You want to save money on fuel? Do you make lots of small trips? Do you live somewhere that has rebates for EV's and PHEV's? This is the car you need then.With the price of fuel sky rocketing, a PHEV is the perfect car for most people. You don't have to plug it in all the time, 1000+ KMs range.

Everyone who drove the current Prius praises it's handling, driving feel and road manners. It drives completely different than the older models. It is not even close to being one of the worst driving cars, the only reason you write that it's because it's a Prius and you think it's "cool" to hate the Prius. Childish keyboard warrior. Also a sporty driving feeel is not the only way to enjoy driving, many people like hypermiling, that can be very engaging too. But you are too ignorant to understand that a good car doesn't have to be sporty.

Prius Prime owner here. Great review! I’ve had mine for a year, and I’ve been able to operate well over 90% EV on it! ~18500 miles on the odometer, but only ~1500 on the engine! That being the case, I bet I can keep this car alive for 300Kmiles! Relative prices of electricity vs. gas vary (in my particular case, electric is ~30-40% cheaper per mile, even at 55MPG), however, making a $30K purchase once every 20 years rather than once every 12 years is how to really save money on a car purchase! The screen works great for me except for two things: First, there’s a boot-up delay before I can adjust climate controls. Second, and this is often overlooked in reviews: The GUI has everything popping up from the bottom of the screen, and that takes your eyes farther off the road than if they’d gone top-down instead! FYI: I have been pretty consistently seeing, under typical weather conditions, about ~30 miles (~50 Km) per charge, and other Prius Prime owners have been reporting about the same. Cold weather can eat into that though. The heat pump (which burns a lot less battery power than a resistive heater) warms up very quickly compared to an engine! FWIW, I’ve never tried EV Auto mode. As you alluded, operating in EV mode this baby feels like it’s gliding on Teflon, and when the engine kicks in, it feels normal for a Prius, but sluggish compared to EV operation. On a long road trip, it reported 56MPG (24Km/l), in pure hybrid operation. I have no idea what it gets in town, because I pretty much don’t use any gas in town! I go to the gas station once every 2-3 months and put in a couple gallons each time! Of course, I don’t fill it up unless I’m going on a road trip, or the gas would get really really stale after a year of not using it!

I bought it (the European model, not called Prime) because nobody could deliver an affordable electric car with long range at the time (Aug 2017, Norway). Tesla (for example) is not affordable, with car prices in Norway being typically three times as high as in the US. This car was on display, I fell in love with it, even more so after a test drive, and I bought it. Even in Norway with so many electric cars on the roads, having access to chargers at the right time in the right place can be a problem for some of us, and so I'm very happy with the hybrid. I've got the solar panel roof, and drive home from work with power gathered from the sun during the day. I need some gas for my weekend destination, but drive fully electric during the week. There are a few drawbacks - not much headroom in the back seats, of which there are only two, very little space in the far back, some controls not good (but the essentials are OK) - but nothing that bothers me. Driving it makes me feel like I'm in a sci-fi movie - it's great.

Prius Prime owner here: I've had the car since late Dec., of '16. Great car. Love driving in pure EV mode. My daily commute is around 20 miles, so that allows me to drive to work and back and perhaps a quick stop for a local errand before recharging for tomorrow. One major caveat. Regular home electricity costs more than gas when factoring in all charges and the total bottom line cost of your electricity. I have solar panels on my home, and that reduced my electricity cost significantly. Regular grid electricity costs me .284 per kWh. The Prius Prime takes 6.6 kWh to fully recharge (the battery capacity is 8.8, but it never fully charges or discharges. A Kill-A-Watt meter bears this out.) Multiply .284 x 6.6 and then double that to come up with 50 miles of EV driving compared with 50 mpg that the car can get on gas. That number comes out to just near $3.75 in electricity. My solar contract has a fixed rate of .159 per kWh, so that same calculation comes out to just near $2.10 for 50 miles of EV driving. If gas gets to $3.75 a gal, then it wouldn't cost any different to drive on grid rate electricity or gas, but to pay significantly more for the privilege hits you hard in the wallet. Having my solar contract, my EV driving will always be locked in at $2.10 for 50 miles of EV mode. Long story short... If you drive ANY EV and charge it at home on your own dime, it will cost you more to drive than a good hybrid.

Zolar Czakl thank you for doing the math. I was wondering about this
@jawsch
@jawsch 6 жыл бұрын
"Regular home electricity costs more than gas when factoring in all charges and the total bottom line cost of your electricity" Depends where you live. For me, our rates are ~$0.06 per kWh where I live. So I pay ~$0.42 to travel 30-34 miles, $0.84 for 60. (I typically get 30+ out of my EV for my daily work commute) Gas is currently hovering around $2.75-2.99 here (jumps around a lot lately) I filled up my tank on 4/12 and still have over half a tank left. :P I fully believe PHEVs will be the big "wave" more than full EVs will, primarily because of the lack of infrastructure and range anxiety new buyers will have. I love this car as well! Had mine since October '17 and I can't wait for work to install the free charging stations!
@zolarczakl3880
@zolarczakl3880 6 жыл бұрын
@Josh Elder With all due respect, I don't know how it is possible that your *bottom line* price for grid electricity is .06 per kWh. Even before factoring in delivery charges and all the rest, my kWh rate is around .12 per kWh. You're telling me that if you were to use 500 kWh in a summer month, using A/C in your home and charging your car every night, your *total* bottom line electricity bill would be no more than $30.00? Good for you if you do have rates that ridiculously low, but I doubt it.
@zolarczakl3880
@zolarczakl3880 6 жыл бұрын
The math is easy. Just look at your electricity bill, take the total amount of the bill and divide that number by the total kWh used that month. If I didn't get solar panels, I would only drive the Prius Prime as a gas hybrid, which would've been a waste of time buying the plug-in version. That said, if an owner has a job with free charging stations available to them, that's a great perk. I don't, so I'm charging on my own dime. Solar makes it affordable - and clean ;)
@jawsch
@jawsch 6 жыл бұрын
lge-ku.com/sites/default/files/lgereselectric.pdf Typical rate in my area is $0.09382 per kWh lge-ku.com/residential/billing/time-of-day-rates/energy-rate However, they offer a Time of Day Energy Rate Plan; Which lowers it to $0.06365 per kWh during off-peak hours (which is when I charge) So yea, I am telling you that. One of the few benefits of living in "Coal Country". Sure it's not clean but it's what I have and can't afford $10k+ for solar panels.

Enjoyed your video as always; it touches on all the important points! Answered my questions about heater not turning on the engine during cold mornings. I have been toying with the idea of buying a Prius Prime, but there is the issue of heavy snow in my area. Supposedly, Subaru will be coming out with a plug-in hybrid for the Crosstrek model for 2019 that uses technology borrowed from the Prius Prime through their association with Toyota. That might be more practical for my needs. Hopefully will be looking forward to your review on that car, if that happens.

Love my 2017 prime. Wintertime was a challenge, average 20 miles to a charge with heat, BUT getting average 35-36 miles with mild to warm temps. Great car. Drove my mother's 3rd Gen prius and I liked it but it was so blasted temperamental with the 45 mph limit on ev and the warmup before you could do ev mode.

I've had a Prius Prime for over a year now. My running average mpg's is currently at 88.9 mpg. The front end of the Prius Prime looks more like a Lexus than a Prius, and I like that. It's a great car. Sometimes I turn the radio off just to hear the futuristic whine in EV mode. With a charge on the plug-in partition, it defaults to EV mode, but you can toggle it in and out of HV mode.

I enjoyed it and I've watched a lot of Prime reviews as I have one on order in about 3 weeks. However, currently with a previous model Prius, I occasionally enjoy mashing it around in sport or even traction off. It's no sports car but it is fun, word of caution, and instant torque eats rigid tires

There are no rebates in province of alberta. I make lots of short trips (10 km to work and back). I think I only travel about 10000 km per year. You set it and forget it. 70 degrees is you comfort zone then set it and it will keep your side to that temp. in older cars we constantly changed the AC because they only turned on/off and the temp was approximate today they accurate. You do not go to your house 10 times a day changing or raising and lowering the heat or AC do you. Embrace the future. I say this because I was the same way with power windows, I said who needs these buttons to make your windows go iPhone and down I hated looking for the switches everybody knows where the crank to lower the window is! (In case this gets lost in this comment this last part about the window crank was sarcasm)

CoolRaul actually my corolla has auto climate and I still change the settings manually based on if I want windows down or if I want the ac on. And yeah... window cranks suck! Lol. Have a good one!

Apple car play and android auto are preferable to a giant screen. Also, I’d rather have a hyundai Ioniq or a Kia Niro plug-in after they spend a few years getting the kinks out and get a manage to get a few more EV miles. I love that Hyundai is offering lifetime battery replacements and the Kia Niro is a compact SUV. SUVs have the lowest number of fatalities in collisions. Both the Ioniq and the Niro have amazing interior features. The Niro premium has heated and cooled seats! Virtually unheard of in EVs today. Also, hybrids don’t save money unless you get a crazy state tax credit in addition to the federal tax credit. Even then, if you got a similar gas model compact car you’d save thousands on the initial purchase price. Also many states have an annual registration tax ($200 in GA) to make up for lost taxes on gas. That makes it really difficult to get ROI. Buy a hybrid or EV to reduce your carbon footprint only. If you want to save money buy a used small car that gets great gas mileage like the Mitsubishi Mirage. Prius, Mirage, both look terrible and have poor ride quality.

World Peace The Japanese also have an aging population and their nation is in an enormous amount of debt. I don’t care who makes what. Give me another Hybrid at a lower cost that looks like a car and not like a spaceship, and I’ll support that.

One thing not mentioned. That vehicle in very cold Temps (below 0) will not heat the vehicle from the electric heater.
@EverydayReviews2022
@EverydayReviews2022 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Did not know that as it wasn’t below when tested. Will the electric heater work below zero though when plugged in? I’m guessing it would so you could preheat the cabin while hooked to the grid.

You mean 0 Celsius, not 0 Fahrenheit. All the way down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit, the electric heat-pump is used. It's fast & efficient, allowing you to drive in EV during the winter. Also, when colder, the engine won't run non-stop. It shuts off once coolant is warmed and circulates that while your driving in EV.

This car is a great investment. If gas is priced under $ 2.50 a gallon you are better off running the gas engine all of the time. You can easily get 55 MPG with it, so why not buy the standard Prius. Because it is looks like crap and with the rebate the prime is cheaper and if gas is over $2.50 you can plug it in

juston chan Under what circumstances do you think a battery replacement is necessary? We traded my wife's 2005 Honda Civic hybrid at 140K and the battery worked just fine. That's a 10+ year old car, with all those miles, on a fully functioning battery with apparently lots more life left in it.
