Hello everyone! I finally made the choice to purchase a 9.8hp outboard, and honestly, this will probably be the biggest outboard I'll ever own. I really like portable and lightweight outboards like my 6hp Tohatsu, but recently I've started doing outings with other fellow inflatable boat enthusiasts from Facebook and KZbin and most of them have powerful outboards and I was being left behind. Now with this motor, I'll be able to keep up with ease.

Fun to watch. You actually did yourself a favor by flooding it because when you put oil in the first time OR when you change oil, you are supposed to remove the stop switch and crank the motor ten times so the oil has a chance to disburse. Have a good one!

@@jamesdavidsmith4033 Yes! Very much so. It is a 2-stroke, which has the same weight as my 6hp Tohatsu, and it has a bit more torque than the 4-stroke. The Hangkai isn't without its flaws though. I made a quick video showing that. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mojIq6OEpJ2ir9U

I was looking forward to this review, as I plan to get one for myself (to replace my Tohatsu 6 HP and upgrade to a slightly bigger inflatable). TY! Regarding the difference in weight between 9.8 HP and 9.9 HP, it's because they're very different engines, not because of the accessories... The four stroke 9.8 HP is a two cylinder 209 cc, while the four stroke 9.9 HP is a two cylinder 333 cc. The 9.9 HP has the same engine with 20 HP . If you look at the specifications, the 9.8 HP weighs 81.5 lbs (just like the 8 HP and the 6 HP - because they all have the same 209 cc engine). The 9.9 HP weighs 94.8 lbs -- exactly the same as 20 HP and 15 HP, as they all have the same two cylinder 333 cc engine... (So the Tohatsu four stroke 9.8 HP and the 20 HP have the best weight to power ratio!)

I know royal purple is a very good synthetic oil, but during break-in it's recommend to use regular non synthetic oil. Synthetic is actually too slick to seat the rings properly. It might be ok, it just always recommend to use non synthetic during break-in. After the break-in go to synthetic. If it was me I would switch it. It's not that much oil anyway.

Ive read that the Mercury 9.9 is the same identical motor as the tohatsu 9.8. Does anyone know if this is true? My engine is a 2021 and thats what Im referring to. Thank you!

No, the 9.8hp has the 200+ cc motor, while the 9.9 has the 300+cc motor.

Thank you all. I ordered a carb for a 20hp merc and prop also. If this is correct, and its the 300+cc engine, it should accept the carb and like it. I will find out the beginning of the week when I swap the carb and Prop.

How did you choose a model? I looked up, there are so many models of Tohatsu 9.8hp, I got lost.

The very first one that appears is the one you want for inflatables. 15 inch "short shaft" no electronic control steering, just tiller handle. onlineoutboards.com/collections/tohatsu-9-8-hp-outboards/products/2022-tohatsu-9-8-hp-mfs9-8bs-outboard-motor

@@ErickMartinSucre Why not get a 20HP? It is like only 10-15lb heavier. You'd run it half way, should be a quieter ride? No?

@@Booboosik 9.8 is heavy enough for me to handle. Kep in mind the weight is dry, does not include the oils in the motor. With oil, its about 86 punds, while the 20 is 100
