I had a 2013 smart ForTwo (Gas 1.0L, 3cyl, 70hp) and that car was a lot of fun. Drove it on I-5 @ 80 mph for 200+ miles, parked it next to a 9 ft. stretch of curb between two driveways (no other car could park there without blocking a driveway), did u-turns almost no other car could do, etc. I traded it in because I started carrying more passengers and needed a vehicle with a back seat. In the time I had it, zero problems; served me well. For my driving, I fueled it up about once a month. Some people criticized my smart - many more paid it compliments. *What really matters is if **_YOU_** like the car, **_NOT_** others.* Lastly, for those considering a new/used smart, *_TEST DRIVE & RESEARCH! KNOW_* what you are getting. (You should do this before purchasing any car.)

I'm 49 and I live 1.5 miles from work. small city, but still difficult to find parking. and the winter with snow it is more difficult . anyway, many of my friends have motorcycle. but I would like something a bit safer and I can use it when it rains or in the winter. So i really like the Smart car, just to go to work maybe run errands around my hood. I have a huge Ford Expedition to use with the family. The only thing that worry me is the bad reputation of the Smart cars. Is it true, that they have a lot of mechanical or electric issues ?

Andy N I also had a 2013 and I can say that Smart Cars are TERRIBLE in the snow. I live in Ohio and I wasn’t able to drive my car out of my long country gravel driveway for two months one year. That being said I miss my smart car dearly. The snow was the only issue for me.

One thing I find interesting is how some people criticize this car's safety so much. The smart has 8 airbags, ABS, ESP, TC, Crosswind Assist, Tridion Safety Cell. By comparison, my motorcycle has: *NO* airbags, *NO* ABS, *NO* ESP, *NO* Traction Control, *NO* seat belts. It does however, have one safety feature: BRAKES. Yet, very few people bash it for being "unsafe." Every vehicle has it's risks.

I used to think the same thing, even wanted to get a small commuter motorcycle. Until one morning about seven months ago when i was sitting at a red light waiting on green and was suddenly slammed into from behind at 45mph by an old lady in a huge SUV... ("the sun was in her eyes") My car was a standard 4dr sedan and the entire trunk crunched in, almost entirely. Had i been sitting at that red light on that morning in this tiny thing or on 2 wheels... I don't even know how it would have turned out. Her SUV wasn't hardly damaged that much. She drove home and my car had to be towed away. (the back suspension was locked up from the impact). I'm all for being green. But this thing would make me feel very uncomfortable. Driving next to all the enormous 4x4 trucks and SUV's and Semi trucks. Think twice before you guys make the jump into something like this.

It's perfect when you're not primarily highway driving, especially as a second car. If you have two cars for two people, those road trips can be handled by the car with a larger range. We are leasing one for 90.02 a month with 3000 down. Not bad, especially when you factor in the other savings (lack of fuel or oil, and only three fluids). One thing to note: there is a radiator in the front. You can see the gaps where the grille lets air in. It is to cool the battery, because it is a liquid cooled battery, unlike the Nissan Leaf.

Have been using them with car2go in nyc. They are a lot of fun to drive at city speeds. You can always park. Everywhere. That’s what makes the gas powered ones so useful. Where I live, a parking spot costs $300 a month minimum (plus 18.25% city tax if you aren’t nyc resident) Not sure if they have charging. With the electric option that pretty much rules out street parking. I figure cost is about $22/day to lease, insure and park in nyc. Unless u use it every day Uber is cheaper and has less hassles.

Great review, Sofyan! This review was hilarious... From the song you chose, to the driving in circles, to slowing down on the twisty offramp; the 2018 Smart ForTwo Electric almost seems as fun to drive as it is to look at. With all jokes to the side, though, the 2018 Smart ForTwo seems like a great car for those who drive short distances in compact areas, like cities and some suburban towns. All in all, though, by Smart axing the gasoline powered models, the appeal for this vehicle may begin to plummetd due to Smart aiming this vehicle towards a more specific target market. As always, awesome review! Keep it up! 👍🏽

Fair review - the front tires are 165, but the rear wheels are 185. This is actually the 2nd generation electric smart, ever so slightly larger battery. The 3-Phase synchronous motor is a real improvement over the original which struggled (even more) on hills or freeway acceleration. The interior is 'nice' but missing a lot of little stowage spaces that the previous model had. And yes - those cup holders are so tiny, a 12oz can of soda won't sit flat in them, and blocks the climate control buttons!

I cannot understand the EPA range figure. Here in the UK smart state the car has a range of 99 miles, and in practice, from experience it manages 90 to 100 in town in the summer, (no AC and in ECO), and in winter around 70 to 80 miles (no heating, use a jacket instead). On the faster roads out if town range drops 20 miles.

When you drive slowly there is no air resistance. When you drive on faster roads you drive faster so air resistance drains your battery. That's why.

Being its an electric model they could have designed the center console without a big shifter and instead just use a small switch to change gears. Then they could have designed bigger cup holder into the console. Also its one of few cars with an infotainment system where the screen looks more intergrated into the dash. Alot of cars today the screen just sort of sticks up above the dash and looks like an afterthought.

The second generation Smart car did not offer the option of parking sensors, which kind of annoys me, because I have never bumped other vehicles or objects as much as what I did in the Smart. Sofyan. Your obviously having a lot of fun in the Smart car. I think it’s too small for success in America. I like small cars but the Mini and Fiat 500 are about as small as I would go
I was interested in what the cabrio looks like with rails removed where they fit in the boot

You really need to drive one to appreciate it. I have the EQ edition one which is more or less the same as this model but I have 18inc wheels 😉

I tested one at my local Smart dealer in Edinburgh. Quite expensive, with wickedly quick acceleration and a great turning circle, but the range is just too low for anything other than city driving. Nicely appointed, however, but the price is the stumbling block along with the range.

You are surprised it has a back up camera? Did you forget that ALL 2018 vehicles are now REQUIRED to have them in the USA?

Some questions: How’s the Cabrio handle the wear and tear, heavy rain, hail, snow, heavy gusts of wind? Ex: will it start leaking in 2 to 3 years? Another question: how does it handle in heavy rain settings, large puddle formations on the road, flooding? Normal gas powered cars may power through them, or “drown” due to the engine flooding. But, since the Smart EQ 42 doesn’t need any induction...would it flood?

It makes much more sense as an EV

Bruce Solomon Not when you consider the range. The gas ones had like a 500 mile range, the EV has a 58 mile range. If it had an 80 mile range I'd buy one.

Range is fine for my daily commute. Wake up with 100km range every morning and haven’t put gas in a car in 5 years.

SmartElectricCar I'm glad it works for you. Where I live there is a lot of highways with 65 mile an hour speed limits at the minimum. And if I want to hang out with friends I gotta drive 50 miles one way to get there. At an average speed of 70 mph I definitely wouldn't make it.

Not for 32k it doesn’t

Pappy Tron Indeed it does, but all my comments were replies to other people. I understand it isn't for long hauls but a 58 mile range is pretty sad.

You know when these Smart cars came out they were watching Steve Urkel/Family Matters and saw the Isetta and a light bulb went off.
