi each time because it worked best for my needs. Plus their S-AWC system is geared towards driver safety and road holding in rain, snow and emergency maneuvers and it has done amazing for us in the snow, rain, sleet and freezing rain. Plus its great for light off road like dirt and gravel and light rough terrain. It has done amazing on everything I have tried it on. Plus this vehicles does amazing in the Moose Avoidance Test! Thank you Mitsubishi.

I own a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander GT and I almost got this but at the time the dealer had just the base model of this model. Mitsubishi is actually a pretty good brand to buy. They have decades of rally inspired technology behind their cars with the AWD system, and they have the best power train warranty 10 year, 100,000 mile. Companies like Toyota, Honda, and Ford just have a 3 year warranty on any given new car bought from them. The warranty that Mitsubishi comes out with I their cars just shows they have nothing to hide and they standby their models. I highly recommend anyone to buy this brand because your not paying a huge mark up for brands like Toyota just because it's a Toyota lol...I took my Outlander off road and on long road trips and it handled really good. I see Mitsubishi as a hidden gem among other brands that are just popular just because of their name and not because of their durability and power.

I own this car. I love it. Alittle laggy on acceleration, but nothing too noticeable. Drives great, nice and smooth. Infotainment is on point, and I use the trackpad everyday. I own the touring SEL, and got an additional discount from a dealer bring this to about $29k. Love that it has all the safety features I could want. I was debating between this Eclipse across and the XC40, but comparably loafed, the XC40 was about $16k more. The styling of the Eclipse Cross is way better than any of the other cars in this segment. The warranty is unbeatable.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross seems like a decent entry in its class. Its styling may be "different" and it may be less practical than other vehicles that it competes with, but the uniqueness of this vehicle is very interesting... I'm not quite sure if that's enough to sway loyal Toyota, Nissan, and Honda consumers, but at least Mitsubishi is stepping outside of the box. Personally, I think its a good deal, as long as you can find great incentives. As always, from one car reviewer to another, great review (and comparison)!

I remember a friend with a Chrysler that looked like a Japanese car way back.... It was re-badged Mitsubishi... Attractively priced for how plush it was. Also had a ride in a rented Outlander. Again, given the price, pretty sweet. If they were $5,000 more, I would say forget about it. But at what they are selling for, I'd definitely put it into the mix... If nothing else, it will pressure the dealers of the other cars to be more reasonable.

I think it's styling is very attractive, and the extra long warranty is a vote of confidence in the durability of the product which comes in handy if you run into an expensive defect. I had a Highlander with the documented startup rattle problem (VVT) and they lied about it before warranty was up, wouldn't fix it even though I had a video of it. They lost me there. Having been burned, I go for warranty now, that's a huge leg up in this segment.

The Eclipse Cross simply looks great because it's less conventional or mainstream leaning. The value is there. These seem to be the possible fuel economy champion in the class. For relatively conservative drivers the observed average might even be slightly higher. A sidenote about the track pad for the infotainment, is that it could be used by a front passenger to assist the driver. That's probably not how it is designed but seems like a possibility when not driving solo.

This Eclipse Cross is outclassed. Mitsubishi needs to get their mojo back. They can do it. Not sure why they seem lost. They should move away from the CVT and go with a dual clutch. Tighten the suspension and steering up and add more power. Other that that the design is pretty good. Anyone remember the Starion Turbo that was a rival for the 82-85 Supra? I owned an 89 Mitsubishi Mirage that was a pretty decent compact hatch. The automatic seat belts were cool.

Dual clutch? No thanks, its a much less reliable design than a CVT, Ford has proven that. Nissan struggled in the 2000s with flimsy Jatco CVT and has since corrected the issues with 10 plus years of research and development. Mitsubishi, who uses the same company for their CVTs, has much lower documented instances of premature CVT failure. Ford on the other hand, cancelled many of their sedan models due to consumer complaint against the dual clutch.

Excellent review as always. How many units can they sell in such a competitive segment? Given that Outlander and Outlander Sport sell ~34k US units per year, this would have to match that to be a success. However, it will probably hurt Outlander Sport sales, since the person who actually shops for Mitsubishi’s will just gravitate to the newer shiny model on the sales floor. Foreign markets is another story. I am sure it will sell very well worldwide. I like the looks, but it can’t compare to the Mazda products looks wise.

I'll keep saying this until it happens - this is a utility vehicle and we need to see the utility aspect of it. Put down the rear seats and talk about things like opening size and lift over height. Is the most common use case a car full of passengers and suite cases? As for styling, I'd have to agree that it looks decent, at least from the front. Though I'm not crazy about the excess of chrome. Reminds me of GM with those chrome foglight bezels - trying too hard to look 'classy' and winding up looking cheap. As for the rear, that horizontal bar brings back memories of Pontiac Aztek. Being Mitsubishi, there is no way it will sell for anything near MSRP, even if it is a crossover. I bought a Mirage with a 15.5K MSRP for 10.5K. It gets the job done reliably and not much more. Mitsu tried to lure me in with a 'great trade in value' several times, but nothing in their showroom appeals enough to have made me consider the offer. I wish them well, but will likely not be going back for more.

This looked so sweet at its launching. Now that I look at it, I wonder what was Mitsubishi thinking. So, VW lineup looks the same, with just different size and segment type. Mazdas are the same. Both of these sell well. Unfortunately, some Japanese manufacturers still over-design their vehicles. It is an SUV, I'd assume most customers like the practicality of it. The trunk is small and the horizontal bar will limit visibility. I've only seen a few of them on Japanese roads, while classic shape SUVs of this size are the most popular new cars at this moment.

Actually, that doesn't surprise me at all. Honda has always had an amazing ability to pack a lot of useable space inside their vehicles in comparison to their competition. This is going to be hard for Mitsubishi as there are already too many competitors with the same and even better performance. The only ace Mitsubishi have is their warranty and sawc. It doea look great I've seen some here and it really looks good especially at night!

This teaches you, when you can't compete head on with the competition, go in between. Makes it hard to review it properly. I wouldn't want to do it

The design needs getting used to, but all in all it's just different than any other models. I also think, that it looks better in reality than on pictures or videos. Nevertheless it wouldn't be interesting for me, altought I like such Honda- esk designs at the back. In this case, the side lines were led too sharply upwards so that the whole car looks as if it were tilted. I know of course that the rising lines are present in all cars, but here it just seems too extreme.

I don't like it myself. Styling is subjective though. I think this looks more like the Aztec than the Kona (especially from the rear). I've read some say they think the Kona looks like the Aztec, I think it's closer to the Citroen.

In practice, the Mitsubishi will be much cheaper. Customer: "I am interested in this Eclipse Cross. What is your best price?" Mitsubishi Dealer: "We can give you $6,000 off the MSRP." Customer: "I am interested in this CR-V. What is your best price?" Honda Dealer: "We can give you $235 off MSRP."

This S.U.V. is quite nice, but I just don't understand why Mitsubishi decided to put this is the U.S. market when the Outlander/Outlader sport are doing so well.

It is attractive on the outside. But the interior looks like it’s from like 2000 model year. This only competes with the Jeep Compass and Rouge Sport. And the rear seat moves 8inches.

Ikr. I really don’t know why people still buy them. I lost all hope when I saw a review of the Mirage. Features were lacking (that’s an understatement) and they didn’t even try with interior quality. I’m honestly amazed they still exist at all

To see an Eclipse go from a 2 door coupe to a crossover SUV is awkward. Why resurrect an old coupes name? Mitsubishi ran out of names to think of? What's next, a Honda Civic minivan...

Cool, glad you are shooting videos in my lovely (and ludicrously overpriced) neighborhood . Watch out for that fault crack. One day when you drive on Sierra, take some time off, park at the top parking lot and go for a short hike. There are some amazing sea fossils there. Yes, those hills used to be covered by sea, or to be more precise, they were elevated after they were covered by sea. You can see those fossils exposed now. Wave when you pass me on the trail. :)

You're crazy. It isn't attractive. Maybe the front is passable. I wouldn't touch the rear with a ten foot pole. But it's different... I guess. Edit: There are so many fails in this car. Less cargo than HRV? That half-tablet sticking up from the dash? Ain't gonna cut it in this segment!

Too many people are giving this car a hard time because of Mitsubishi prior and its name. As it stands it is a fine but not particularly outstanding SUV. It would be reliable if my last 2 Mitsubishis are any indicator and S-AWC would make it an excellent winter companion, but it needs to go the extra mile in order to steal sales from Toyota and Honda.

If Mitsubishi is really bleeding money badly enough and SUV is a "Get Out of Jail Free Card " to them. Then why don't they spend the money bring an compelling pickup they have been only selling to people outside the US?

I'm rather disappointed by the Eclipse Cross. I think it looks great, but the new powertrain just doesn't deliver. I drive my Mom's Outlander Sport regularly. The 0-60 is faster at 8.6s with the optional 2.4L. I average 30-31mpg driving around the city I live in. Due to the massive discounts Mitsubishi offers, it's a hell of a lot cheaper to buy than the Eclipse Cross. Alex said the Outlander Sport is a subcompact, but it's actually classified as compact. Compare it side by side to the Eclipse Cross and you'll realize they're right about the same size. If you want something quieter and a little bigger, there's the larger Outlander. With the offered discounts, it too can be bought cheaper than the Eclipse Cross. This vehicle makes no sense in their SUV lineup unless it's going to phase out the Outlander Sport. Considering it's Mitsubishi's best selling SUV, I doubt that's happening anytime soon.
