Aloha from Hawai'i Erick, Mahalo nui for this video. I just received my new Tohatsu 6 hp motor yesterday, and I'm looking up break-in videos, and found yours. I'm putting my motor into a bucket for at least the initial 10 minute break in right after this. I also own a 2.5 hp Suzuki for 10 years now which was very reliable but it was a tad slow. This 6 hp should get me into the fishing grounds much faster. Best wishes to you and your family. Aloha a hui hou.

Tohatsu also made the Nissan as well as mercury.I've had mine since 2004.You should get near 8 hrs to gallon trolling.Basically,the motor will pay for itself with fuel savings.Now with close to 4000 hrs,she's burning oil but still fires up on 1st pull.Fine motors.I'm looking for another one to replace my original.

Great video review it helped me make my decision and I also went with this motor. Just to point out that spare rope it comes with is an emergency starter rope and in the manual it shows how to remove recoil starter and use but is the same rope so to each there own. But mine says the 10 min break in must be in water in gear under load at idle 10 min. Doing it your way did you have any issues later on ? Don't seem to be much different other than gently wearing in motor and gear at same time maybe 🤔

That's because you are using the internal gas tank. It would be a good idea to invest in a 3 gallon external tank. You can prime the fuel system at will with it.

@vsukh2011
@vsukh2011 4 жыл бұрын
I just started mine up maybe 5 days ago, initially I had the same problem with starting the first time. Took a good 20 minutes of pulling, adjusting the choke, letting it rest and starting again. After that it’s starts up fairly quickly with 1 or 2 pulls. If you got it to start a few minutes on idle, make sure the choke is pushed in. Things I also tried that seemed to work is fill the tank at least 3/4 of the way or more, make sure the vent is open on the gas cap, and choke is pushed in. Also when it did start, after a good while, I let it run with the choke pushed in for the 10 minute initial break in period. I thought there was something wrong with it initially but being a new user to outboard motors I figured it was me needed to figure it out what I was doing wrong which was flooding the carb most likely. But eventually I got it to run and took it out to the lake a few days later which I was able to start fairly quickly this time.

Hey there Zackary! Yes I have been having a lot of fun with it. Recently I got a new prop for it. It is a 7.8x7 compared to the original one 7.7x8. It sacrifices a little top end speed for more torque so when I have a lot of gear or have someone with me I can get into plane. I am also thinking of upgrading to an 8hp or maybe 9.8hp in the neat future.

Hey there!! Thanks for coming by. Well the main reason is weight really. The 6hp is about 60 pounds and the 9.8 is close to 90. I inflate and inflate the boat every time I use it since i do not carry the boat on a trailer. I carry the boat on my car and once I am done i store the boat on a hand truck and the motor on a stand. I take both inside my own room. Doing this once in awhile would be ok but when you do it every weekend weight begins to play a major role.

Yeah it should be just fine. If for some reason, the original propeller 7.8x8 does not get you into plane, you can always get the step down prop of 7.8x7. It'll reduce your max speed from 16mph down to 14, but it will help you get to plane quicker and faster. I know this for a fact because that's what I did when I had my Saturn SD380.

I just bought the same motor and tried starting it today, I think I messed it up, fuel came out of those two rubber hoses next to the water port, did I overflow the carburetor with the primer bulb?

I have also 5 hp Tohatsu but when i started it first time, i use 1/4 throttle about 1 minute or less than minute in first 10 minute. Owners manual says it has to work in Idle at first 10 minutes. What do you think does it harm to engine?
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 5 жыл бұрын
It doesn't really but it is a good idea to warm it up before hitting full throttle. I usually troll around 3mph for about 10 min before I hit full speed

How do you like that engine dolly? Any good? I've been thinking it probably helps to lug the engine plus the boat from the car, wonder if there is something that can help carry both at the same time?
@ErickMartinSucre

The Outboard wheel stand is mainly used when I take it out of the car and store it back inside the house. Same for the hand truck and the inflatable. I made a video of how I use this let me see if i can get it.

The 9.8 is an awesome engine by the way just make sure to lift with your legs and keep your stomach muscles tights to prevent back injury.
@ErickMartinSucre
@ErickMartinSucre 4 жыл бұрын
When you handle the outboard to place it on the car or stand, keep it close to you while keeping your core muscles tight. The weight is gonna make your body lean forward and keeping your core muscles tight will prevent this from happening. Plan accordingly so your time lifting the outboard is at a minimum e.i placing outboard on stand, car and boat.

@@ErickMartinSucre I've watched it before, it's a very useful. It made me think about getting a dolly but I thought you'd bring it with you to the launch to help you roll the engine down too... I'll have to figure out lifting 90 lbs now into the van and out. Is there a particular reason why you have to lay the engine on that one side you mention on the vid? Oil? Also, any risk of leaking fluids? Thanks brother
