People doubt the mpg on the gte but I’ve had one 2 years now after owning many a Gti and I’ll never go back I remember spending 200 a month on fuel on a Gti I’d nearly get 6 months outta that now in the gte

What average mpg do you get? I got the 2016 golf 1.6 tdi and it claims 60, but driving round city its actually around 35mpg

I get in and out of work on full electric charge either way But if your dippin in and out of hybrid mode you ll get 92mpg If you completely discharge the battery you will get 40 plus out of the 1.4 tsi

Stock the GTE actually has 230hp and 0-100 is around 6.7 seconds. In hybrid mode the electric motor is limited to 50hp, when tuning it has the full 102hp. And the 1.4TSI is also tuneable so a stage 1 does ~302hp and turns off start/stop system

Excellent review. GTi also wins on boot size. 380 litres compared to 272 litres in GTE [ smaller than wife's 5 door mini cooper] plus no spare wheel in GTE.

GTE actually has 226bhp and gets to 60 in around 6.3s. VW have been modest with the figures for some reason.

Wonder how the GTE compares to my car which is an R-line with just the 1.4tsi 150 without the electric motors. It still feels pretty quick and it's only half a second slower and a few mph slower

Got my GTE 6days ago after a 7month wait. 21 gentle miles on a full charge. After a full charge the display even shows only 21 miles range wtf? Also, CarNet simply does not work. Plus, car sits on its suspension with a full iPhone 8 width between tyre and wheel arch and looks like its trying to be an old person’s crossover. Glad it wasn’t me that paid £35k for it.

Good vid mate. I hire these on Zipcar they are quite a blast. I’d have one anyday over the gti. Because the ability to switch into electric in city driving is fantastic. And very quite and relaxing. Still nowhere near as fun as my z4 3.0 tho ;). And that 1.4 sounds like your ragging a Fiat punto.

On a long distance the gti should do better. A hybird carries a lot more weight. A lot of weight a on long journey is not a good thing. The only reason the gte does well on vw's mpg test is that the car is tested under certain conditions. If you are trying to drive the car economically you will most likely only get 60-70mpg. A hybird is normally only better for short distances e.g. city driving.

The problem is, REALISTICALLY, the consumptions won't be accurate. Everyday, the GTI will probably get 35mpg (on a good day). The GTE will probably be nowhere near 156mpg. I like the idea of the GTE, as it's more fun than most other hybrids; however, it does still look quite boring. Even the GTI looks a little bit too subtle, in my personal opinion. Nevertheless, great video!

GTE real MPG is closer to 70 - 80 with it having some charge. Typical VW numbers 150+ hahahah good joke VW!
