In the original production it’s supposed to be the Sugar Plum Fairy dancing not Clara.

In this newly-reconstructed production for Perm Theater there is no Sugar Plum Fairy, just Masha/Clara.

That actually depends on whose "original production" you count as "the original". The French version usually has children and a Sugar Plum Fairy. Most Russian versions have the leads danced by their principal dancers. I think the love story is more poignant with Clara and the Nutcracker Prince danced by the principals, rather than kids just mucking about and then watching for the entire second half. No Sugar Plum Fairy + Consort ever seem to have any chemistry, and the two most gorgeous pieces of music in the ballet (both Pas de Deux) suffer stilted dancing that is just disappointing.
