The Prius is impressive, but it's just so... Toyota :-P The Ioniq is a thousand times better, I just wish it had an electric heater! I looked at the Ioniq but bought a Golf GTE instead. More fun to drive anyway ;-) Similar to the A3 e-tron. But if I were in Canada it'd be the Volt hands down!

@@marco.morel04 It is almost unnoticeable on the fuel economy when driving fast for long periods. I've seen some drivers loose at most 4 mpg sharing their drive logs on youtube. From an empty SOC, which sucks, charge mode can take 45 minutes to fill up to 75%. That's handy for when you know that you're at most an hour away from the town/city.

@@toyotaprius79 in my 2018 Prime, charge mode works best at speed between 40-50 MPH, any faster and I see barely any charge for pretty lack luster fuel economy so I consider it pretty useless, it might just be my car though cause I have heard it works well for others, I wouldn't know what would be wrong with my car to cause it to work so inefficiently but it drives just fine and the Hybrid system works properly so I'm not concerned 😂

@swfk2
@swfk2 5 жыл бұрын
Owner's perspective: I have had my Prius Prime since July. 5000+km later I am almost done my third tank. $50 CAD to fill up in BC. It's super slow and sad compared to my other toys (Civic Type R and S2000) but it saves me so much money. I used to spend about $600 CAD in fuel in my S3 per month. S3 did about 8L/100km. Now with the Prime I charge at home, charge when I can at work. One way to work is 47km. So far since new I've averaged 1.9L/100km. First tank did 2300km, second tank did 1800+km. Third tank is getting worse, maybe due to weather. If anyone is wondering, the 4 seater doesn't bug me at all. I thought it was going to be an issue but I never encountered it. Rear seats are extremely roomy. The lack of Apple CarPlay is tolerable. I use a magnet mount for my phone to mount just to the right of the steering wheel. Waze, Google Maps from there. My music is played via Bluetooth. The gloss black isn't terrible, I never put any scratchy hard objects in the console. There is a tray in the giant center console and any scratchy hard objects can go in there. Passengers with bags will always go in the trunk or the floor. Mine has stayed free of any scratches. The heated steering wheel kinda sucks. Top and bottom parts don't heat up. I sell Jaguar Land Rover and those steering wheels get so hot I have to turn it off after 2 minutes. (Side note, the 4 cylinder F Type you guys reviewed got sold at my dealer) The lane keep assist is absolute garbage however the adaptive cruise works very well. It's smoother than Audi's ACC. Front collision warning, blind spot monitoring also work very well. Now I actually kinda wish I got the i3S REx because of how far my commute is. When there are no spots to charge the car, I leave work without the charged battery, the car acts as a normal Prius and does about 4L/100km, this car is not great for highways. If I had the i3S REx, it would have a shorter combined range but more electric range. i3 would've been more suited for my commute. I do enjoy how the Prius is extremely comfortable and it's softer than the i3. i3 is more fun to drive as the steering is sharper, but the ride is stiffer there. All in all I still enjoy the Prius Prime, it's better looking than the Honda PHEVs, especially the Clarity, that thing is gross. I can use the HOV lanes in BC and it saves me time during my commute.

I have this car. If you only drive it in ECO mode, it is rather sluggish. However, if you really want pep, drive it in POWER mode. It really kicks up the torque. It will cost you in the MPGs, but will move along much nicer. For that matter, even just driving in NORMAL mode is peppier than ECO. Also, I learned that driving in snow really requires driving in POWER mode. Having had the 2nd Gen Prius and getting stuck too many times in snow, I find the Prime in POWER mode to be much better in snow.

Tbh Prius is a really good car. Super reliable, practical, and saves a lot of gas. And look wise I don't think it's ugly. Sure it's not particularly handsome like some other cars, but it's definitely not ugly as some people say. It looks like a normal car. I have a 2010 and I love it. Gonna trade it soon for a Lexus is250 though. But I'm usually always confused as to why it gets so much hate. As car enthusiasts in my opinion we need to love every car what it's meant for. Sure Prius isn't the fastest car, but fast = more gas. And Prius is a gas saver so it being slower makes sense. Before I got one I was kinda skeptical. But after driving it for over a year I realized that it's a great car.

The B mode is not more regenerative brake, it uses the ICE as brake. Useful for downhills.
@toyotaprius79
@toyotaprius79 4 жыл бұрын
if we look at the OBD softwares, in D passive regen is like 5kW, B is 10-15kW with some proportion going to the spinning engine. When the battery is full to the brim, still going down hill, the generator can soak up as much a 45kW to spin the engine as an air pump. It's great, sounds like a diesel Jay brake. But except when the battery is almost full, it's useless. I heard though that B mode is good for autocrosses, it keeps the engine spinning and ready more for re-ignition to accelerate, otherwise the engine will always keep needing the MG1 generator to restart it, and that can take up 20hp out of the 36hp motor.

It a particular gripe actual Prius fans just can't stand about Toyota. Their PR for years have been so incredulous and pretentious. Rather than viewing owners enjoying the raw practical and physical reliability of a go anywhere hatch (like a Citroen CX) - they bought themselves into the unhelpful virtuous, status minded Head-up-their-Holers. In many markets only until last year, Priuses were not available in base trim and sold as entry-luxury cars, especially in Europe... That carbon composite rear hatch was really just an unnecessary but slick gimmick. Am sad to hear about its real cost.

First, Jakub and Yuri - you guys are a really great team, love watching your videos.... Second, hold on to your hat, I traded in my '15 Golf R for my 18 Prime Premium... lol. But seriously I did, I wanted a normal appliance for once, and also wanted to save money.... and man is the prius prime an incredible appliance. Yes the big screen and UI/UX is absolutely ATROCIOUS (tuning stations on sirius XM is absurdly bad), but the screens up top aren't bad. Yes, the little 15" wheels are quite bad looking (17's actually make the car look good - toyota should've put the touring wheels on there. Yes its slow, and low speed turning it feels a bit boat like. BUT.... The car is VERY comfortable to drive. It's actually very refined in its manners, and very quiet. My commute to work is 24 miles round trip. Sidenote, my range in the summer was up to 33 miles. I plug in the prime every night in my apartment garage, which works well, however the extra range of a volt would've been so much nicer. That said, over 3500 miles I'm averaging 290MPG, yes 290 freaking mpg. On gas I can easily get in the 60's. Have I missed the driving dynamics of a sporty car and wish I got a volt or bolt, yes (but Chevrolet dealers are a complete joke and that killed that idea). IN fact, my first week with the car I had pretty bad buyer's remorse cause it was such a big change. However, driving with eco in mind and being judged by the prius constantly with my eco score (lol) - has actually relaxed me, you just flip the joystick to d and go to your destination effortlessly. Oh speaking of which, standard toyota safety sense is awesome (dynamic cruise control is so cool). As are standard LED headlights which are quite good. I've actually thought about trading the prime in but its just so good at doing what its meant to do which is save me $100 in gas every month and be dead reliable and comfortable. Very fair review from both of you!

I say this on every hybrid type car review, but by far for the price, buying a Sonata Hybrid during a hyundai year end clearance event is probably the most affordable way to own a hybrid, unless it's a used prius from the early 2000s. It's only that finding one that is left is generally really hard, especially in Ontario. On the prime, that giant tablet screen is really off putting. Yeah it's actually like paying for a downgrade.

i think it's a political thing. I bet if you ask people which party they belong to, the Prius haters are all Republican. They just hate anything that helps the environment and people who are environmentally conscious. However, a lot of people buy just because they want more money in their pockets and less at the pump, reliability, cost, and safety. It wouldn't matter what it looks like, there would be the same haters.

The steering wheel has a surprisingly sporty feel to it - allows you to easily forget you're driving a prius. Gloss black interior elements stink and I find the headrest sits too far forward for my liking, but other than that it's a perfect mid-step on the road to an all electric down the road.

Hi guys, Thanks for your show, I've been watching it from France for a few months and really enjoy your tone and the fact you don't take yourselves seriously! Worth having a look, not sure it was ever sold in Canada though. Cheers Damien

After buying 5 priuses in my family, including the PiP, I've moved on to Tesla. I was planning to trade in the PiP for the Prime, but the Prime lost the 5th seat in the rear and less cargo room, so that broke the deal for me. Waiting for the Model Y to replace the PiP. Prius itself is a great car for those who want to wean themselves off of gasoline.

I own a Prius Prime 2019 upgrade (not the technology package seen here) for 5 months now. Reasons i love my Prius: I almost forgot how to put gas in it!! No kidding 3000km and i have put 54 liters so far!! Nice sleek look (ok not everyone likes the look, but I do) also I have the red color, nice! Very comfortable ride (I had a Mazda before, very rough), excellent braking. Love the way the door just opens when you reach for the door handle. I am 6 foot 1, and i fit comfortably in all seats (if 4 person with this height, we would all be comfortable). Autocontrole cruise control. The car automatically adjust your speed when you reach a car that is slower. I like it, but you have to realize it when you get close, because before you know it, you are 10 km/h slower and you forget to pass the car. Qi charge for iPhone..except the spot is black like my phone and forgot to pick up my phone a few times And now on to the stuff I hate about my Prius Prime or should i say my computer on wheels. God dammit (sorry) the center control which is so promissing, is so frustrating. You guys in the video are right, the design is crap. You can't see very well, the buttons to change anything on the radio is so small, you have to take your eyes off the road to actually see, the volume button, again you have to take your eyes off the road to use them (fortunatly you have the button on the steering wheel), the road map...well completely not user friendly, good luck getting to where you want. You have to tell it which province you want to go to...what how many Ottawa are there in Canada!! And one thing you guys did not mention is the brightness of the screen at night, it is blinding. But hey there is a feature to turn the screen off (excellent) but now you lose the ability to use the functions (radio, temperature control, map, etc.) but it keeps functionning...but you can`t see it. The heated seat..you guys nailed it, where are the buttons again!!! the storage space between the front seat actually opens sideways, not sure what Toyota is thinking, but I don't like it. Also a few days after I had the car, i noticed that the plastic trim on the hatchback door (on the top) was cracked. Notice when you lift the hatch, that this plastic trim is the heighest point...which means you will hit it first if you have a low ceiling in your garage...which is not my case, I think my car came like that &%/?. Also don't care about the beeping noise when you back up. So loud and really, is that necessary (well that loud anyways). THe center panel...well just takes my eyes off the road if i want to view what is on the far right. That idea has to go now. You guys talked about storage space, 10 box. That looks impressive, but wait til you try to put your bike in there. You litteraly have to put it in partially, go to the side door, pull it in a bit more, then go the the back and finish the job. There is the nice storage for the cable, but there is not much else you can hide there. I don't hate that it's a 4 seater, but it would be nice to have 5. I knew what i was getting when i bought it! In all, I think the interior of this car is very poorly designed and not user friendly at all, which is very frustrating. I should not be frustrated at my car!! Toyota obviously know they are the best car company (at least they act like it) and they probably go on reputation to sell this car, instead of testing it with real people and get feedback and improve the product. I give this car a 4 out of 10

Nice review as always guys. One thing you didn't mention is there are not three seats in the back seat. Which is a total bummer.lack of Apple carplay Android auto is pretty much a Toyota saying at least for now except in the Avalon. The reverse beeping in previous generation Priuses you could disable going through a couple of steps in the car. You can find that on KZbin. However in the prime they may have changed that procedure Priuses have done that since the very beginning and it's been extremely annoying since the very beginning. The reasoning is when is in reverse the gasoline engine will almost never run and so it's easy to accidentally put it in reverse and back into something thinking you were in park. Stupid in my opinion but that's the reasoning. the handling on the new Prius is supposed to be significantly better than the previous Priuses because they actually have a real now. I currently drive a 2008 with 257000 miles on it and it still drives pretty good and still gives me 45 to 48 miles per gallon average. There is a great video on Weber Automotive that shows the removal of the battery pack in a few other technical details on the Prius Prime and every other Prius and electric vehicles including the bolt that you just drove. so you might check out his channel if you want to see some mechanical and Technical information. You mentioned not being able to recharge the battery with the gasoline engine. I do believe on the Kia Niro and Hyundai ioniq plug in hybrids that if you put it in low mode on the transmission it will charge the battery backup takes about 45 minutes from empty while driving down the interstate. Kind of a handy feature if you know you're going to be on a road trip and then do some City driving after that.

Had a 2010 and loved it. Now a 2018 Prime Premium I think it’s a middle tier, and first walked away from the dealer when we saw the interior. Tried the Niro and the Volt but came back to the Prime. Likes, we’re at 9000 miles and averaging 115 mpg, oh we’re in the US. I love the smoothness of transitioning between electric and gas motors. For storage and carrying my artwork, I don’t like the raised trunk because of battery space and the transition to the seats when folded down. I also have the large screen and the glare and the functions are big negatives. The piano black plastic I barely can stand and my wife has a dust cloth and wipes it down daily. I like that I can charge my phone while driving wirelessly, but I can also plug in with USB. We mostly like listening to Pandora and Podcasts which work from our iPhones with the Toyota app, I think that’s how it functions. The glove box is tiny, and won’t hold anything else with all the manuals. The other things you pointed out like the heated seats buttons are in a bad location, and making changes on the screen for music, navigation, temp controls are hazards when driving. The automating dimming of bright lights isn’t perfect and I’ve pissed off approaching vehicles when the brights don’t go off quickly. I don’t use the drifting beyond the white line feature which takes control of the steering wheel. I have hardly learned anything about these features, and would love a straight forward tutorial video on the options with all the controls. We mostly drive errands around town, and one long trip loaded with my heavy sculptures, we averaged 54mpg. Still miss our red 2010, and looking at Prius V for hauling my artwork versus this. Too bad they ended those models. Thanks for making this fun, StraightPipes.

We own a 2017 Prius Prime Advanced and love it. We have the white interior. It is way more comfortable and quieter than the 2004 Prius and 2010 Prius that we also own. My wife loves the heated seats and steering wheel. She mostly drives this car back and forth to work which is 9 miles each way so it is within the range of the battery and never uses the gas engine on her work commute. When it rains the back window stays clear because of the aerodynamics which is way cool to experience for the first time at least. Now we just pay no attention to it but it beats having a wiper for sure. The sensors on this car sure are nice. It warns you of cars coming when you back out of the driveway, it warns you of cars in your blind spots, it actually will automatically come to a stop in heavy traffic and then automatically start moving again and take you back up to your set speed or safe speed when traffic starts moving again. One thing they could do easily but don't have is the ability to use the back up camera as a rear view while moving forward. That would be very nice and welcome. We have kept the Sirius Radio subscription going because it is so nice. Only about 30 dollars every 6 months because I tell Sirius that is all that we will pay or we drop them and to them 30 is better than zippo. Overall this is the best vehicle we have ever owned and though it could always be better, we have absolutely no buyers remorse. I am looking forward to a Toyota all electric vehicle that I understand they are working on. One other thing is that Toyota, so far at least, really shows their appreciation for our business. No regrets.

You can turn off the reverse beep with an OBD2 scanner and a 3rd party app for about 1/3 of what a Toyota dealership would charge you. They quoted me upwards of $75 and said it would take an hour. In 2005, I bought a gen 2 prius because I thought it was important to support hybrid vehicles by actually buying one. It was surprisingly roomy, with an airy interior and tons of cargo space. It was great on gas and utterly reliable and even though it had zero sportiness, I came to love it for saving me a ton of money at the pump and being a truly excellent city vehicle. Yes, it was more appliance than auto, and you didn’t drive it as much as “Pilot” it but it was brilliant. Then came the Gen 3. Instead of actually improving the handling and performance, they added a bit of extra swoop to the exterior body lines, and traded an open cockpit for a “sportier” design with a massive center console that ate tons of space and made the car actually feel smaller. The already great MPG was made a bit better but not enough to justify the noticeable increase in price. I had high hopes for the 4th Gen car. Word through the prius car forums was that Toyota was focused on improving handling, ride quality and performance. Then it debuted, looking like the misshapen love child of a Geo Storm and the Toyota Mirai. It was a real kick in the nads. the Gen 2 was no beauty, but it had a kind of aerodynamic wedge shape that was at least inoffensive. This newest generation has all that bizarre white and black plastic and the center console stack looks like earth Vader’s head. It drives more like the car we wanted, but it looks like they welded bits of different cars together. It’s a science project gone haywire. Maybe that, in part, explains why sales of this new model are half of what they were at their peak. I hope the plummeting sales figures helps toyota gets the message. There are plenty of good hybrid vehicles to choose from now. They need to stop focusing on standing out and work more on fitting in

I drive my parents’ Prius Prime and use this advantage to pass cars at traffic lights. Also, driving an electric car or hybrid in electric mode makes you more comfortable with flooring the pedal and makes you quicker, because you don’t hear the engine noise and think about “oh gosh I’m using too much fuel”. I have it in EV mode and floor it, and I accelerate with the full 98HP. The Audi next to me would use 1/5 throttle and accelerate with maybe 50HP.
