My least favorite types of music. The kind that’s deceptively easy to sight read but will make you look bad because you mess up on dynamics.

@kylesherman2793

John is a fantastic player and colleague- he chose to use a different articulation pattern and tempo than I did. If either of us had realized we had the same etude, we’d probably have talked about a strategy here, but I think we just both had a lot going on around these recording dates and I know for my part, I learned what he was doing for the first time when I saw it on KZbin! I decided to use a double tongue pattern to achieve the 6/8 feel I wanted, because otherwise you end up with a duple feel. The tradeoff there for me was tempo- I wasn’t willing to spend the hours I might have needed to do that at top tempo. John’s approach utilizes a triple tongue technique, which can work better if you want to achieve the top tempo, but at the expense of the feeling of 6/8. You feel like you’ve got 4 beats to the bar instead of of 6, or two sets of 3. While it might have been good if John and I had got on the same page here, I think it’s cool that you have two takes to choose from. John sounds great, and I think there’s a lot to learn from his approach. I think both of our vids show how you can go after this etude. I saw Johns and thought, “ok I should have done top tempo, now I look like a dumb”
@Clarinet69
@Clarinet69 5 жыл бұрын
@@kylesherman2793 thanks for this comment! Y'alls videos are very helpful for students auditioning for all state. I mean my comments to be interpreted as harmless fun. Obviously you and John both sound amazing. That being said, I think your approach is better for speed and evenness in tempo and sound.

You can be smooth and graceful while triple tonguing. Also it would help if this guy played with even timing instead swinging the figures so much.
@gabrielbustos2706
@gabrielbustos2706 4 жыл бұрын
Mariachi Entertainment System what do you mean by “swinging” the figures? If you mean the slight unevenness whenever he leans on the accents, I think it helps them speak clearly and sets them apart from the rest of the technique; it also makes for a more interesting musical statement than just playing it metronomically, like an arban study. And the reason he suggests double tonguing is because that’s how you differentiate between the regular 6/8 phrase and the hemiola, where it turns into 4 groups of triplets.

This music seems easy to an all state French horn player. We move our hands much more, and our mouthpieces are smaller, making it harder for us to have good range, so of course they put 4 octaves in a piece for us. Its also harder to stay in tune. One more thing, we don't get the luxury of a tutorial made simple as this. We do however have the luxury of a good iq. This is something I could find out how to play myself. Without sheet music. Just the audio..
