I have done my own oil changes since I was 18 years old ( 63 now ). In the last few years I have watched many videos on oil changes and I had a friend 25 years ago who worked in his brother's auto repair shop and watched or helped him do many more oil changes. I have never seen anyone remove the oil filter first. Oh well it worked. My last oil change was on my 2017 Toyota Highlander which has the Toyota / Lexus plastic canister oil filter housing and on that one because they are so often overtightened and become seized on, they will sometimes break meaning it needs to be replaced. Even Toyota Techs ( mechanics ) have overtightened them and Quick Lube shops are famous for doing that. In this case, I tried to loosen the plastic oil filter housing first as Toyota had done the first 5 oil changes for "Free". Once the filter housing turned a quarter turn I loosened the filter housing drain plug to drain the filter housing''s oil. That's why I appreciate you using a torque wrench. As for adding the oil, if it calls for 4.5 liters I put in just over 4.2 liters, then start the engine for a couple minutes to drive the vehicle off the ramps to level it after checking for oil leaks. I let the oil settle for 2 minutes and check the dipstick and add oil if necessary to bring the oil level to just below the maximum oil level as oil expands slightly when it heats up. Too much oil can be as bad as too little oil. Check your oil level again the next day and then at every gas fill up for the next few weeks.

Thank you for the inputs Alex. Thats the exact same reason why it becomes my habit of removing the oil filter housing first due to this plastic housing like on 4runners' and Highlanders.

Put a Moto valve in the crankcase and stop dealing with removing the plug, making a mess, and replacing the gasket. That is not a 3/4 inch drive socket. It is a 1/2 inch.

It's a 3/4 inch socket wrench. 😁 And im love doing the old school way. 😎

The socket is 19mm or 3/4" your wrench is 1/2" drive. If you ever install a Fumoto valve, you will never go back to wrenching and having to replace and over priced gasket. I have Fumoto valves on all my vehicles and they are slick. Amazon Fumoto F-133: STANDARD VALVE WITH 12MM-1.25 THREADS WITH LEVER CLIP Gold@@keeprightatdfork

Why do you pull out the dipstick when filling?

Just to have a sense that its gonna drain more well down the oil drain hole though its not 😎

What's the point of over tight the oils filter? And the oils drain plug
@keeprightatdfork3 ай бұрын
Complications that you want to avoid if over tightening your oil drain plug and oil filter are first #1 oil leak. Loose screw thread, difficult removal of canister type oil filter

Clean oil never hurt a Engine! Do you recommend 5K intervals?
@keeprightatdfork Жыл бұрын
It depends how you drive. As per toyota manual, if certain driving condition meets how you drive your vehicle you need to change every 5k mileage interval.
