Is there much of a diff between the ones that fit in the groove and these kinds that fit on the outside?

A bit cheaper. And they weather just a bit different like they may slowly frail a bit more and when washing your vehicle, power washing the windows weaken the adhesive and car washes can be aggressive and break them off especially around the air drying. Pressure can blow them off
