In Part 2 of this 2018 Wyoming Elk Hunt, Randy and Matthew Newberg decide to check out a different part of the unit in the morning. But surprisingly, they aren't finding many elk at all. A small herd is located, but these results pale in comparison to the day prior.
Finally, they decide to check out a different area and right away they find a group of mature bulls. They believe one of them is the biggest they have seen yet.
Matthew decides he wants to try and get closer. The bull remains bedded but doesn't provide a shot that Matthew is comfortable with. Finally, after waiting for over twenty minutes, the bull stands up and turns broadside. Matthew takes the shot and the celebrating begins. After an evening of butchering, it's now dark and the crew makes has another headlamp pack out back to the truck.

Some of you people need to look back at past videos of Matthew.....the guy knows exactly what he's doing and exactly what's going on. He just has a different personality than Randy. I would bet Randy himself would even admit that Matthew's demeanor in those intense moments is a valuable trait. Those of you dismissing Matthew and his abilities need to move on. He's proven himself plenty of times on other video'd hunts.

But, the critics know it all, just ask them 😉. Or better yet, just give them a minute and they will tell you how it is. I'm sitting here laughing at most of this. Appreciate your comments and context. Yeah, his deliberate demeanor is a different than what you see in most hunting videos, but as you say, it is a valuable trait. Thanks for watching.

I think Matthew handled himself like a real trooper. The first day he held off because he wanted something better than what they had seen and knew that there were plenty of elk and opportunities for later days if he didn't take one the first day or two. Because he waited he now has a mega trophy.

Exactly. It's hard to be yourself when you know that hundreds of thousands of people will be judging everything you say and do. Good on ya Matthew, keep up the good work brother and congrats on the trophy. Randy, as always, thank you for taking the time and effort to film and document as much as you do, it's much appreciated.

Randy I owe you an apology. I criticized your relationship with Matthew. I'm sorry. Not my position and this is not the venue. I had no intention of hurting anyone. My relationship with my father was on the rocks and I'm sorry for projecting that. You are a real professional and produce the best hunting content on the web. Appreciate all you do.@@Fresh_Tracks

I would rather watch an authentic reaction than fake one like we have to watch on the hunting channels. I have never seen anyone hunting, thats killed a nice animal act like some of the losers recreating the shooting act so they get some footage, you would think they know enough to carry extra arrows to fill the quiver back up.

Awesome hunt Matthew! Great shooting ! Beautiful bull ! Seeing Randy and Matthew laying there talking back and forth before the shot shows us just how much you both enjoy each other ! Hearing different people's opinions on here about Matthew's reaction is heart breaking! My brother and son are the exact same way , they show no emotion, it's not that they stuck up or cocky ,they just show their emotions in another way......get to know the person you are talking about before you bash them! We are all here for the same reasons. So just enjoy the content. But that's just my opinion. Lol

Thanks for watching. The negative comments are just a reality of doing what we do. Some folks go through life with the motto, "I'm not happy until you're not happy" and they use the anonymous nature of the internet to make them the experts. I doubt if any of them met me, Matthew, or some of our other guest hunters they sometimes critique, they would say any of the comments they post on the world wide web. Just comes with the territory.

Great stuff! I don't know Matthew but he seems like a great guy and a terrific hunter.Its good to see a young man waiting 12 years for a tag and then to show that kind of restraint on the hunt.I encourage all the young hunters I mentor to watch these shows.A big thank you to the entire crew for everything you do for the great sport of hunting!Lots of potential young hunters out there who just need some one to show them the way and that is what you guys are doing.Keep up the good work.

I think some of you are being unfair to Matthew, he seems camera shy and as any son knows there is not greater gold mine of fun than winding up your father. Also an as "less experienced" hunter than most of the team there he may be unsure of animal size from longer range. I am unsure of the system works in the USA with prefence points but by the sound of it, Matthew has been working for many years to get a tag in that unit and doesnt want to feel like he has wasted it.
@Fresh_Tracks

Thanks, Andrew, but these kind of comments are the unfortunate part of how people interact when they have the benefit of anonymity of the internet. They have no idea how much hunting Matthew has done, how he operates, and I doubt they know he has been instrumental in guiding our platforms to where they are. That said, we just accept it as part of the world we deal in. All groups have the few who are comfortable making assessments of people and their motives without event the slightest knowledge of them. And thankfully 99% of each group are great people, which are the people we are here to produce content for.

I guess the Hostess Donettes powdered minis haven't lost their magic! Congrats on the harvest of a magnificent bull elk! I couldn't help but laugh out loud during the friendly banter back and forth between father and son when the bull was first spotted. Marcus: (Excitedly) What do you think of that bull? Mathew: (Calmly) It's nice. Randy: (Incredulously) Nice. Marcus: (Still with ice water running through his veins) It's nice. Randy: (Borderline neurotic) It's FREAKING HUGE! Randy: (Thinking his son is WAY too calm) Nice. Mathew: (Recognizing his Dad is about to blow a gasket) Let's go get a better look at it. Randy: (Finally! This kid's calm demeanor is killing me) Let's go! Gotta love this father and son exchange.

I am always baffled when people react negatively whether the hunter decides to shoot an animal they think is to small ,or passes one they think is a trophy. The hunter is the one who has put all the money ,time ,and effort into the hunt ,at what point does your opinion matter even a little bit. Just watch it and enjoy the hunt ,keep your negativity to yourself. Thanks for all the great content Randy!

Appreciate your perspective. As for negative comments, I accept it as part of what we do. It is unfortunate, but such is life. Some folks just operate that way. It has taken a long time and a lot of personal and financial sacrifice for us to live this dream we have. It is at times still a job with a ton of work. It comes with days when you have to put on your thick skin and tune out the critics who feel compelled to prove to the world what experts they are. All in all, we are blessed and we enjoy every day out doing what we do. I wouldn't trade the days hunting with Matthew for all the money in the world.

Matthew is a good hunter. The negative comments are ridiculous. His patience paid off. Sometimes though like Randy said if we are too patient we can pass up good opportunities, however wit 84 bulls in that area, Matthew knew there would be good opportunities the following day. I’ve watched all of the videos Matthew has been involved in and I am a big fan of the show. Matthew has a more somber personality and may even be a little camera shy. That’s OK. It’s refrashing. Off 90% of those that watch these videos got behind a camera, they may feel some trepidation also. Matthew also makes good shots and clean shots. That was an absolutely fantastic bull and huge body. I wish one day I’ll get the same opportunity as a bull that big. Here in SE Idaho, the elk don’t have that same age class and rarely do I see elk that big in my unit. In fact I haven’t seen elk that big in my unit since the 90’s. Look forward to all of your videos. Your the best out there in my opinion as your videos actually tell a story of the ups and downs and all the different variables of elk hunting. Fantastic content.

Thousands of them were built in my my area in NW Iowa; my brothers had a direct hand in building them; we're painfully aware of their worthlessness. They serve only to make us feel better about ourselves.

Mr Newberg sen., First, Congratulations to a marvellous hunt. While caping the bull, you were not holding the knife blade "parallel" to the hide. And that is exactly what you recommended in this Gerber advertising video (also called "field dressing elk gutless method"). Having done that work on some moose, maral, red stag, I smiled a bit when I heard this tip of yours, as it is often quite impossible to follow. After many years of hunting, I believe it's all about practice. Thus I take every opportunity to practice my field dressing/butchering skills. This is how I avoid cutting through hide.

Every moment is special, precious and not to be taken lightly. Especially when weighed against the vast of time. We're only here for a blink then gone. The two days I just viewed were an undeniable father and son hunt. I wish, wish and wish some more that I could have shared that kind of experience with my father. Congratulations Matthew for the incredible animal you harvested! Randy, the patience you presented to a young man who, did get spoiled on the first day was, very fatherly. I love and look forward to watching your videos everyday. Keep up the great work!

Great video thank you and congrats to Matthew holy smokes! Randy you're a huge proponent of trekking poles and when you need them both the most, for the pack out, you ditch one to stabilize the rack? Couldn't you just find/saw a stick for this so you have both polls avail for the pack-out, esp. with your sore knee? Where am I going wrong?
@Fresh_Tracks

I normally use a stick, but there wasn't a stick to be found in this barren badlands country. So, I had to improvise and make it work.

Randy now needs to have Matthew field dress the elk he shot. My dad had me do it when I was 11 - 12 years old. It was interesting and is one moment in life I will always remember; driving to the place we would hunt, tracking and glassing, selecting what you want, shooting it, field dressing it, and cooking & eating it.

He's done his share. One stipulation to being a guest on our platforms is that Randy gets to do the field processing. It is my favorite part of the hunt and if you watch our content you will see I am always the guy doing it. Just part of the deal around here. Thanks for watching.

First off. Congratulations Mathew. Nice bull!! That Bull has some really neat character. What a beaut! Second, I have never rifle hunted for L before. I am seriously considering doing this. I really cannot get enough elk hunting. What are your guises thoughts about bringing Kolt along and doing some soft cow mews to get the bull to stand up or to stop walking.?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 5 жыл бұрын
I should have had a cow call ready when the bull stood up, but I was not prepared. Odds are, if I had made a soft cow call he would have stopped, then turned and looked at us.

Watching this a second time now. When I was there a week before you guys, I kept thinking to myself those badlands probably have some elk, but we never explored it. I was happy with any bull, so I'm glad YOU got him. I hunted cow elk in the adjacent unit in that whiteout. To say it was brutal is an understatement. It was one of those storms where a guy could get lost and die 20 yards from the truck. It's a good thing you left before it came through.
